This has just been reported that these monks have set themselves aflame in a show of protest against the Chinese government saying that they will choose the next Dalai Lama. It has always been my understanding that the previous dalai lama would appoint the next one.
news.yahoo.com...

I admit I didnt know a lot about Buddhism but I at least tried to educate myself on it a little and found this:
en.wikipedia.org...

I consider myself a spiritual person, and I believe in Christ. I don't judge others for what they believe and I do realize this could have some serious implications if the Chinese government does indeed pick the next Dalai Lama
(government controlled religion is never a good thing),

There was a farm with a llama named "Dalai". I have a feeling it wasn't the reincarnation of anything though. Letting China pick a new spiritual leader, is kind of like the western Government saying the llama from the farm is Jesus Christ.

It does not matter who picks the Dalai Lama. Once the Dalai Lama is chosen that indiviual will be the Dalai Lama. Chew on that for a minute.

Here it is in the LA Times.

well thats dumb.

that would be like a couple catholic nuns setting themselves on fire because the united states govt told everyone it was going to choose the next pope.

why would you take such ridiculous crap seriously enough to want to kill yourself over it?
let china have their counterfeit lama. if any fools choose to follow him or listen to his advice that is their fate, obviously they werent taking the whole "religion" thing very seriously.

honestly, this is just retarded on all fronts.
you dont fight this level of stupid by taking it seriously, you fight it by treating it exactly as it is... a complete joke. you laugh at it and ignore it, until the govt realizes they are wasting their time and give up.

but that seems to be a common character trait in asian cultures.. they take EVERYTHING WAY TOO SERIOUSLY.

Its hard for me to explain this to you, but when you believe in a cause that is so great, greater than yourself, you will take extreme measures. This is the most extreme way a Buddhist monk can protest because they don't believe in violence. In a Christian culture this would be considered suicide but in fact its closer to the point that Jesus sacrificed himself. Same concept, except this is modern sacrifice of the same level and not suicide.

I agree that its a legitimate news story. I just wasn't sure where to put it, because it has both political and spiritual implications.

The successor is chosen not really chosen by the previous DL. There is generally some sort of search conducted that takes into account "signs" pointing to who the next reincarnation is. There are 4 sacred lakes in Tibet that come into play as well as reading the relics left in the ashes of the remains of the previous DL amongst other considerations such as the Panchen Lama's choice (this is generally the most public declaration of the reincarnation of the DL)
"The Panchen Lama bears part of the responsibility or the monk-regent for finding the incarnation of the Dalai Lama[13] and vice versa"

SOURCE:en.wikipedia.org... Sorry for using wikapedia, but the information is correct

doesnt buddhist preach nonviolence?

its suicide anyhow you take it, setting yourself afire and making a violent statement.

why couldnt they wing it out and sit starving to death in peaceful protest like hindu gandhi?

Sorry but that is a truly ignorant statement.

It's a protest. I wonder what type of reaction western countries would get if people protested with such heart. I'm sure the outcry would deafen ears the world round.

To be honest, I don't think they would really care at all...

Also I guess they did not want to starve themselves, they wanted to set themselves a fire.
Why would it be better to starve yourself as a protest or light yourself on fire, as the end result is the same.

If priests here in America ran out in the streets and slit their wrists in protest of our government outlawing religion, it would be a big deal. Do you think Christians would see it as suicide or holy sacrifice?

So many ignorant replies to this post, do people not have principles any more? Can people not understand what is going on? Do people only think of themselves, and not the greater good? Can people not see the destruction of a religion and culture by an immoral government? Does anyone care?

Well, obviously, these priests do.

The ignorance display above and elsewhere in this thread is frightening...and I'm not a Budhhist or anyway religious.

Do you think the Chinese government can circumvent fate? I think you misinterpreted my message.

It is indeed alarming. Here you have a peaceful religion that focuses on peace and transcendence and is facing utter abolishment. I have a feeling that this too, will get swept under the rug and people will forget about it as well. I have some real issues with this, even though I don't have the same religious views. First of all, it seems that a lot of people have no problem with the threat of the globalization of radical Islam (yes, I realize I will take some hits for that one) which is more of a threat to humanity than buddhism or even christianity ( yes, I realize that many despicable things have been done in the name of christianity, but it is NOT what Jesus preached. Also, it seems as if this would be a precursor to a New World Order and a one world religious system. Think about - by taking out the more peaceful religions and doing away with them, it would make it much easier for an antichrist type figure to move in and set up his reign. Ok, Im getting off topic, so I will get back to the subject
We have the freedom of religion, and separation of church and state (I don't want anyone telling me how to worship, and likewise I won't tell anyone else how to worship) I suppose this can all be summed up by a particular old quote by martin Niemoller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out --
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.

The Dalai Lama is not chosen, he is more discovered by Tibetan Buddhist masters who know how to tell if it's him or not. How is the Chinese government in any position to choose the next Dalai Lama? They are against religion in the first place. China has no control over this religious matter. It's as ridiculous as if you had a headline stating that the UN would be deciding which planet alien life will be from.

edit: and I'm currently looking through a book to try to explain why monks like this Immolate, that's great that nobody on a site like this even has the slightest intuitions that there might be a valid philosophy behind it from a culture that's 3000 years old and full of wisdom. Much less someone that could just tell us what it's all about..

I would have to agree with you. In addition to the ignorant statements being made the thread is being derailed. I think OP is trying to get a serious story out to people that is of interest to members here on ATS.

OP, awesome thread and thank you for sharing this information
