Dumbing down? That game's single player campaign is geared almost directly at most ATS'ers.

Who doesn't love the JFK angle. Hell they even mention the bilderburg's, illuminati, Counicl of 300 etc.

I love that game.

Sgt. Frank Woods is the best video game character OF ALL TIME!

You're right about the historical aspect, and conspiracy bonus with JFK angle.. but I HATED that game

A while back we visited a casino. As we headed to the poker room we came across a commotion. The house had cordoned off a bank of 12 slot machines sitting back to back in two rows of 6. Sitting at each machine were 12 people frantically pushing 12 buttons with 12 fingers, pushing pushing pushing as fast as they could. Topping this there was a man all dressed up in a tuxedo with a microphone announcing the progree of this competition. And on top of this even were the dozen or so people standing around watching.

Of course I don't really know if this is any worse than all the rest of the people slouched around their machines with cigs hanging from their mouths and a drink in their hand tossing coin after coin into the machines.

Gaming entertainment. Yeah it's real good for us.

You made me
at 12 fingers. I've seen the tournament slot machines sectioned off but never watched a session in progress. I imagine it looks somewhat like a bingo hall once a number is called?

The zombie effect is why I don't like going to casino's and skip through as fast as I can when navigating to the movie theaters. The barrage of dim lighting, bright slot machine lights, loud beepings from the slot machines and at one point smoke in the casino overloads the senses and could give me a claustrophobic mindset and yes it could be really easy to sit in front of the penny slots and spin spin spin without thinking. There isn't as much smoke as there used to be which is a good and bad thing. Good not as much 2nd hand smoke, bad it's because there are less gamblers and that is really hurting those in the casino job field who rely on tips and hours to support their families.

As far as video games go...some require more skill than others, but the easier ones are set to encompass a wide age group from kids, teens, adults and older. Take the wii/wii fit sports, zelda game, psychonauts, mario, resident evil games and compare them to the xbox's red dead redemption, Fable, GTA or pc's Spore, Alice or Myst. Each have their own challenges and target audience. You also have to take into account programming issues that might come up and it's all about the almighty dollar so maybe they scrap some of the challenges in order to get a stunningly mapped and textured game get published on its deadline. Who knows just wanted to put my .02 cents in there although I've never played COD, or any other of the military FPS games unless you count goldeneye for n64 so I don't really see the point in playing the military games. Just my taste in games, my friends enjoy those games but I get bored watching them play.

I've been disappointed in recent FPS's.
Gone are the medpacks, now it's only : If ever it's too hard, hide and wait for health to come back.
Also, FPS's are now sooooooo slow, where is Doom 1-2? Oh no, now it's gears of war speed.

Games are dumbed down compare to before and it really shows in many aspects that a lot of you noticed!

Sure Call of Duty games really suck (imo) but they don't destroy independent thinking.
Well it doesn't destroy it more then what is usually popular.

Its funny, because this is disproven when someone dislikes the series, like me. They're just recreating the same game over and over again, which is why I don't touch it.

Games remain the same due to lazy development and using the same things game after game reliant on the franchise name alone.

Also, IQ has improved over time and videogames help hand-eye coordination significantly as studies have shown since the early 90s.

I take it you're not a gamer?

You are right. I saw a comment about a study, COD fans wear tested and football player's wear tested. This is the result of brain washing. They do not spend millions of dollars developing a game witch goes out to 100's of millions of people to entertain you. Why would they waist the chance to influence your life? That can be said about any major main stream piece of media. COD is one of the only games you can illegaly download and play online. I think they did this on purpose. The more people that play the more they can hook and brain wash.

I hate it when games make you earn a weapon or a perk. Its like the study's they did with rats and birds, if you press the button the right amount of times you get food. But just enough food so that you are still hungry and want to press the button again.

We would be way beyond what we have now if it was not for the counsel. We should be seeing more game developers pushing the limit's of these new cards and CPU's just like crysis did. I hope the next big counsel has hardware upgradeable options. Or at least a new counsel every 2 years.

But in the end counsels are not the problem. Its the big company's that want to make money. I believe NVIDIA and ATI can develop a card that would be at least a generation away from what we are seeing now and make it affordable. But really, what makes more money? The same cards with with a little extra zaz slowly building up, or a HUGE leap to a bad ass card, pushing us closer to unlimited graphic power.

If nvidia went from the 7900 to the 580 then they would miss out on all that cash they could have made from the 8800, 9800 and the 200's. Their is a reason why they release a weaker series before they release a stronger one. For example the 9800 and the 200 and the 400 to the 500. The 200 came out right after the 9800 after every one bought a 9800Gx2 the 200 series was released so they went out and bought a GTX 295 and bricked the 9800gx2. When the 500 series was released every one bricked their 400's and bought a 500.

A GTX 275 can play ANY GAME on the market with high settings give or take. Their is no reason to upgrade. Crysis was a reason for people to upgrade. But you spend $500 + $500 on your older generation card to play a $40 dollar game. DONT UPGRADE IF ITS THE SAME #. Its about time we start fighting back.

I've played COD online for years and I would have to say that my empathetic nature has improved over time. My clients at work often tell me that I am the most helpful when it comes to providing supportive counseling, advice, or community resource referrals. Now could it be that my line of work is actually the thing that is heightening my empathy? Perhaps, but it also doesn't seem like video games are hurting me either.

As far as intelligence goes I can say that I haven't been affected negatively.

On a slightly off topic note, I'm surprised I haven't seen any talk about Deus Ex: Human Revolutions on ATS. That game focuses heavily on the Illuminati and would be ripe for conspiracy theorists to pick apart.

Its not so much that consoles are designed to dumb you down, its moreso consoles are THE BEST cash cows vs the PC.

Why?

Piracy started growing rampantly because the company motto's got changed to "make the best, most enjoyable, fun and unique game out there" to "pump out games which can be followed by sequels as quickly as possible for more $$" - People started to begrudge paying $100 for a brand new PC game. Purely because the people knew, could feel and see, the quality of their games degrading.

Few points that you bought up. They love the EXCUSE that the hardware is limited by the console. Have you noticed we've had no new advancments in gaming engines, graphics engines, or pc architecture since the PS3 and Xbox 360 hit the market?

This was when PC game developers gave up and blamed Piracy for lack of PC sales, and also the Consoles for stealing the market.

Ever since consoles became the main market for games everything went down the #ter.

Because developers quickly realised that:

They no longer need to go the extra mile with their game engine to make it better, more capable and functinal than others, because the hardware platform does not change. Why invest millions into a new or upgrading a game engine when you've been guarenteed you'll be able to use whatever you have currently for 10 years minamum (average lifetime of a console before the next version is released)

Because the need for new and unique game engines has died out - it limits what kind of games can be produced due to the engines functionality/capability. Occasionaly you'll get a "new" engine - or one that seems new, it's still limited by 10 year old hardware, and is no real advancement or achievement, its simply bending whats currently in existance to suit their needs. But this is a main cause for so many "re hashed" and "cloned" games.

Money and Copyrights. There is way, way way way too much legal obsticales for companies to go around with PC gaming and piracy. With consoles its easy. why?

With a console - all the hardware is owned/under lisence to one company - we'll use the Xbox/Microsoft as an example. Because the product is theirs in a complete package, rather than a PC with interchangable parts from different manufacturers - they're able to put a terms and conditions on the front which specificly covers them against copyrights. Meaning, even tho the console gaming community WANTS to pirate, for the same reasons they were/wanting to pirate before the consoles came to the scene, they cant/wont because they know if they do it, microsoft pretty much takes a gun and shoots their console in the head.

I have yet to hear of any other product that includes a killswitch that can be activated at any time by the company whom made it, for any reason they so choose, and the company is entirely in the right for destroying you're property. Dont believe me? Go take another look thru your'e T&C. It can be activated at ANY time for ANY reason they choose, tho they MOSTLY use it for removing pirates.

games arnt worth $100 any more, the new call of duty/battlefield should honestly only be around the $30-40 around release for the ammount of enjoyment/play you will get out of single player - which is # all because its copy+paste and all the core work of the game - is pulled straigh from another game - meaning all the work that went into making this new game was just minute changes to existing content

Hell look at the PC hardware market. Notice how everything's suddenly become dirt cheap? Hardware progression is also starting to die off because of consoles. PC gaming kept pushing hardware to its limits, allways requiring something better, faster, more capable. With everyone making games "cross-platform" - so the same software will run on PC, Xbox and PS3 together - it means the PC version is designed to work with ancient hardware. Even at highest settings it wont make you're PC break out a sweat. No demand for superior equipment is killing the market.

The real kicker about this whole situation is, WE have let it get like this.

Australia had a news article a few years back, centred around why PC/Console games cost double the price over here in comparison to the USA. One game developer/company stepped forward to the camera, and said with a smile "Australians are willing to pay MORE for the same product".

5 years on, we're still doing it.

We have the power to change what they're doing and how they're doing it. Unfortunately change for the better im having doubts will ever come. Because consoles are the new babysitters of this generation. Every kid has one, and the reason they ahve it is because their parents want their kids to shut up and leave them alone while they recover from work/continue to ignore the responsibilitys they have as being a parent.

I would say that correlation does not automatically imply causation. I think a more accurate interpretation would be that people have gotten more stupid, therefore gaming has gotten dumbed down a lot.

I bought a PSP instead of the full console this generation of platforms. So far the games have had more time logged into them then I ever did when owning a console. I have a 600+ hours save on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and still have yet to conquer the game. I have found the portable games have had much better producers and artists that care more about the gameplay and presentation(low poly modelers are creme of the crop). There are also a huge number of "rouge likes" on the PSP as well for any insane rpg'ers. I can't wait for the PSVita. The handheld super console is far more fun, I just hope they don't let any of the PS3 devs on it and stink it up.

Also, to those saying consoles are killing PC development, it's just not true. Most people do not need a computer hence the console is a smart choice. How can anyone begrudge someone for not wanting to upgrade a computer every three months just to run the lastest greatest graphic superpower of a game? PC developers also cater to the "first person" type of player as they almost never make other gameplay mechanics due to no standard control method outside of keyboard and mouse. Bloated control schemes can kill a game sometimes

Credibility? I think I drew the right conclusions considering what our world has come to. COD really is one of the only games that you can play online illegaly. All other games have GRATE protection against it but COD 2,3,4,WAW,MW2 have been cracked to play online. You dont see that with BFBC2 or any other major FPS. You would think after COD 3 they would have learned by now. # COD mw2 has ALTERiw witch is a ILLEGAL server base WITH DEDICATED SERVERS and it still has not been shut down. Its been up since at least least 2009 December I wonder why

You see it with all of them actually. That's why piracy protection has become so draconian.

Because they realize it doesn't actually cost the game maker money. Because MW2 is old as hell (relativistically) and therefore irrelevant. There are a few more reasons like where the servers are hosted and what laws would actually apply, if any.

Just because something lies outside of a company's control doesn't make it "illegal".

"Do games, and consoles kill independent thinking?
Seems the only people who game on consoles and play call of duty, are bro-gamers (people from fraternities, generally the low i.q'd, and 13 year olds). "

Anything that a child or student is permitted to do on a level that distracts from their studies may easily result in poor school grades. When one is in school that is supposed to be their primary job: learning, achieving, studying.

Adults that over-indulge in game play for an extended period can't be expected to be very knowledgeable of world events and popular topicality if the primary core of their life centers around playing games. The same can be said for sports fanatics. Arrested development comes in many forms.

The most severe case i've ever seen was a warehouse worker i knew. My wife had dubbed him 'the missing link'.
Observing him in public or the workplace many mistook him for being impaired or mentally retarded. This adult male had no goals whatsoever, happy to sponge off his Father with no thought to living on his own or contributing toward the bills (he was 30 when I met him; I worked in the same company for 13 years). He was clueless and ignorant toward most any topic or event outside of sports. When he spoke about sports it was like seeing an idiot savant that was helpless but could play piano like a master. The amount of statistics and miscellaneous data that could fly out of his mouth regarding pro sports teams and players was staggering. Obviously he had mental capabilities but he had chosen to squander his potential on meaningless trivia.

Games have also been dumbed down abit simply because they are now more about storytelling than to beat a highscore.
In the old days you'd have impossibly hard games to beat... but they had no or very little story line. The objective was to basically get the highest score possible or to get as far as you could. Now games are more like films. A story is needed to be told so to make that work you have to make the game easier to allow all players to win and see the ending.
I think thats a really big factor in the dumbing down of games.
Plus the games publishers want to target as much of the market as they can to achieve the highest profits. So the obvious thing to do is to make the game easier and therefore more accessible to a wider demographic... simple business sense really.
I don't think there is any conspiracy in this. Its just more storytelling in games and smarter business sense by games publishers.

I was going to mention Minecraft - which is the complete opposite of dumbing down, it's an open ended sandbox which allows you to play the game whatever way you wish - from forming complex mines and doing resource runs, or creating complex circuits with an item called redstone (with some amazing and inventive techniques) or just plain old exploring and building. Minecraft is a fantastic game, leaving most of the fun to your own imagination.

It's coming out on Xbox very soon.

wooow calm down its just a game... If you don't like it don't play it, don't turn it into a conspiracy! Everyone has their own type of game they like to play. I personally play a variety of video games, because I just like them in general. COD sells simply because people like it.. I enjoy MW2 and am looking forward to MW3 and its WW3 theme, why because its FUN and I'm logical thinking person that knows its not real. My buddies and I enjoy online games of MW2(Not black ops... we don't like the way it plays..) and enjoy seeing who will unlocking weapons and sharing the pros and cons of each. We also all have health social lives and enjoy fun in the real world. As for the "Teamwork" argument its called "Team Deathmatch" and if you have social team mates with a mic you can actually strategically work together and defeat the opposing team. How ever I do feel these games could be too violent for children with bad parents whom don't teach them right from wrong. I personally have been allowed to play rated M games since I was a child and turned out fine. My parents drilled into my head that television and video games were not real and shouldn't be attempted in real life, although even a young age this was a "duh" to me.
What I'm trying to say is guys its just a game just like the rest, or anything else, sure some people can take it to the extreme and occasionally there is that jerk kid that blames it on the video games but, I feel honestly that's more of a underlying problem of the individual.
Now lets get out there and enjoy some video games!! whoooo!!

Seems to me you're along the lines of those the OP is referrng to.

For his irks, it's the way the game has been eased back in terms of how you perform actions, and it's definitely been coded to a console standard then ported to a PC, since COD2 to be honest.

But, instead of game play and skill.... Oh man, CRYSIS 2 is soooo purrrrty... I didn't get into crysis much at all.. But then, I turn back gfx in order to have a decent game, if I'm playing... I don't need flowers..
