IHOP Shooting: Multiple People Reportedly Shot In Carson City, Nevada

Multiple people have been shot at an IHOP restaurant in Carson City, Nevada, according to local media reports.

According to KOLO-TV, initial details are sketchy but the shooting took place on the 3800 block of Carson Street.

At least eight were shot and the gunman was carrying a semi-automatic weapon, The Record-Courier reports. "Several people were killed," according to the Carson City Sheriff's Department.

The shooting occurred just prior to 9 a.m., per The Record-Courier, which adds the suspect is reportedly "down."

UPDATE: The Carson City Sheriff's Office tells the AP that the IHOP is clear and the building is secure.

In all seriousness though they should ban guns. No guns = no gun violence. Keeps the crazies from owning weapons.

He says multiple people were wounded, including the shooter. He says the person who authorities believe to be the shooter has been transported to a hospital "and is probably going to die."

surely america should adopt mandatory gun ownership so that the moment any idiot pulls a gun in a public space everyone else pulls their guns and sends him 6 feet deep before he can cause trouble

Shooter confirmed dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound

Fran Hunter, who works at Sierra Le Bone, a pet shop, just north of the IHOP, was having breakfast this morning at the Casino Fandango.

As she came out, two guys on motorcycles said they heard shots.

Hunter said the suspect came out of IHOP and shot out the windows of the barbecue place. He fired shot at least two shots toward Casino Fandango.

"I was standing in front of Fandango, and somebody said, 'Oh he shot himself,' " Hunter said.

10:50 a.m. update: The Carson City Sheriff's Office is confirming that the shooter is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Just an update from the press conference.

10 people shot.. 9 victims and the shooter.
11 agencies responded.

So far there have been 3 deaths, not all of them male.

Two died on the scene, and one during surgery.

At least 2 of the deceased were military, and in uniform.

The gunman is in the hospital with a self inflicted wound, and is not expected to survive.

Edit to update:

The shooter has just been confirmed dead by AP.

Aside from the two military members that have died, two of the other victims were also in uniform, making a total of 4. This caused bases in the area to go into a heightened state of alert, as well as government buildings to go into lock-down mode for some time.

The next press conference is at 3pm PST.

We should leave this notion of banning guns behind. It's like wanting to burn all of the Harry Potters. Seriously, we're talking about a device that is 700 years old. Its a barrel, a projectile, and a propellant - so unless you can ban all of those then you cannot ban guns. The less educated people will resort to knives but those with as least as much intelligence as those that lived hundreds and hundreds of years ago will make new ones and then only the bad guys and the police (whats the difference?) will have them.

I don't follow your logic on this one, banning guns will eliminate violence? Hate to brake it to you but criminals could give a damn less about what is banned, banning guns just makes the law abiding citizens more vulnerable. If everyone on the block was carrying weapons openly a criminal would think twice before doing something stupid, IMO.

There is a lot of unhinged people out there that can easily buy a gun. Gun violence would be zero if it was illegal for having one and harsh sentences for owning any. If everyone had guns it would make gun violence worse, bad enough people get in random fights with people they don't know last thing you need is them having guns to kill each other with.

Sheriff Ken Furlong of the Carson City Sheriff's Office declined to identify the suspect, who he said used an automatic weapon in the shootings.

If this really was a full auto weapon than there is a chance he got it from military stocks.

My profile of the perp:

--He probably lived alone or had become estranged from his family.

--He was suffering extreme financial stress at the time, possibly having been separated from the service within the last two years.

--Friends may notice abrupt changes in mood in the days and weeks before the shooting.  He may have complained that lately he has experienced strange and vivid dreams of a violent nature.

--He will be dressed in all black and/or camoflage. 

--Eyewitnesses at the scene will say the shooter was 'like a robot,' or that there were a totally blank expression on his face.

--The media will paint him as a loner, but he will in fact have a circle of friends or be part of a clique.

--Extra ammo/guns/bombs will be found at his home and in his auto(this to 'close the circle' of guilt in the public's mind).  The guns will have been legally acquired by the shooter or a close relative/neighbor.   He will have brought an excessive quantity of ammunition to the scene. 

--He will be computer-savvy, and likely left an online presence.   He may have left some kind of manifesto, though it will be incomprehensible/nonsensical for the most part.  He will have hinted at what he had planned, but the name of the target itself will not be mentioned. 

--He will probably have been a player of violent video games, and will have been a fan of violence-themed movies.  He will have produced his own videos in which he is seen with his weapons or expressing his hatred and/or violence.

--He will have a strong interest in weapons--guns, knives, swords, bombs--or the military. 

--He will have had contact with a military recruiter or he will have spent some time in the military before being seperated under murky circumstances.

--He will have been mentally "treated" at some point by a counselor, psychologist, or a psychiatrist. 

--He will have a history of taking SSRIs(selective seritonin reuptake inhibitors).

--There is some likelihood that he was institutionalized or hospitalized at some point before the attack.  At any rate there will gaps in the timeline where police cannot account for his whereabouts.

--He probably had some contact with the police/law enforcement before the shooting.

--If he survived the assault, he will be unable to explain why he did what he did.  He may claim that 'voices' in his head told him to do it.  Or he may not even remember the act at all.   But whether the shooter lives or dies, motive will always remain a mystery.

It seems most of the victims were uniformed National Guard members

Shooter was a 32 year old Hispanic male. Had no ties to this particular IHOP restaurant (so no ex girlfriend working there).

Seems odd that he would target only the Nevada National Guard soldiers eating lunch there. Perhaps he was rejected for military service? He did look rather overweight in the released photo, they also specifically stated that he did not serve in the US military.
