You wont be running BF3 on max settings with a 6950(2 x 6950's will come close), I've got 4 x 6970's and it takes 2 x 6970's to maintain BF2 over the 60FPS on ALL max settings @ a resolution of 1920x1200(not really much more than 1080p), dont get me wrong a 6950 will be more than suffice to runt he game, but you'll be dropping well below 60FPS at times if you try to max out BF3.

So to be honest you'll be wanting AT LEAST 2 x 6950's(2 x GTX570's or 2 x 6970's would be better) if you want to run BF3 at max settings, of course you'll also need to make sure you have 2 x PCI-E slots on the motherboard you buy if you are planning on going for 2 cards, and youll also want at least a good quality 700W PSU if buying 2 x 6950's(more if you're going for 2 x GTX570's or 2 x 6970's). If you decide that for whatever reason you dont want 2 graphics cards then you'll want to get a GTX580(forget the GTX590) or a 6990(but pretty expensive and two seperate graphics cards would be better).

Thanks for all the help fellas
ive just been looking on youtube and found a few videos of the ATI 5970 and from what i can see it runs crysis on ultra high settings with 1 card and its over 55fps constantly...would you recommend me buying 1 or 2 of them for bf3?

have you priced the 5970 ? OUCH.... the 5900 series cards are really good cards, but their price point also reflect that. Most decent 5970s can be easily replaced by two 6970s for just slightly more.... and offer a better long term solution.... because you wont be taxing one card as hard when the two split the load....

avg 5970 is going for AT LEAST $500 new.

6970 is going for $337

6990 is going for $734
lol

If it were me, I would go with the 6970 if I was buying at this moment... if your budget is low, you can buy one, and add another 6970 later.

These guys are trying to make a profit. It cost less to build those computers then they are charging. Do you all ready have a copy of windows? Thats another $100. You can all ways get a used card. Look at craiglist. I think you should get a 560ti. They are really good cards, it will run bf3 on high settings and latter on if you want more performance they will be allot cheaper like around 150-180 so you can SLI.
You should post what you are buying so far.

You can build a GRATE pc if you use older generation hardware. You can get a GTX 295 for 150 used and that card will out perform a 570 and possibly a 580 but it does not have DX11. It used to be the best card on the market. It has 2 gpu's one card. So the computer will read it as SLI when it only takes up one slot. If you get 2 gtx 295 then you will have quad SLI.

Just to back this guy up, im still using a GTX295 that i bought a week after it was released and ive yet to play a game that it struggled with. However ive gone off FPS shooter games the last one i played was modern warfare 2, so i cant be 100% sure that games like the new BF3 would work on "max everything" settings.

Sharkey Extreme Guide P1
Sharkey Extreme Guide P2

I've always liked Sharkey's buyers guides. There are a few on the site. Entry level, mid level and high end guides.
Good pics on cpu's, mobo's, ram etc.

I'd read of few of their guides to get a feel for what's out there. They have some excellent suggestions.

You cant use a non DX11 card to max out any newer game... think about it for a second.. if you cant turn on DX11 you are lowering the quality....

DX11 introduced a lot of new graphical abilities, it is a necessity for new games especially BF3, and Diablo 3 etc.

If you have the money to get a super powerful power supply then Nvidia is a good choice, but also requires better cooling efficiency... trust me, Overall with a more limited budget, ATI is the way to go....

He does not have the money. Its up to him. Does he want to sacrifice performance for some eye candy? I would rather the game run smoother on highest settigns with out DX11 then run choppy with DX11..

The 480 is a grate card. Reviews are only good to a certain extent. ATI will put out reviews bashing nvidia and Nvidia will put out reviews bashing ATI. The only thing you need to look at is performance. For get what some one else has to say. Go to youtube videos and look at the FPS in a popular graphic demanding game such as GTA4 or crysis. Do not forget to check out craiglist, when the 8800gtx was a $600 card, I got one on used craiglist for $150 and it was only used once for some kind of game expo.
