You are right, but it's not just our 401Ks, it's everything that is traded or produced or any wealth imagined or real. There are a few on the top of the pyramid who everything else trickles up to. The rest from there on down toil to continue the upward flow. Unfortunately, the vast majority on the bottom who hold up the top must break their backs to keep the machine turning. This has always been this way since we have banded together as a society.

Read 'The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. Things are still the same. Link to the online book:

Read it long ago!

You are a danger to society...you have figured it out.

I left the race last year only after a lot of work to clear any debt we had barr our mortgage. Luckily we bought our house before the prices went silly and I mean very close to it.

Since then I and the wife work to live we don't earn a great deal so there is less money in the house nowadays but all the bills get paid and we both get away with working 1 or 2 days a week.

I am self emloyed so although there are hassles with that it does mean I have a very flexible life. It does also mean though I have an older car, smaller house and less trips away but I love my life now.

People dont need to stop working they need to learn that you should work to live not live to work and buy expensive things that you have no time to enjoy as you need to work to pay for them.

edit to add: leaving work and having no debt barr the mortgage junks your cerdit rating something terrible but I have managed so far to deal with that.

Communism is a form of government aimed at stealing the wealth and resources from its people.
Communal living is a lifestyle dedicated to improving the welfare/condition of all the participants while utilizing the minimum natural resources to achieve it. This is not a form of government or an ism of any kind.

I will continue to fight the advances of communism in America all the days of my life, but, i do support communal living. There is a defined difference.

The individual is often encouraged, enabled and enlightened in such an environment. Talent becomes important rather which skill pays more. Creativity naturally becomes free-flowing. Often, the act of helping another provides the self fulfillment we seek in our 'j-o-b-s', yet seldom find.

Ppl, we have reached a place where sharing food with the homeless is illegal ??? wtf ??

No one is suggesting that you give up luxuries, however, working for mere sustenance is non-productive ... and our own history bears this out.

The scary consideration is ... given the current situation world-wide, humans are more inclined to destroy rather develop, why ?? Plenty of ppl with free time, where is the effort?

My thoughts precisely. Feeding the homeless is banned, and giving food to the less fortunate is a liability. Food safety is of concern anywhere government does not regulate the production of it. And where they monitor the production of it, they ignore the companies that produce it with chemicals that destroy it's genetic material.

I still do not understand why people do not get the difference between socialism and communism.

You have it correct.

Work just enough to make yourself and loved ones happy.

Thank you! That was the best thing I've read on these forums in a longgggggggggggggggggg time.. maybe you should get a job as a writer???

For me, I agree, I think the entire problem is money.. which is pretty funny when you look at it because in REALITY, money is fake. How does ANYONE run up a debt of over 14 trillion dollars? I bet if I went out right now and was somehow able to gather all of the money on the entire planet up, I still wouldn't have 14 trillion dollars. Think about it, it's all credit - it's all just numbers in a computer somewhere.

Some other quick thoughts I've had over the last couple years:

Most of my friends feel that work is simply a way to make money and pay bills. They could less if they enjoy what they're doing all day long, everyday, year after year - as long as they can have enough money to live in a nice house, have a nice car, eat, and have a little bit of fun on the weekends usually doing something like getting completely wasted at the local bar, they're "happy". Is this really what being happy is? Hell if ya throw in a sports-car, a swimming pool, and a nice vacation every now and then, they're pretty much willing to do anything.

I like what you were saying about prisoners too. I think the other part to that idea is how these days, more and more laws are being created and more and more people are being arrested everyday. Why? Because, people need jobs - You gotta hire people to build jails, maintain security, and arrest criminals. But where does this go, at some point they won't have anywhere else to put the prisoners.

Oh, and of course, there's always the "cool factor" / "being successful". I mean, who would want to be a dirty jobless bum? "Man those people really annoy me... I say we just lock all of them up and throw away the key!"

Nice Essay. It's a heat seeking missle to the truth.

I'm a little older now - and I've already checked out of the system.

But for the young kids today who will, inevitably, find themselves in some meaningless, soul-sucking job, here's my advice:

Treat your job with contempt and disdain.

Laugh at the managerial language, decisions and goals of "The Company".

Never give "The Company" any extra time or effort.

And, if you are knocking off a screenplay or a novel, feel free to make use of the company's photocopier.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the OP idea but just can't. No one works? How does anything get done?

Would public robots give my children teeth cleanings and check for cavities or would I have to learn how to? Would my wife be compensated for teaching school all day or just do it for self satisfaction while I get to stay home trying to figure out what I need to build a guitar so that I can teach myself how to play the guitar to give me something to do that's not actually productive?

Like I said, I just don't get it. I could work hard for other peoples benefit if I wanted to - but could also choose to spend all day everyday drinking free beer and eating free cheeseburgers?

Also, you do know that Christopher McCandless died at 24 years old, don't you? Alone for sure and most likely terrified.

I think the alternative solution to that problem is to be your own master,
in that sense , have people pay for things that you create.

I guess I am starting out in this field , I get paid to do graffiti tutorials with teenagers in youth groups and also get paid to do graphic design work for people and small companies !

I enjoy doing graphic design. the world will never have no use for design , everything man made around you at one point was designed by someone and to advertise that it was done by a graphic designer !

I've designed a plan for freeing us, the slaves, that actually starts at the top. This is not in the government's best interest. The government and the elite who employ them enjoy slave ownership. I know that freedom could easily start with government. However, they are the masters and will not relinquish control. Fortunately, control is through propaganda. We just have to ignore the name calling and form our own societies,. Their control would then have to move to intimidation and beyond. At that point, we'll just have to see who has the better army.

You need to make your own job friend. I used to have some luck building Sawmills. They always sold well and I made my own hours etc... A person could buy a mill from ya and start up his own lumber yard so it was an easy sell.

look at the plans from linnlumber it is a good place to start. Just dont kill anyone, or yourself! It is hard but rewarding work.

You will always be slave to your own needs, and the needs of your family etc... You do not have to pull a 40 hour week to make it though bud.

Love your post wish more people would wake up and see what you see. Here are some quotes from others as i feel mine would be to bias.

and this one sums it all up

It is easy to sit up and take notice. What is difficult is getting up and taking action

Work for food and shelter doesn't equal slavery -- as long as you're not FORCED to work and are free to leave, it's not slavery. Now you could argue you're forced to work, otherwise no food and shelter, but that would still be your free choice, so the analogy with slavery is wrong.

I'm mostly with you on what you write, but I think the world would be a better place if we all worked for food and shelter, i.e., form small communities of, say, 50-100 people, like a tribe, and everyone works for the common good. And no, that's not communism, because in communism there's the state overseeing the whole system. I'm talking about tribalism here; personally, I think that's the only way to create a stable society where everyone provides and gets their fair share. If there's a lot to eat, everyone eats. If there's little to eat, everyone goes hungry. People who are too lazy to work or are incorrigible troublemakers get exiled and have to fend for themselves in the wilderness. Children, the sick and the elderly are being taken care of by the whole tribe. Can't imagine a better way to live.

I'd like to know who started this dumbing down. It seems to have started with the schools and the media. It seems the people perpetuated it by demanding less mental stimulation. Somewhere along the line, the "work ethic" was promoted as god. If we thought the job market was full of useless jobs, we were lazy communists. Country music, patriotism, and religion bloomed. We were masterfully programmed us to make us want to fight for our slavery.

I don't understand the concept of NOT having to work for food. We are not 'owed' anything by anyone.

For shelter...someone would have to build a shelter for you...or at the very least supply you with materials to build your own. Who's going to do that...and would they be paid? That would be slavery too right?

The truth is you are not entitled to anything material. You have to EARN what you get in this world. This includes food, clothing, and anything else to survive. And it doesn't stop there. Some people want more than just the basic necessities so they work longer hours, get a better education, find more competitive wages, or the other countless ways of increasing your income.

These people are just as much slaves to their wants as others are to food.

Also, I question your 1 percent stat in regards to how many people grow the rest of the world's food.

Where did you get the number? You are forgetting so many others involved in this massive procedure. What about distributors? What about cultivators? What about the people who put in the sprinkler systems? What about the people who built and designed the sprinkler systems? What about the people that keep the products fresh until people come to pick up the food? It's not just the pickers that grow food. There are a ridiculous amount of people involved with this.

So assuming we lived in your implied wonderful society we all just only cared about the basics...like food and shelter. So it would be fair would we all have to learn how work the crops? Who would teach us? Upon birth would a child have to start working....or would we give that parent extra food? Wouldn't that mean that someone would have to "work" harder for that child? What about the elderly...what do we do with them when they can no longer do their share working the crops? What about maintaining properties?

/begin satire

The real problem here is that food is making people slaves. I have a simple suggestion....QUIT EATING! Do NOT become a slave to food. And shelter? Who needs it!?!? Do not be a slave to food or shelter! Let's plan a revolt just to show food and shelter that we don't need them!

/end satire

Saying that there is no need to work and that working should not be connected with food and shelter truly shows just how much of an American/Britain/Canadian you really are. Let go of your feeling of entitlement and get out there and make something of yourself.

Agreed. Not only does the system keep us enslaved, it also forces us to push the real cost of our goods onto the poorest 80% of the global population. That Iphone you just bought is fueling a resource war in the Congo and that chocolate bar was picked by a 12 year old African slave boy. Not too mention hundreds of thousands of civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq. People on here love to talk about the global elite controlling everything, and that may be true, but if you are making more than $10 a day you ARE the global elite. Your way of life poisons and destroys and consumes.

I think another thing we would have to do to get out of this quagmire is stop thinking about the "global population" and stop meddling in other people's affairs (which specifically we Americans are incredibly good at). Most of the countries in Africa, for example, were fine before colonialism was drawing artificial borders, separating related tribes from each other and throwing others together who didn't like each other from the get-go. Same with the Middle East. Also, if we didn't interfere, those countries would have settled their own problems sooner or later, but we're the ones assassinating democratically elected leaders and putting "US-friendly" dictators in place. We're the ones flooding a country with aid money that only ends up in the coffers of the corrupt government leaders. We're the ones telling countries like Haiti they should stop just take care of their own agricultural needs, that they have to export, export, export... that's why they're all in such dismal condition.

If we could just leave everyone alone and focus on our own land and our own problems, everything would be much more peaceful and the so-called "poor" countries would be much less poor.
