LONDON (Reuters) - Europeans are plagued by mental and neurological illnesses, with almost 165 million people or 38 percent of the population suffering each year from a brain disorder such as depression, anxiety, insomnia or dementia, according to a large new study.

With only about a third of cases receiving the therapy or medication needed, mental illnesses cause a huge economic and social burden -- measured in the hundreds of billions of euros -- as sufferers become too unwell to work and personal relationships break down.

Mental disorders have become Europe's largest health challenge of the 21st century," the study's authors said.

I didnt really believe this when I first saw the article. Over a third of Europeans have a mental illness? That sounds like a pretty high number for me.

I wonder what the cause of this is? I cant really think of anything.

Then the article says this.

Mental illnesses are a major cause of death, disability, and economic burden worldwide and the World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second leading contributor to the global burden of disease across all ages

Wittchen said that in Europe, that grim future had arrived early, with diseases of the brain already the single largest contributor to the EU's burden of ill health

How high will the numbers go? In the near future, will over half of the worlds population have mental disorders?

I deal with our European group as well as the 3000 user base there.

Its always been very obvious to me there were issues. Not even going to start with the case examples. Primarily the UK, France and Swiss for me, in that order. Other people may have different experiences though.

The world has always been crazy, it's just recently that we have had the statistics.

According to a thread I created awhile ago, HALF of Americans are on the same couch. But it's just for profit of course:

150,000,000 Americans Classified as Mentally ILL for Profit

And yet, there are no proven biological tests for mental illness. If they say yer nuts...it must be true because they say so.

Have a peek... Guess who?

www.sourcewatch.org...

In the early half of the 20th century, petrochemical giants organized a coup on the medical research facilities, hospitals and universities. The Rockefeller family sponsored research and donated sums to universities and medical schools which had drug based research. They further extended this policy to foreign universities and medical schools where research was drug based through their "International Education Board".

Establishments and research which were were not drug based were refused funding and soon dissolved in favor of the lucrative pharmaceutical industry. In 1939 a "Drug Trust" alliance was formed by the Rockefeller empire and the German chemical company IG Farben (Bayer). After World War Two, IG Farben was dismantled but later emerged as separate corporations within the alliance. Well known companies included General Mills, Kellogg, Nestle, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Procter and Gamble, Roche and Hoechst (Sanofi-Aventis).

The Rockefeller empire, in tandem with Chase Manhattan Bank (now JP Morgan Chase), owns over half of the pharmaceutical interests in the United States. It is the largest drug manufacturing combine in the world. Since WWII, the pharmaceutical industry has steadily netted increasing profits to become the world's second largest manufacturing industry; [3], [4] after the arms industry.

The Rockefeller Foundation was originally set up in 1904 as the General Education Fund. The RF was later formed in 1910 and issued a charter in 1913 with the help of Rockefeller millions. Subsequently, the foundation placed it's own "nominees" in federal health agencies and set the stage for the "reeducation" of the public.

A compilation of magazine advertising reveals that as far back as 1948, larger American drug companies spent a total sum of $1,104,224,374 for advertising. Of this sum, Rockefeller-Morgan interests (which went entirely to Rockefeller after Morgan's death) controlled about 80%

Probably if it means never being responsible for personal failings and a government handout.

Socialist economies need "victims" to take care of. Each diagnosis of mental trouble employs a whole host of doctors, Eurocrats, pencil-pushers, ministry staffers, etc. It is not surprising to me that they would have more people needing care because their entire system encourages dependence. So while I am sure there are millions of people in need of real mental care, I am as equally sure there are millions who don't need it and are getting it just to feed the Eurocrat administrative beast.

You know, I was thinking about this - and what does it really mean?

I think what it means is that MOST people are considered crazy by someone else.
SOME people let OTHER people tell them that they are crazy.

Western Civilization.
Here are the lyrics to a Randy Newman tune titled The Great Nations of Europe.

The Great Nations of Europe had gathered on the shore
they'd conquered what was behind them and now they wanted more
so they looked to the mighty ocean and took to the western sea
The great nations of europe in the 16th century

Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of europe comin through

The Grand Canary Islands first land to which they came
they slaughtered all the canaries there which gave the land its name
there were natives there called guanches, guanches by the score
bullet's, disease the portugese, they weren't there any more

now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
you never seen anyone so gone
there's pictures in a museum, some lines written in a book
but you won't find a live one, no matter where you look

Hide your wives and daughters, hide the groceries too
The great nations of europe comin through

columbus sailed for india found salvidor instead
he shook hands with some indians and soon they all were dead
they got tb and typhoid and athletes foot, diptheria and the flu
'scuse me great nations comin through

balboa found the pacific and on the trail one day
he met some friendly indians whom he was told were gay
soooooooooooooo
he had them torn apart by dogs on religious grounds they say
the great nations of europe were quite holy in their way

now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone
you never seen anyone so gone
some bones hidden in a canyon some paintings in a cave
they're no use tryin to save them, there's nothin left to save

hide your wives and daughters, hide your sons as well
with the great nations of europe you never can tell

where you and i are standing on the end of a century
europes have sprung up everyone as even i can see
but there on the horizon is the possiblity
that some bug from out of africa might come for you and me
destroying everything in it's path from sea to shining sea
like the great nations of europe in the 16th century

There are no socialist economies in Europe, in fact anywhere in the world, never has been.

A socialist economy is one where the workers own the means of production. It has nothing to do with liberal governments, and their social programs.

Europe, as well as the rest of the world, operate on a capitalist economy, meaning the means of production are primarily privately owned.

If you ask me everyone has a mental illness. You don't have to be a paranoid schizophrenic to have a mental illness.

A third of the people in the "test group", maybe. Stats like that are very, very broad because there's no way they can test "everyone" in Europe.

However, I'm mad - I will confirm to that

Labeling people as having certain disorders, whether it be mentaly ill, physically unwell, obese, etc. gives the governments of the world more justification to intrude on our private lives and institute their policies of social and economic control. That is all that this boils down to.

I personally feel that part of the increase in labeling people mentally ill is that then the government can use that "diagnosis" to restrict their rights and it could even go as far as to restrict their voting privilage in countries that have votes, due to their "mental illness".

I also think that another reason there has been an extreme increase in the diagnosis of mental illness is because of the dissidence that we are seeing across the globe with world governments. One of the best ways to silence a group is to label them as wack jobs.

I don't want to step out onto a slippery slope here but history has shown that through out the world when totalitarianism and dictatorships have risen to power they have always labeled the opponents of their movements as mentally ill, imprisoning them and in many instances have executed them. Hitler, Stalin, and Mao all used this strategy to further there agenda.

Really? Nothing at all comes to mind?

How about World War 2?

My mother is in her mid 50's and is just coming to terms with what she has experienced (she burried her traumas deep inside her in attempt to forget what she encountered as a young girl in Poland)

I can guarantee there are many more out there like this.

Just one thing though...

but that doesn't mean big pharma won't try to exploit this. IMO, such reactions are quite a normal reaction to extraordinary circumstances.
But because it's natural, it's not allowed! Big Pharma and the gov't must intervene and put you on prozac and clonazepam until you either commit suicide or become an emotionless zombie..

There is no suprise here...

When you go to a doctor with certain, non threatening health problems that won't go away, the chance is that the doc will say it is all due to "stress".

IMO, stress is the keyword here... lots and longterm stress leads to many other mental illnesses as depession and anxiety
The question is , what is causing the rise of stress in people over the last century (not just in Europe, but everywhere)? You need to just turn on your tv to find the answer to that.

The difference between 'now' and 'then' is that now everyone has a tv, everyone has internet, access to news by the minute it happens.
There is more economical pressure, pressure at work, pressure at school, pressure to perform better, deadlines and time pressure, money pressure within most households, more demanding kids, more demanding teachers, more demanding bosses, a chaotic political system which leads to more taxes, more bills, less financial freedom.
As for stress in women: most women don't have the choice to be a stay at home mom these days, they need to work for finanical reasons which results in, again, time pressure and stress.
Longterm stress leads to addiction, alcoholism, anorexia, obesitas.... the list goes on.

and not to forget the 'promotion' of meds is good money for the pharmaceutical industry. They even take it a step further: now even cats and dogs are being medicated for to lower their stress level, as if us humans weren't enough...

It's very easy to become depressed in the west. I think once your physical needs are met you start feeling depressed over emotional needs.

Over a third of Europeans suffer from mental illness

This is what happens when society keeps on trying to hammer round pegs into square holes ..
you end up with mentally deformed, bitter and twisted, nervous, depressed people..

There is nothing natural or nurturing about our way of living, working or loving any more .....
