Gee Robert Gates seeing reality? Funny how he never said so publicly when he was in office...

Robert Gates Says Israel Is an Ungrateful Ally: Jeffrey Goldberg

In a meeting of the National Security Council Principals Committee held not long before his retirement this summer, Gates coldly laid out the many steps the administration has taken to guarantee Israel’s security -- access to top- quality weapons, assistance developing missile-defense systems, high-level intelligence sharing -- and then stated bluntly that the U.S. has received nothing in return, particularly with regard to the peace process.

Senior administration officials told me that Gates argued to the president directly that Netanyahu is not only ungrateful, but also endangering his country by refusing to grapple with Israel’s growing isolation and with the demographic challenges it faces if it keeps control of the West Bank. According to these sources, Gates’s analysis met with no resistance from other members of the committee.

None of these people have come out publicly saying these things. Well they SHOULD...

Maybe it would wake up some people... In Israel and the US... that Netanyahu is a bastard and that if Israel wants to still have the benefits, they need to act more like a friend and less like the little guy who goes around creating trouble because they have their larger friend behind them protecting them.

no, its the other way around. america is an ungrateful client state. but in seriousness, america is a sinking ship.

america can't go on spending for people to be their friends. as soon as the gravy train crashes, america is going to find itself burning with nobody even willing to throw them a bucket of water.

Israel is a bigger leech than the huge majority of the fakers on welfare in the U.S..

The right-wingers should be ranting about how Israel is draining us, along with these unpaid E$$$$$$PENSIVE wars and HUUUUGE wages, benefits and pensions of politicians... politicians who do less work in their LIFETIME than the average US worker does in a WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant about those DRAINS on our system right-winger-wealthy-boot-lickers...

...they wont though...

Drop Israel and the REAL LEECHES!!!!!

Israel never talk a lot of crap about us. But we do need to cut off aid to it because we are broke.

Wait, Gates is mad because Israel never agreed to accept money in lieu of allowing their country to be sliced and diced? Somebody needs to read the fine print.

Either get them to accept on paper a Palestinian state before giving them any more money, or just stop giving them money. But don't get mad at them for not doing something they weren't expected to do in the first place.

They've made themselves a lightning rod to attract all the hatred of the peoples of the middle east by their oppression of the Palestinian people. America, as their ally, gets the privilege of sharing in all of the hatred directed against Israel.

As a result, we have a never ending supply of enemies to keep our military-industrial complex busy now that we don't have to worry about the commies since the cold war ended.

[sarcasm]Don't say that Israel has never done anything for the US; they keep the money flowing in for companies like Halliburton and all those defense contractors. Without Israel, the employees of those companies would end up in the unemployment line like all the rest of us. You wouldn't want that to happen would you?[/sarcasm]

You don't need to be Robert Gates to see that Israel is an Ungrateful Ally. More like an ungrateful cancer on this world.

Yeah but if Robert Gates had the cojones to say it in public, to the medias, it may start a big debate and end up forcing congress to cut foreign aid to Israel.... or at least change Israel's behavior.

I have believed for some time now that a major undercurrent and rational of our blind allegiance to Israel is a direct result of the hard-core, hard-right evangelicals who are counting down to rapture - and they see Israel as a major signpost/requirement for that to happen.

S&F for the info - its good to see at least at some point, and in some way, these things are being spoken about in Washington, even if its behind closed doors - for now.
