sure, he didnt build the craft, or design the craft, or understand the theories and science that makes the craft work.. but he sure sat in it and didnt die one little bit.

There's little doubt that C. Yeager understood the theories and science that makes the craft work, if not at a PhD level, certainly more than 99.9% of the population. It's part of his job to understand them, because he is a very expensive data acquisition system.
