Why blaming the elites won't work.

Pushing all our problems off on the elites of the world is a losing game.

Here's what I think we should do instead.

Elites are a necessary part of society.

As far as I can tell, every society that ever existed had some sort of elite group that was an integral part of it. Whether it be the ruling council of a tribe or the Board of Directors of a multinational corporation, someone has to take responsibility for the whole show. It's a necessary job, and not that enviable. We think of the bloodline traditions of the ruling elites of Europe as a method for hoarding power. But you could also think of it as a way of forcing someone to do the job.

Being in an elite group is not always fun.

Who really wants to be a member of the elite? In a large, complex society the work can seem endless and overwhelming. One wrong move and you can ruin the lives of thousands of people or more at one time. Who wants to work under that kind of pressure?

Everyone comes to you for help in solving their problems. And if you can't figure out a good solution, you have no one but your God to appeal to. And if you make a mistake, everyone will blame you for it. What about their responsibility in the matter? It could get to be pretty frustrating.

Elites have the same basic problems as the rest of us.

They might manage to keep their basic human needs satisfied, but otherwise, they are still humans. They have their own internal demons, as well as all the external ones.

They have to deal with the phenomenon that has come to be known as “mental illness” just like the rest of us do. Just like us, most of them don't know what causes this phenomenon or what to do about it. An attack of depression, or rage, can ruin a person's ability to do his job and leave him at the mercy of the “witch doctors” of society.

Of course they have to deal with physical illness as well, which has a lot of the same problems associated with mental illness, when you get right down to it.

They have to deal with natural disasters. It could be something that happens to them where they live, or something that happens to the area they are responsible for. What do you do about earthquakes, volcanoes, major storms? These can be real challenges for all of us.

And they have to deal with various external forces that don't care about their responsibilities but only the allure of their power. These external forces can all be lumped into one basic category: Criminality. They can infiltrate a group and destroy it.

The special challenge of criminality.

We all have to deal with criminality. It exists at all levels of society. It is poorly understood, and this gives it a certain power over us in addition to its willingness to resort to totally amoral tactics to control people.

If it weren't for criminality, life might be bearable. It might even be kind of fun. But criminality lurks in the background behind all our activities, sucking the life - the fun - out of them. It exists as physical activity, like stealing, manufacturing and dealing drugs, carrying out acts of terror. And it also exists as a mental activity; lying to us, playing on our emotions and weaknesses, constantly trying to find ways to frighten us and control us.

Most of us think that no one understands criminality or knows what to do about it. It seems like something we just have to live with. But that idea, above all others, is what is killing us today. Because it is just part of their propaganda campaign. There is always something you can do about criminality, even if you might not feel brave enough personally to do it. It can at least be exposed.

But beyond that, there is more. The basics of criminality have been understood since about the 1960's, and handlings have been worked out for it. These have been tried out here and there with pretty good results. We don't know about this because our elites have been sufficiently infiltrated that the information that reaches most of us is heavily controlled.

What we need to do.

There are two major parts to handling criminality. One is systemic and one is technological.

When criminality is very active in an area, that area will be unable to function properly. The criminals will actively prevent workable solutions from being applied in an area under their control. Thus, to expose and restrain criminal activity is a basic in any society. This is commonly known as “police work.” It is a controversial subject because of course the police are a popular target for criminals, and crime will do all it can to compromise or nullify police efforts to “fight crime.”

The first problem with modern police work is this “fight crime” paradigm. That puts the police right down at the same level as the criminals. The system has been rigged to do this. We need to “un-rig” it. The police, and honest people in general, must be able to maintain a level above the level of the criminal. And this is a real problem for us. Some of us might be familiar with the Christian teaching of “turn the other cheek.” What advantage does this give the Christian? It gives him an ethical advantage. And unfortunately, that's about the only advantage he gets. Do you have to be a saint to be really effective against crime? Short answer: Yes.

But look at what some Palestinian women (for example) have been willing to do to show their non-violent opposition to scare tactics used by autocratic occupation forces (in this case, Israeli soldiers). There are still people on this planet willing to be saints!

I may be overstating the problem a bit. But probably I'm not. The real job of the police and honest citizens is to expose crime, not punish it. That gives honest people an ethical advantage. Punishment is a criminal tactic. Discovering the truth is a non-criminal tactic. The system must be re-rigged to expose truth. That is our only hope for creating a system to handle crime that does not itself turn criminal.

Would this mean a decrease in what we call “privacy?” Maybe. But you would know, in such a system, that if you were punished or ridiculed for some piece of information about you that happened to surface, the source of that would be a criminal source. In a non-criminal society, any form of punishment or ridicule would be seen as a sign of criminal influence, and would be duly investigated.

A technology for handling criminality.

Obviously, such a society would understand something about criminality that most of us don't understand. And that understanding would be embodied in a technology for handling criminality. In such a society, that technology would be known and widely used.

I have already referred to that technology in this article. There is no need to go into great detail about it here. It goes without saying that honest people would have to learn and use this technology and that criminals would try to prevent them from doing this. Of course, the only real threat that this technology has to the criminal is that it could make him honest, thus ending his game as a criminal. Boo-hoo. But he will do everything he can to convince you that it is the most vile and despicable technology on the face of the planet!

As I mentioned, this is not pie-in-the-sky. Such technology has been tested with good results. It is already in wide use in its milder forms. I have even experienced it myself. It wasn't that bad.

Do you really want the world to change?

I have met a lot of people who think there is nothing we can do about these problems. They are so convinced of this that you would think that they need the problem of crime to make life sufficiently interesting. Really? The Japanese tsunami victims didn't need crime to make life more interesting! Texans fighting huge wildfires did not need crime to make life more interesting! Farmers battling a locust infestation in Russia did not need crime to make life more interesting! I say: Get over it! There is plenty going on out there to make life more interesting. We don't need crime, which specializes in turning people against each other when they should be cooperating, to be a part of the mix. If you want to fight people for a living, become a boxer!

People aren't going to stop being criminals merely because they are exposed.

They will only stop by way of force.

Your thesis has a serious logical flaw. If the job were "unenviable" then why would people seek it? Why do the people who have it not want to give it up? Because they are so benevolent that they would sacrifice their own 'discomfort' for the good of the many? No.

The very people who are best suited for the job are the ones who don't want it.
