Freedom Is Scary

Freedom defined-
"The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint."

True freedom is a lofty ideal, one that could not be put into place today. That however doesn't mean we shouldn't strive for it, and someday achieve it.

The reason freedom is scary is because it is a uncertainty, uncertainty in ourselves and uncertainty in others. We believe that without laws and rules society would crumble. That true freedom or anarchy would spawn a tyranny in of itself. Perhaps that is true, in our current times and past times, there is always someone looking for control over another or another group looking for control over another group. Or rather a tribe looking for dominance over another tribe. I believe however that we will someday as a species overcome those fears and that these fears themselves became invalid and no truer than the bogyman in our closets. As of right now though, we as a species still divided ourselves into these tribes.

We identify ourselves first by our nation (region, distract, school), then our race, political beliefs (and or religious) our families and lastly as an individual. We are becoming more self aware of this however, which we can see by the civil rights movement. Making the chain smaller now "We identify ourselves first by our nation, political beliefs our families and lastly as an individual." Soon the chain will be broken and will identify not only ourselves but each other as individuals. Not as opposing tribes. While we still follow our tribal behaviors, we can't achieve true freedom. Freedom form others and freedom for others. We fear freedom because we fear the freedom of another group. We fear the freedom of others because what they might do with said freedom.

We also fear freedom because it means freedom for our own group. No longer a tribe but an individual, would mean we would have to strive for our own wellbeing and come to conclusions without the guidance of our tribes. We are not ready for true freedom, but we should not abandon or give up those ideals in the name of "safety" or supposed order. Letting go of the world of black and white, of right and wrong, to see it for what it is, gray is truly something hard to do.

Even with these obstacles a noble ideal shouldn't be thought of as a impossible goal, with that attitude we would have never achieved flight, built cities, or breached the heavens to walk on the moon. To overcome the obstacles of the impossible and make it possible is what we set out to strive for since perhaps the first man or women. True Freedom is possible and achievable, as long as we do not give up the fight for it. As long as we take every wrench in the process as just another hurtles to leap over, as just another mountain to climb. We will overcome it, and see it through. The only thing that stops us right now is fear.

This is a short essay I've been working on which will become part of a book. I would much appreciate ATS critique and criticism and or additions to my works.

Couldn't agree more.

Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty.
