NC governor recommends suspending democracy to focus on jobs
dailycaller.com...

As a way to solve the national debt crisis, North Carolina Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue recommends suspending congressional elections for the next couple of years.

“I think we ought to suspend, perhaps, elections for Congress for two years and just tell them we won’t hold it against them, whatever decisions they make, to just let them help this country recover,” Perdue said at a rotary club event in Cary, North Carolina, according to the Raleigh News & Observer. “I really hope that someone can agree with me on that.”

Perdue said she thinks that temporarily halting elections would allow members of Congress to focus on the economy. “You have to have more ability from Congress, I think, to work together and to get over the partisan bickering and focus on fixing things,” Perdue said.

North Carolina Republicans immediately scoffed at Perdue’s proposal, pointing out to her that elections hold politicians accountable for their actions.

Wow, really?

Is this in fear of loosing a lot of seats in the next election cycle?

Or just more fear porn?

Economic News Release
Employment Situation Summary
www.bls.gov...

Nonfarm payroll employment was unchanged (0) in August, and the unemployment
rate held at 9.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
Employment in most major industries changed little over the month. Health
care continued to add jobs, and a decline in information employment reflected
a strike. Government employment continued to trend down, despite the return
of workers from a partial government shutdown in Minnesota.

Household Survey Data

The number of unemployed persons, at 14.0 million, was essentially unchanged
in August, and the unemployment rate held at 9.1 percent. The rate has shown
little change since April. (See table A-1.)

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates for adult men (8.9
percent), adult women (8.0 percent), teenagers (25.4 percent), whites
(8.0 percent), blacks (16.7 percent), and Hispanics (11.3 percent) showed
little or no change in August. The jobless rate for Asians was 7.1 percent,
not seasonally adjusted. (See tables A-1, A-2, and A-3.)

The number of long-term unemployed (those jobless for 27 weeks and over) was
about unchanged at 6.0 million in August and accounted for 42.9 percent of the
unemployed. (See table A-12.)

The labor force rose to 153.6 million in August. Both the civilian labor force
participation rate, at 64.0 percent, and the employment-population ratio, at
58.2 percent, were little changed. (See table A-1.)

The number of persons employed part time for economic reasons (sometimes
referred to as involuntary part-time workers) rose from 8.4 million to 8.8
million in August. These individuals were working part time because their
hours had been cut back or because they were unable to find a full-time job.
(See table A-8.)

It's not really democracy...he's for suspending our right to elect representatives.
We've never had democracy.

It's still ridiculous that he would even suggest that. "Let's give more power to a congress that has a 14% approval rating."

I have heard this before and do not see any common sense supporting it. Regardless of how long the term of office is, too much of it will be spent running for the office no matter how you slice it.

I would recommend a 90 day election window. No debates, no commercials, no bus tours, etc until 90 days from the election. The bottom line is if you cannot explain to me in 90 days why you should hold office, 100, 500, or 1000 days will not make a difference.

I understand there is a lot of money to be made off the candidates by the MSM so this will not get any discussion. It would interrupt their bottom line. Heaven forbid their profit margin play second fiddle to elected officials doing what they got elected to do.

You know that does sound like a good amount of time. A bit arbitrary but intuitively a-o-k.

Americans, unfortunately, tend to have a short memory span so a shorter election period could really help people identify ALL candidates.

Good idea

I think the most pertinent line in the quoted text is:

"You have to have more ability from Congress".

Just leave it at that. NOT in suspending elections, but in getting their act together and getting the job done in the time they have allotted.

I am just flabbergasted that they are off on another vacation this week, when they just got back from a month off in August. No wonder so many people want to get elected....what other job gives you lifetime retirement pay after 2 years of work, with life-long (superior) health benefits, let's you take off at least 3 months of the year, you don't really have to work too hard during the other 9 months, and you get to vote yourself a raise every year, to boot!

That's what I call 'living large'!

Looks like you are on to something:

Too Much of a Good Thing
Why we need less democracy.

By Peter Orszag - Former Obama Budget Director

www.tnr.com...,0&passthru=MGU3YjMxNDdlN2UyMjM2MTNhZGZjNDE2MjE2NjE2Nj

In an 1814 letter to John Taylor, John Adams wrote that “there never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” That may read today like an overstatement, but it is certainly true that our democracy finds itself facing a deep challenge: During my recent stint in the Obama administration as director of the Office of Management and Budget, it was clear to me that the country’s political polarization was growing worse—harming Washington’s ability to do the basic, necessary work of governing. If you need confirmation of this, look no further than the recent debt-limit debacle, which clearly showed that we are becoming two nations governed by a single Congress—and that paralyzing gridlock is the result.

So what to do? To solve the serious problems facing our country, we need to minimize the harm from legislative inertia by relying more on automatic policies and depoliticized commissions for certain policy decisions. In other words, radical as it sounds, we need to counter the gridlock of our political institutions by making them a bit less democratic.

Perhaps instead of giving congress a free ticket to do whatever the hell they want it would be more beneficial to cap ALL of congress to a single term limit so they can quit worrying their pretty little heads about re-election and actually do their freaking jobs for a change. Or baring that make Congress function like any other job where time off must be accrued that way we don't have single term green senators and representatives having a whole month off. Oh wait those sounds too much like how the rest of the country has to live so we all know congress won't be down with living like the rest of us.

I think ALL politicians running for office should NOT BE LAWYERS.

I also think all electied officials should write (in their OWN words), a paper on what they intend to do.

Then be held 100% accountable. Every mistake carries a penalty.

Oversight committees (voluntary) need to keep the business lobys out.

Let businesses run themsleves and suffer the consequences when they fail by public demand.

The problem is, all governments are simply consolidation points for high profit corporations.

Those corporations exploit all resources and funnel the money away from the original sources.

Just look at Libya and how much has been sent away over the years, away from the citizens.

Heres an idea.. Instead of suspending elections why dont we pass a law that limits the amount of time a candidate / incumbent can campaign? 2 weeks - 1 month just before the election. Any other campaigning would be prohibited and any member of the Federal Government who is elected, who misses a certain nuber of votes / obligations, is automatically done.

If any members on here are from N. Carolina could you please provide Gov. Perdue a copy of the Constitution, in addition to the definition of what a coup is. Follow that up with treason and send her my regards.

She looked at the recent polling data and is simply dreading the Republicans taking over
the House, Senate and the White House in November 2012.

Solution: Call off the election.

She was not joking.

I agree.

The deep thinking always gets exposed.

She had an episode of hoof in mouth with a side reaction of fear of losing all her own wealth and power.

She must be a legend in her own mind !!

My fear would be that she was actually spilling the beans and exposing the real plan!

Maybe they want martial law in order to actually do this !!!

We need to get her medical records and see if she is taking special medications

Hoof in mouth i agree with....

Part of a conspiracy - I dont think so.

The American people wont allow things to go that far, and neither would law enforcement or the military. The suggestion that every single person at the federal state and local levels of government, all military and police would go along with such an absurd and consitutionally illegal action is extremely short sighted to say the least.

The more politicians that have hoof in mouth disease, the clearer the choice ofr the people when elections come around.

The only way a "coup" is going to succeed is for the people to completely and totally quit caring. We are apathetic about voting, but not to that extent. Her comments should be a wake up call for people to get invovled.

I agree that the citizens may not allow it as of yet.

But these nutty politicians and wild hare extremists might actually think they can get away with it !
(in their OWN heads that is)

There may be some obscure laws that would allow suspensions in cases of certain "emergencies"...

I would be scared of WHO gets to make the decision !!!!!

Florida has something?

What is the Federal law on emergencies and elections ?

I think they can suspend the Constitution also ?

don't know if this genuine.....BUT

A Presidential Executive Order, whether Constitutional or not, becomes law simply by its publication in the Federal Registry. Congress is by-passed. Here are just a few Executive Orders that would suspend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. These Executive Orders have been on record for nearly 30 years and could be enacted by the stroke of a Presidential pen:

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10990 allows the government to take over all modes of transportation and control of highways and seaports.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10995 allows the government to seize and control the communication media.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10997 allows the government to take over all electrical power, gas, petroleum, fuels and minerals.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 10998 allows the government to take over all food resources and farms.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11000 allows the government to mobilize civilians into work brigades under government supervision.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11001 allows the government to take over all health, education and welfare functions.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11002 designates the Postmaster General to operate a national registration of all persons.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11003 allows the government to take over all airports and aircraft, including commercial aircraft.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11004 allows the Housing and Finance Authority to relocate communities, build new housing with public funds, designate areas to be abandoned, and establish new locations for populations.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11005 allows the government to take over railroads, inland waterways and public storage facilities.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11051 specifies the responsibility of the Office of Emergency Planning and gives authorization to put all Executive Orders into effect in times of increased international tensions and economic or financial crisis.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11310 grants authority to the Department of Justice to enforce the plans set out in Executive Orders, to institute industrial support, to establish judicial and legislative liaison, to control all aliens, to operate penal and correctional institutions, and to advise and assist the President.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11049 assigns emergency preparedness function to federal departments and agencies, consolidating 21 operative Executive Orders issued over a fifteen year period.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 11921 allows the Federal Emergency Preparedness Agency to develop plans to establish control over the mechanisms of production and distribution, of energy sources, wages, salaries, credit and the flow of money in U.S. financial institution in any undefined national emergency. It also provides that when a state of emergency is declared by the President, Congress cannot review the action for six months.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 12148 created the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that is to interface with the Department of Defense for civil defense planning and funding. An "emergency czar" was appointed. FEMA has only spent about 6 percent of its budget on national emergencies, the bulk of their funding has been used for the construction of secret underground facilities to assure continuity of government in case of a major emergency, foreign or domestic.

EXECUTIVE ORDER 12656 appointed the National Security Council as the principal body that should consider emergency powers. This allows the government to increase domestic intelligence and surveillance of U.S. citizens and would restrict the freedom of movement within the United States and granted the government the right to isolate large groups of civilians. The National Guard could be federalized to seal all borders and take control of U.S. air space and all ports of entry. Many of the figures in the Iran-Contra scandal were part of this emergency contingent, including Marine Colonel Oliver North.

Thats one issue people seize on (The Federal Government) yet they ignore the major flaw in that view - The States are a seperate entity from the Federal Government.

On the few occasions where Constitutional rights have been suspended, it was closely checked by all 3 branches of government as well as the people. Even today we see the Supreme Court ruling against government action where he governments position was "national security".

The only way the Federal Government can give orders to State guard units is if the Govenor signs an order agreeing to it, or the Federal Government declares a state / city in rebellion or in cases where Federal Law was not being enforced (Civil Rights movement back in the day).

Dont get me wrong, I do understand where people can come to the marshal law conclusion, however they tend to ignore the larger picture.

When the disaster occured in Joplin, the City imposed a curfew and several other restrictions. Those restrictions only applied in the affected zones. Outside of those zones it was business as normal for everyone.

The actions of law enforcement during hurrican katrina in New Orleans is another good example. That department had their asses handed to them time and again in courts for confiscating weapons among other things. The Govenor refused to allow federal control over State guard units.

The Military would be obligated to ignore any order that violates the constitution to the extent of martial law. The chances of all of the stars, planets, galaxies, HAARP and Comet Elenin aligning to allow for a martial law / coup style setup is extremely remote, if not impossible.

As I have stated, the sheer number of people who would be needed to go along with a plan like that is enormous to say the least, and the number of people willing to go along with it wont come close to whats needed for control.

People need to get involved in politics. Hold your elected representatives accountible, fire them when htey dont perform etc etc etc.

If a coup / martial law ever occurs in this country, it wont be because of the military / police / etc etc etc. It will be because the people, citizens, allowed it to occur by doing / saying nothing.

Even faced with insurmountable odds, all it takes is one person to stand their ground and not compromise their beliefs. To me it looks like people who call it out as a conspiracy want it to occur. As they say, a lie travels around the world before the truth even puts its pants on.

If Paul Krugman succeeds at tricking Japan into bombing Pearl Harber again then
i could see Obama getting re-elected. Other than that, he may just hand it over
to Hillary Clinton in January 2012.
