These Optical Illusions Scare Me

A recently identified visual illusion takes advantage of the unsettling effect of uncertainty in gaze direction. The “ghostly gaze” illusion, created by Rob Jenkins of the University of Glasgow in Scotland, was awarded second prize in the 2008 Best Illusion of the Year Contest, held in Naples, Fla. In this illusion (left and center), twin sisters appear to look at each other when seen from afar. But as you approach them, you realize that the sisters are looking directly at you!

This one creeps me the hell out. The eyes will move from left to right depending on how far away you are from the picture.

I think this one is pretty neat too. The eyes have not changed, but the position of the girls head makes it appear that the picture on the left is looking directly at you, while the one on the right makes it look as if she is looking to her left. I suppose it's rather obvious but I would have missed it without explanation.

I think everyone has seen this picture before. If you're close it looks like Einstein, but the more you move away it begins to look like Marylin Monroe.

Hope you guys found this interesting too! Give the article a once over, they explain how we perceive what direction a person is looking in and what not. Cool read, cool effect.

I love optical illusions and even
designed once, if I can find it
in my 1000's of images I will
post it here. The second one
down and the Marilyn Monroe
are really neat. Thanks for sharing
with us.

Sure thing! Glad you enjoyed them. I would really love to see the one you created. I think optical illusions are fascinating. I still maintain the second picture I posted is creepy though!

LOL I didn't even notice the one on the right was different. Thanks for pointing it out! I'm a little embarrassed now but oh well.

1. They are still looking at me even when I put my computer very far away.
2. Eyes don't move to me. Even from very far away.
3. It's not the same picture. The details in the eyes have changed. Also the ears have changed.
4. Still looks like Einstein to me. Even from very far away.

Weird, changes for me. Does the Einstein on the right change to harry potter for you?

If your cross your eyes just enough on the first illusion to make it look as if three heads were there, the middle one appears 3D. I thought that was cool.

It works quite well.
