2 Mexicans Deny Terrorism, Face 30 Years For Tweet

www.msnbc.msn.com

Prosecutors say the defendants helped cause a chaos of car crashes and panic as parents in the Gulf Coast city of Veracruz rushed to save their children because of false reports that gunmen were attacking schools.

"Here, there were 26 car accidents, or people left their cars in the middle of the streets to run and pick up their children, because they thought these things were occurring at their kids' schools,"

Im a tad bit speechless on this one. A former teacher started these rumors? What is this world coming to?
I found a thread already started on this in the Terrorism section of ATS, however the given OP was defending the gentlemen involved. I don't think he understood the chaos that was created from this "harmless" tweet.
Its just like screaming "Bomb!" on a plane, people are going to react.
However, IMO I dont see how many people could believe this guy. Its a social networking site for crying out loud. Im thinking one paranoid parent saw the tweet, called his/her kids classmate friends parents, and the news spread as such. I could see it.
Im sure these two guys are experiencing the epitome of *FACEPALM* right now.

Its the same as rehabilitating non violent drug users instead of locking them up for possession.

From the top why isn't the country being repaired, in Australia you would not believe something like this for a second.

This is weird.

People shouldn't believe everything they read on the internet, especially not on tweeters.

Yeah it's stupid to pull something like that... but it's even stupider to believe it.

Oh i absolutely agree, I cant believe that many people reacted to a tweet. Im not sure how the Mexican school system works but after Columbine (ironically i went to high school there) schools in the US alert family immediately of any type of threat, they dont leave it to a once-upon-a-time teacher to tweet about it.
Still stupid on his part.
Think people! THINK!

In Australia they prosecuted someone fror having child pornography on his computer. What were these horrible pictures? Bart and Lisa Simpsons cartoons, drawn by someone having a laugh.

The madness is shared equally arround the world.

As for this - if they were starting these runours on purpose then they deserve punishment - against the backdrop of violence they live in the only reason to start these rumours would be to cause panic. If they are telling the truth that they only passed on what they had reveiced, then it would not be fair to prosecute them.

That is madness from the legal system, as is this. However the point i was trying to make is that parents reading a tweet about gunmen in a school and believing it because of the environment they live in, is madness. I cannot speak for anywhere else. That is the connection i was making to Australia, in no way to gloat about living in a better country. We all have issues, although some more than others.

Ah! I see - sorry matey, I totally missed your point on that lol.

Yeah - you might be right you know. But look - if Australia had the problems listed in that article everyday, I would guess that they would be pretty jumpy too. Although I doubt it would go so far, as you rightly say.

justified ...

glad to see they are being made an example of

they deserve what they got , and now have plenty of time to think about it ...

if your a parent and you read something like that in your childrens school you would understand there reaction

but you bet your ass next time they will call the school and verify

now if only we could do this for misleading titles here on ATS and other websites with sensationalism

If i was the judge this would be an easy call but i think i would've gave them less time perhaps 5 years and posted there verdict all over the world news

to set an example for anyone else who wants to cause alarm with false information through social media websites...

you don't like it ? learn to raise your kids better or else the hammer of justice will come down on them HARD

Did anyone ask the parents why they didn't just call the schools to confirm the rumor before jumping to conclusions?

That would of been my first thought... not to react outlandishly about a Tweet of all things stupid...

Yeah, the way I read this article both parties were both "retweeting" something they themselves had received. I think 30 years and the "terrorist" label is unjustified.

30 years in prison and the label of "terrorist" is what I meant... it is an unjustified sentance. But it is Mexico and my opinion means less there than it does in the US (marginally)
