A satellite is in freefall. Zero G. Or close enough to it.

It's moving to the west with each orbit. The last pass was off the East Coast. This one was up through the middle of the States.

It's moving FROM the west, right? Please don't mess with my head. Yes, off the east coast heading towards Asia. Last time I noticed, I have to go east to get there (from Florida)

One line? Which one. The one that goes Latitude or....hmmm this will be difficult. Ah hell, I give up....or the other way?

Skies are mostly clear hear in SE Michigan. I hope they stay that way. I would like to see this thing if it does fly overhead during re entry.

The satellite is moving in a generally easterly direction (NE, SE...it's all easterly-ish), but each successive orbit shifts to the west (because, as Phage pointed out, the Earth is rotating to the east "below" it).

Got it!

Man, I thought you were about to change the world I once knew. Good. So everything is copacetic and moving: west to east but....speeding up. In general. Not UARS however. That's slowing down. We're speeding up (this is EXACTLY why I used to take drugs 25 years ago!
)

It goes around the world in 89 minutes, right Phage? CL? Help me here. Don't want to start false rumors.

So, if it is traveling 8000 miles in 89 minutes .....how fast is it going?

82 minutes now, apparently. It's travelling at 7.81 km/s (4.85 mi/s). At that speed, I could get to the nearest mall in under 10 seconds. In fact, I could get to Shag Harbour in about half a minute.

Km = Kilometers, right? What's the /s mean?

Ya know what?....to hell with all that, what's this equal to in miles?

Didn't this planet once agree for everyone to use the metric system? It's bad enough there of thousands of different languages but there's no reason why we're not all on the same math-page! Math should be Universal. Just like music!

What's in the brackets is for people of your kind... 4.85 miles per second.

Yes, 9 hours ago.
A satellite in orbit is in freefall. That's why astronauts, and everything else in it, are weightless.
