And as far as socialism, how is that socialism? The way I see it, it is a fee levied on the oilcos for doing business in AK. And at the end of the year, there are excess funds in the fee pool.

That's got socialism written all over it, the government forcing the private corporation to share their profit with the citizens of the state. Primarily for using the natural resources that, get this, belong to the citizens of the state!

Consider it a FEE . We all pay FEES aspart of our lives. You need a building permit to put a deck on your house. Etc etc.

And the important part is that it is being done at a STATE LEVEL. You cannot escape 'socialism' at the state and local level. But when I say socialism, I mean at a national level.

The benefits of socialism are all around America and we're blind to them, blind because of the 20th century red scare. Grow up America.

You're confused. Socialism at a national level is a philosophy of stagnation and death.

It's not only ok, it's necessary at the local level for essential services. That's why I hate it when Obama starts saying "pass this bill or we'll have to lay off cops and firefighters."

The feds have nothing to do with our cops and firefighters!

ETA: Oh, and the states can choose to be libertarian or socialist or whatever they want, so your moniker is wrong.

This really isn't news I mean everyone knows that as soon as you are a resident in Alaska you get all kinds of tax breaks and money. Hahaha how else could they keep people in a place that is super cold and everything wants to eat you!

I'm glad to see you've realized the importance of socialism in modern society! I'm sorry to see you don't realize the amount of money the federal government puts towards government employees such cops, firefighters and teachers.

USA Spending is a great site to see where all that money goes. Go ahead, call your city council and find out how much their firefighters and police have received in federal dollars this year.

The states can't stand on their own for a lot of things without federal support. If you honestly believe that everything in your state is provided by your state alone you are very, very mistaken.

The feds put ZERO dollars towards local govt employees. All they do is to extort money from the nation at the point of a gun, take their cut off the top to fund their bloated bureaucracies and graft, and then dole out some of what's left to the states in the form of 'federal aid'. A very inefficient system, and not much different than a mob controlled hierarchy.

I wonder who puts that info out? A federal agency, perhaps?

You've got it backwards. The feds can't stand on their own at all without the money it extracts from the nation. That includes states and corps. The feds cannot create jobs, cannot create wealth. Their power is limited to printing fiat money. All they do is extort, consume, and recycle our money.

Well, my PFD Check as always just goes to paying off my ridiculous debt. The Banks are a pain because you have everyone cashing their check, pulling money out to blow it as fast as they can. Heck the line for two days at AKUSA was outrageously long, people standing outside in lines for hours.

The advertising across the state makes me sick, greedy bastards all after everyones money. Its upsetting just observing the majority of people at Wal-mart, Fred Myers, and other stores spending half or all of their dividends on plain JUNK, nothing thats going to improve their future financially. I saw one lady with her kids and her shopping cart must have had what looked like 100 DVD's at $10-20 each, way too much candy, they're clothes were trashed. I'm wondering why isn't she purchasing better, warmer clothes for herself and children. I'm sick of seeing people getting handouts, free money, grants and ignoring all priorities and responsibilities

And yes, we do deserve it! Trust me when I say that the cost to heat a camper, apartment, or house can be extremely costly when its -20 degrees outside. Many use that PFD Check to pay their gas and electric bills through the winter months, I'm talking about the poor and middle class. Prices are even worse as you get out of our 2 major cities, well not that big
