I have often wondered about the "first light of wisdom" myself. The Sumerians were an advanced society with their writings, cities, etc. They were in the Middle East. Could it refer to Middle Eastern nations?

That makes sense to me. Of course, I don't know for sure, but I would say most probably that is what it refers to. Unless there is some other earlier civilization we don't know of yet.

That is possible, but extremely unlikely. Civilizations leave all sorts of evidence of their existence behind because they are a civilization.
