If you could create a list of 10 Commandments designed to better Humanity, what would you include? The idea is to include regulations that you feel would positively benefit modern society - not what you believe some higher power would want you to adhere to. The list can be as creative as you like, but please try to keep each one as concise as possible.

Here is my list:

1) Strive for Peace and Harmony in all aspects of your life
2) Show love and tolerance to those around you
3) Respect Nature and take care of the Earth
4) Accept that others will have different opinions to your own
5) Ensure all wealth and resources are distributed fairly
6) Do not kill other people or animals (unless in self-defense)
7) Do not commit evil unto others (such as lie, cheat or steal from them)
8) Do not start wars or encourage division amongst populations
9) Do not permit corruption in Government, Law or Police enforcement
10) Do not aid or support those who would do evil unto others.

I have probably overlooked a few things, but hopefully this gets the ball rolling.

I couldn't have said it any better! I love the way you went from the positive actions of humanity to the "Do not" be an &^%!

Star and flag!

(PS: I would love it if you would double post this in my thread below.....)

I'd we stopped killing animals the human race would last weeks at best. The amount of food required to sustain a population of 7 billion vegans simply wouldn't be possible to produce.

I'm assuming you mean the killing of animals for no apparent reason. As a hunter gatherer race we simply need meat to survive to provide our main source of protein and iron. Without this most of us would become anemic.

What would you propose as the means to deal with those who refuse to abide by these commandments?

I'm guessing that would require "bending" them a bit, eh?

My ultimate commandment: Leave me alone and I'll do the same for you.

Disregard this commandment and it's game on.

My intention was not for this to be a list that has to be enforced strictly by a governing body. More, I was hoping it could be used as a guide for better living.

We could all use a guide for better living.

This is probably what the pioneers of religion were thinking. Or at least the rules for better living. They used fear of god to enforce it. This is during a time when humans were largely uneducated and living in deplorable conditions. A few smart people devised a way to make the populace follow basic rules. Now with the decline and corruption of religion we need a new way to teach these things. The schools certainly don't do it. I have made it a point to raise my children with good morals and have a strong mind and the ability to question and draw their own conclusions. Their respect for their environment and other people is the envy of most of their friends parents. I am always asked how I achieved such polite and well mannered kids without removing their individuality and creativity. Because most parents inadvertently destroy these traits while attempting tovmake model citizens out of their kids.

1.Legalize all drugs, treat addicts as medical problems not criminal. Take the crime element out of it.
2. 3 Day working week for everyone, everyone works unless disabled/sick
3. The rich pay more tax, the more you have the more you pay.
4. Feed the world, no more starving children.
5. Clean up the planet
6. Stop all profit from oil and release the patents for free energy
7. You have the right to do anything you like as long as it doesnt interfere with someone else doing what they want.
8. Strive for fairness and equality for everyone, look after your fellow man.
9. Sack all the bankers and introduce a fair world monetary system.
10. Freedom and tolerance of all religion.

Heres my top 10 in no particular order may i add.

Worldwide, I can only think of one -
1. Never physically attack another nation for any reason, whatsoever.

On a local level, I'd like to live in a community with these commandments:
1. Never physically attack another person for any reason, whatsoever.

2. Prison would be used only for violent (and/or sexual) offenses. All others crimes would be punished with community service and fines (always both, never one without the other).

3. Every law would be decided upon by direct democratic vote.

4. No substance would be illegal. If you commit a crime under the influence of a substance, part of the punishment would include educational courses as they currently do with alcohol related crimes.

5. No healthcare charges, period. If we can afford to police the world with state-of-the-art expenses, we can afford to take care of our basic human needs.

6. No tuition costs. Educating our citizens is in our own best interests. Charging people to contribute to society is a completely backwards concept.

7. Homelessness and starvation will not be tolerated. Ever.

8. Marriage should be replaced by "domestic partnership" and can be filed by groups of up to six people and of any orientation. Incest and statutory laws would still apply. Marriage could still take places in churches just like always but that tradition would be independent from the legal definition.

9. Gaining citizenship would only require taking an oath to uphold these commandments and a promise to take some mandatory courses.

10. Every citizen would be required to enlist in government service for one year after high school graduation. (protecting the border, building shelters, growing food, etc)

I'll stick with the original.

5) Ensure all wealth and resources are distributed fairly

Get rid of that. It is not my job or anyone else's job to support laziness.
You are free to give what you want at your own discretion to whomever or whatever cause you see fit.
I see no need for anyone/government, to take away what they have not earned.
