Comet Elenin was here roughly 500 years ago on a different path?

Comet C/2010 X1 (Elenin) is following a hyperbolic path through the solar system.

It is not actually in orbit.

It was going straight past and has been deflected from that straight line by the Sun's gravity.

It has never gone through the solar system in the past, and will never return.

What you are seeing is the result of a variable going out of bounds in a Java applet, not real data. You are playing around with a computer simulation, not the real world. It follows the constraints of the computing environment, not reality.

(My guess it that they were using binary coded decimal for the positional information, but not for the interpretation of where to place the graphic, and you have just run off below zero for one of the coordinates).

That's precisely the idea I was going to clumsily attempt to express here.

Thanks for saving me the trouble and trauma of looking stupid.

Thanks for that input, it just seems like nobody wants to do anything themselves. Like their time is too precious or something.

If you make a thread and post your perspective on it, at least include a source so we can see some facts behind your view.

Why are people going to be inclined to read the views of someone that could be entirely fictitious?

C/2010 X1 Elenin is NOT on a hyperbolic orbit. The eccentricity stated in the JPL Small Bodies Database is with respect to the centre of the Sun. However, the centre of the Sun is NOT the centre of mass of the Solar System. The giant planets (particularly Jupiter) move the Sun back and forth as they orbit (up to 700,000 kms, or an entire solar radius). Extrapolating the orbit of C/2010 X1 Elenin backwards to a time before it entered the planetary region of the Solar System reveals that it's orbit was a very eccentric ellipse, with a period of over a million years.

For the record....NO INCOMING COMET HAS EVER BEEN CONFIRMED TO HAVE A HYPERBOLIC ORBIT. The only way that a known comet can be transferred to a hyperbolic orbit is by making a close approach to a giant planet. The best example of this would be C/1980 E1 Bowell. This comet passed 0.228AU from Jupiter on 1980 December 9, and was gravitationally accelerated to solar escape velocity. It is currently heading for the stars.
