LINCOLN, N.H. (AP) — Fifty years after Betty and Barney Hill reported seeing a flat, cigar-shaped craft hovering over them in New Hampshire's White Mountains, the state has put up a historical marker noting their close encounter with a UFO.

Of course, the marker is put there as a tourist attraction, but that is O.K. Maybe I can get one in the backwoods of Illinois where I had my experience three years later,

I'll bet most viewers to this thread have no idea that there was a day when reports of abductions had absolutely no credibility anywhere, not with family, friends or even "official" UFO orgs such as MUFON. Eventually, this will be viewed as one of those Ripley's Believe It Or Not! situations.

I'll also bet that most viewers have no idea how the topic of UFOs have progressed over the half century that the phenomena have been witnessed in large numbers. It is all part of moving the myth or legend of "flying saucers" into common knowledge and acceptance.

All part of the program, folks, to decrease the final shock when it comes and it must come, such as it is, in bits and pieces, tantalizing revelations about everything out there, the Moon, Mars, Titan, earth-like planets around distant stars, water in space, etc. In my day, all of that was science fiction, a genre of "literature" that was not recognized except for we weirdo kids that loved the stuff. Believe it or not, it was viewed in those days similarly to how porn is viewed today by the general population. (Maybe that is why I've mostly switched to porn?)

I think it's a good thing that we have old stories like this to fall back on. In this day and age when a comet is a UFO and everyone wants to be known as someone who has seen one simply so they can get more hits on You Tube or a personal blog, these stories remind us that UFO's are indeed real and they have been visiting us for a very long time.

My opinion of course.

Yes, at that point in time you were absolutely positioning yourself for ridicule....but I guess when it turns your life upside down you feel as if you have to do something...
