A bomb has ripped through a food market in Thailand's troubled Muslim south, killing one person and injuring at least 30 on the eve of a visit by the Prime Minister, officials said.

Police and soldiers were among those hurt in the blast in the Sukhirin district of Narathiwat province, bordering Malaysia.

It was the deadliest since a pair of bombs killed two policemen in the region in January, in the early stages of an upsurge in separatist violence that has plagued the kingdom for decades.

Police believe the device was detonated by mobile phone. This is the deadliest attack in Thailand since a blast in January of this year when two police officers were killed.
