Night and Day

Hurry the night and speed the day
Love’s brief union is moments away
She rushes towards him with hastened wings
He hears her in the distance, his dark heart sings

Theirs is a love both tragic and blessed
For their hearts can only join when day is put to rest
Or when the night is done with its ebony patrol
They have mere seconds for their hearts to extol

For at these brief moments - at dusk and dawn
They speed towards each other, then speed past, forlorn.
Unable to stop, even to touch fingertips
They can’t pause in love’s moment, nor sweetly touch lips

Day and Night, enamored since the dawn of the ages
Their story is penned on celestial pages
These star-crossed lovers from two separate spheres
Live each moment for the seconds when the other appears

To him, she is a light to lift his darkened soul
To her, he is magic that sets her heart aglow
The sky’s hues are richest at sunset and sunrise
For we see the color of their passion as they briefly lock eyes

They leave writings for one another, in codes we can’t see
Ciphers that mere mortals couldn’t possibly read
Our vision is not such that we can see these messages
Our hearts are not calibrated to interpret such vestiges

They are relayed to the wildlife, the rivers, the trees
Hidden in the rain, the wind and the seas
The weeping willow cries to Night, “How she does love thee”
The dolphins chatter to Day, “You are all that he can see”

The wolf isn't just baying at Night's stars and moon
He translates their flickering messages, and begins his nightly croon
He howls Night's words for all the birds to hear
Then they sing them sweetly to Day as she appears

Some phenomenon may seem strange to our unknowing eyes
But Sailing Stones in the desert are simply messages of love, scribed
Aurora Borealis is their symphony of hope with lights gleaming
The Taos Hum is their voices united, with the earth held in between

A millennia ago, he wrote her a sweeping romance
Leaving words and letters in places she might happen to glance
He hid one word a day over thirty cycles of the moon
Writing her a tome, ever so slowly, to convey his love in runes

She would spend her days seeking his words of devotion
Looking in the woods, the skies and the oceans
She found the word “heart” written in the Sahara dunes
“Inamorata” was laid in the tall grasses one June

“Evermore” was scribed upon the egg of a starling
The Danube river whispered to her, just one word… “Darling”
She coiled these words together and heard his voice in every verse
Felt his touch in every sentence, held his passion with each word

In kind the Day relays her longing to the Night
In ways that that he will see, though she is held not in his sight
The Nightblooming Cereus opens but one evening each year
Thus Day whispers every noon into its cactus-shaped ear

Words of heartbreaking ardor and soaring adulation
Until a year’s worth of love is bundled in this flowery creation
And as it blooms that one night her story unfolds
Every petal just for him, each an opus of devotion in prose

Solstice is most difficult, their longest hours spent apart
The seconds move like days with such slow movements of the heart
Very rarely can they meet and finally, thankfully touch lips
We see it as the darkness of a solar eclipse

That is when Night covers Day with his swarthy frame
They savor the moments as their hearts dance aflame
Would that the world could stay dark such as this
So these lovers could remain ever nestled in bliss...

But that is not the fate of these two paramours
They are never to live with the one they adore
Instead they provide us with the warm light of day
And night for us to rest after the world is put away.

So the next time you find yourself under a sunlit sky
Whisper to the Day, “Night loves you til the end of all time”
You will be rewarded with a rainbow or a sweet bird’s refrain
Perhaps an angel-shaped cloud or fiery sunset, sustained

And when you next venture out under the light of the moon
Tell Night that he does indeed make the Day swoon
You’ll be gifted with a shooting star or perhaps a whole array
Or a moon that shines almost as brightly as the sun by day.

Hold close their story of love to your heart
Make a wish as you witness dawn and dusk, as they part
For although they are not to be held by the other
Theirs is a romance for the ages, these are timeless lovers

Outstanding...

I have little to no talent in skills of poetry, but I know talent when I see it.
