It is a bit disgusting that during a period when millions of people are out of work, losing their homes and losing hope that the President would allow his wife to wear $42K of diamond bracelets at a function where she was certain to be photographed. A bit more modesty would have been appropriate if the function was to be photographed at all and it does not matter that they were on loan - its the statement that counts.

By his actions, by his tone and by his actual language, this gent believes he and his wife are far closer to King and Queen than President and First Lady.

"That was no ordinary bling on the wrist of First Lady Michelle Obama at the DNC fundraiser in New York Tuesday night."

"If you've been saving your nickels and dimes, the cuffs are available locally at Judith Ann Jewels. The First Lady wore Katie's Lotus cuff priced at $15,000 with 2.9 carats of diamonds, her Gothic cuff at $15,350 with 2.17 carats in diamonds and the Quatrefoil bracelet at $11,800 with 1.73 carats in diamonds."

And you get the concept of classless, right? This sends the wrong message. This is not Hollywood, the red carpet or anything even close to it. But it speaks volumes about this couple and probably not what they'd like.

Does she own this jewelry?

Do you ever watch award shows? See all the gowns and glam? Those people are wearing clothing and jewelry that don't belong to them. They are wearing them on loan.

Yes, but many people will not stop to think that the jewlery were loaned. All they will think is how many months one piece could pay for their rent. And being the First Lady and all....people will assume.

It only sends a wrong message if you're overly critical and out to make mountains of molehills. It's great advertisement for dress designers and jewlers etc. It has always been done, for Hollywood as well as Politics.

Are you suggesting this wealth of hers would be better spread around to the poor here?
Why do you deny people who have worked hard for what they have...permission to keep it?

And if it is just for appearances do you really think by hiding this bracelet from us Michele Obama would be more sensitive to the poor? Wouldn't eliminating the tax breaks for the rich actually help the poor more than NOT wearing something in public would. Are you championing that?

I think in these tough economic times it is unpatriotic for any of the wealthy to wear any of their jewelry in public. Let's make them quit that.

But also I have to ask,
Is it possible....?

Whether it is a loan or not....she is out of touch. All the expensive vacations, that party a few months back with $100 plates or whatever it was.......they're not celebrities, it's ridiculous. And I don't give a crap what other presidents/first ladies did......this country is in shambles and they act like they are beyonce and whatever her boyfriends name is. Bleh.

I do somewhat agree with your overall message here.

However, I do not think that is his decision. It is/was [color=CAFFC2]her decision.

Well, the answers simple. When have the obama's ever shown any concern for the country period? Look at their last vacation, they had to take two planes because michael couldn't wait a couple hours for her husband and all of them leave on the same plane?

Yes I think in these difficult economic times nothing but a bit of yarn, woven with rope and some beads will do. I think all of you are being too hard on her and more than a little ridiculous. Beyonce? What is this a DQ commercial?

It is tasteless and a failure of leadership (and poor politics to boot). The President and First Lady actually need to demonstrate that they are aware of the conditions in the country and flaunting that kind of bling shows them to be out of touch, which they are.

It is hyprocacy to have him giving speaches during the day and then doing the glitz at night. On Monday he want from a "workers unite" speach where he bemoaned the wealthy straight to a $38K lunch in NYC. I get the fund raising, its part of the deal and the part of the deal that he is the best at, but to stick it in the face of people who he is endeavoring to connect with is foolish shows no class.

She could have and should have dressed modestly to the event. Dressing modestly would have been seen as a positive, sensitive jesture, but no - she has to dress like she's walking down the red carpet. Just another shallow, self important display. One of many.

Oh when have the ruling elite ever been any different.
Even when the peasants were dropping like flies in the mud from famine and plague, someone, somewhere was being an ostentatious arse showing off to other elites.

You are clearly as out of touch with reality as the Obama's.
This is NOT Hollywood! THEY are NOT celebrities! This is NOT an awards show. Get it!?!? No red carpets. No paparazzi. No fashion designers. Entertainment tonight wasn't covering the event. That whiny hag Joan Rivers wasn't on hand interviewing.

As the leader and first lady of the the free world, in an economy that has millions struggling for basic daily sustinence, this sends exactly the WRONG message! The fact that you condone this, that you think of them as celebrities, gives me great pause to wonder how so many have simply abdicated their right, NO their RESPONSIBILITY to vote responsibly. This is why our nation is crumbling... because people like you look as these people as celebrities and not what they are - PUBLIC SERVANTS!!!

Ya' beat me to it newcovenant...my first thought was "Empathy" in the title - the Obama haters like to point out repeatedly that Dems and Obama use empathy (which needs a victim) to further socialist agendas...so you have that - and then the obvious second point is now we are criticizing successful people? How socialist.

Mhm, she is the first lady........ why should she turn down the perks and lifestyle of being the first lady, just because americans happen to be struggling? Being the first lady of the U.S is a very rare opportunity, you know?

It's just an advertising gimmick. Kind of like NASCAR drivers having logos on their jumpsuits only more subtle.

The "perk" of being the First Lady is being in a unique position to serve your country. Its not having a nice spread and being able to throw bashes for celebrities.
