Help with a math problem

I was wondering if some one could help me with this problem

2(1/2Y)squared+5(1/2Y)-3

I have to use variable substitution to factor.

The first part: 2(1/2Y) is squared.

Ohh NO! I forgot all my math! Put 3y, that's what I used to do for every problem.

Notation:

Do they read "half Y"

or "one over 2Y" ?

Well, it seems to read 1 over 2Y. Man, I really hate this problem.

Damn...lol...it's been a while for me - If my friend hadn't lost my TI-83 I could tell you for sure...

Here's what I got - y=1 - here's how I got it....might want to have someone check my work here....I could be way off

2(1/2y)squared +5(1/2y) - 3
2(1/4y) + 5 (1/2y) - 3
1/2y + 2.5y - 3
3y - 3 (Something tells me you could leave it at this, but you can also set it equal to zero here too I think)
3y - 3 = 0
3y = 3
y = 1

Let 1/2Y = X.. Then you get 2x^2 + 5x - 3. The rest should be self-explanatory.

You screwed up there squaring 1/2y = 1/(4y^2) NOT 1/4y. Nice Try though.
