In one case, the son of a beneficiary continued receiving payments for 37 years after his father's death in 1971. The payments - totaling more than $515,000 - were only discovered when the son died in 2008.

Office of Personnel Management spokesman Edmund Byrnes said he could not immediately comment on the findings. But the report said OPM Director John Berry agrees that stopping the improper payments should be a priority.

How hard is it to see a government check arrive at the jail?

These kinds of things make me wonder if we are even capable of fixing this mess.

Being dead pays better than a lot of other sectors from this information. On another note. I always suspected the government was full of zombie workers. Now I am certain of it.

I'm curious how they lost any money here if it was paid to people in prison or dead, because it would seem like a difficulty for people in prison to cash or deposit checks, and even more difficult for dead people to do so..

I saw the one who's son collected the payments, but that doesn't account for the rest..

Maybe what they mean is that the payee's family members were endorsing the checks and getting the money that way? I didn't see that in the story, but reporting has been decimated for a long while with 3rd grade educated reporters, so it isn't surprising either way..

100% totally inexcusable seriously never mind the fact that
a. their dead
b. those prisoners are already getting a tax paid vacation

lets waste that cash.

Seriously, this HAS to be a perfect example of why government should not be in charge of post offices, rail roads, healthcare, car companies, or airlines.
