What is this thing?

I understand that.

But that doesn't mean that this little critter is a wolverine!

I'm thinking either a possum with a messed up tail, or a weird ferret.

I think its most likely an OPOSSUM (not a Possum, different animals)

Everything about it looks like an Opossum to me colour, tail, body shape, ears and location.

Also its defiantly not an otter as an otter is rather good in water and wouldn't be struggling like the animal in the video.

Yes this looks like a badger or wolverine and you are right they will rip you apart. I love the scene in The Gods Must Be Crazy where the poor man is chased across the desert by one.

I'm gonna go with mutated Giraffe...

I think it is a wet wolverine. The coloring is correct, as is the tail.

This is 100% a virginia opossum. I have an opossum called Smudge as a pet (wonderful creatures) and that is what this is. The tail is there, it's just hanging under the water a bit.

My vote is for nutria. They're all over parts of NJ now. Here

In the video you can see the long, slender, pointed nose. The front of his face is white and you can see the darker markings around his eyes. When he turns his head away from the camera you can see his floppy little ears. Dark grey body and you can see the long, hairless tail poking out of the water many times. Also walks like an opossum.

Looks like a possum. I have them around my house, so I've seen them up close.

Yeah Judging by this picture I think large Opossum. The tail in the OP's pic dosn't look bushy enough to be a wolverine IMO

But why would there be one of those walking around in that area?

Through most of the clip I was thinking possum. The curve of the lower jaw, the tail (wait, the tail was naked right? Not so sure.) And when the head was not in profile it just didn't look possum. I'm leaning with the badger folks.
