It sucks that the drug testing companies benefit so hugely from this law, but on the plus side, those 2% of drug users are getting an eye-opener on their addiction problem. Which could potentially save their lives from drug abuse.

Sick, sick, sick. This country lines the pockets of the rich off the backs of the poor. We have a supreme court ruling in favor of Walmart. When one of the S. C. justices has a son who is a partner on the firm of Walmart. lawyers. This goes on all the time. The Bushes made millons off Katrina refugees by donating computer programs to school children, but they could only buy certain programs that were sold by a Bush relative. This will continue to go on,until the American people get their heads out off the sand an start to see what is really going on around them. Scary...

Ummm, they still getting the benefits after failling the drug test. Read the law. They get to pick a family member or other 'designee' to receive the benifits on behalf of the children.

This is just a way to $3 mil off the backs of the poor.

Shameful.

If I was a Floridian I'd be livid that the governor had the audacity to try and line his pockets by making tax payers pay for invasive and fruitless drug testing.

If someone is on welfare and they are on drugs, they need treatment and guidance, not to be left with nowhere to turn.

But doesn't the article say that they saved $32,200-$48,200 based on the rejected welfare applicants, but they only owe $28,800-$43,200 to reimburse passing applicants?

So why do you say that the tax payers are having to pay? It sounds like they're pretty much busting even.

What they don't tell you is that Florida has so many crooked doctors that every citizen there can easily get hardcore drugs legally. They don't need welfare money for that and their prescription dismisses the result from tests.

His plan was solely to make himself rich. I can't believe Floridians stood by and let this happen.

Anyone getting a government check, salary, medicare, welfare... what ever, it comes ultimatly from the WORKING populous. They should all be tested for drugs! That will get rid of the drug problem right away.

This is the way I feel about it. Once you get in bed with the government, you get everything that comes with it. This isn't about drug testing those on welfare. This is government control of the people. For all of those out there that think the government should be taking care of those less fortunate, this is what you get out of it. The government can put any restriction they want on it. This is exactly why I'm against government welfare. The government has thrown some many monkey wrenches in the system, not because of imcompentance, but to make the majority dependent on them. Don't blame the State of Florida for this. Blame ourselves for letting this happen. Some blame can be put on those that are still asleep to all this. Those of us on here should carry most of the blame. We all know better yet all we do is raise hell on the internet and fight amongst ourselves. Black/white rich/poor democrat/republican teabagger/libtard. I'm going back to sleep. Wake me up when the revolution starts.

So, if mommy smokes pot then the kids can't eat?
If mommy drinks a gallon of whiskey daily, that's just fine.
Welfare is for the children despite the problems of the parents.
Yes, drugs are illegal and their should always be consequences of doing things that are illegal.
That being said, how do you punish the children of law-breaking parents?
What about theIllegal Aliens that get welfare in Florida?

Oh right, it's only 2% so they must be using something else!

The studies were done, people were told but no one listened.

Who gave you the right to judge people getting public assistance?

This is what disgusts me about ATS sometimes.

Congratulations though, Florida and ATS supporters of this law. You just made Rick Scott a bit more rich!

Why should I have to take a piss test to get a job, take a piss test to keep my job, & have my money taken from my check without my permission & given to some bum who doesn't have to take a piss test to get it?

The drug testing is moronic and the people who support this are utterly clueless

Okay, say I was on welfare, buying drugs with your money?

I can smoke crack or snort coke for a goddamn week, and in 72 hrs my urine would be clean of it.

So then I could take the test, and still buy drugs with your money.

These tests are only designed to catch marijuana smokers.

People who snort coke & smoke crack can't go 72 hours without it & still remember to go & get tested.

spoken like a person with no clue

Do you realize how many functioning drug addicts there are in this country?

Not everything about drugs and the people that abuse or are addicted to them happens like it does on TV.

Your doctor, lawyer, or broker could be on coke and you wouldn't have the slightest clue.

I'm going to squeeze into this discussion here, if I may. This interests me.
Did the Google search. Wasn't "logged on", just did an anon search from outside my Google account to keep any previously recorded results preferences from possibly interfering.

Good old Dictionary.com was one of the top results. Reference is for "socialism" even though I searched "socialist", as per your instructions. If there is some huge difference in the two that I'm not aware of, I apologize.

so·cial·ism
[soh-shuh-liz-uhm]

–noun
1.
a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
2.
procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
3.
(in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

World English Dictionary
socialism (ˈsəʊʃəˌlɪzəm)

— n
1. Compare capitalism an economic theory or system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned by the community collectively, usually through the state. It is characterized by production for use rather than profit, by equality of individual wealth, by the absence of competitive economic activity, and, usually, by government determination of investment, prices, and production levels
2. any of various social or political theories or movements in which the common welfare is to be achieved through the establishment of a socialist economic system
3. (in Leninist theory) a transitional stage after the proletarian revolution in the development of a society from capitalism to communism: characterized by the distribution of income according to work rather than need

Cultural Dictionary

socialism definition

An economic system in which the production and distribution of goods are controlled substantially by the government rather than by private enterprise, and in which cooperation rather than competition guides economic activity. There are many varieties of socialism. Some socialists tolerate capitalism, as long as the government maintains the dominant influence over the economy; others insist on an abolition of private enterprise. All communists are socialists, but not all socialists are communists.

Very good post. Rick Scott is a demon.

He passed on the high speed rail project that would have employed tens of thousands and benefited the lower and middle class and
yet he approves a BRAND New Marina to pollute the ocean, destroy the reef and give away more of the PEOPLES COASTLINE to his rich yachting friends.

It figures he would find a way to increase his companies profit or his fellows in the pharmaceutical business wealth with this rash and harsh move forward without forethought or planning. This is another disastrous result we can thank the Tea Stains for.

Though a good idea in theory, those drug tests are so easily falsified it is pathetic, an unconscionable waste of money and doomed from the start. What should be done is what was done to licenses after 9/11. We all had to bring in our case and reapply. And one person should not be responsible for making a determination on any case. This should be a panel, not necessarily a team but like a jury - many people saying yes this case is approved. And it should be done on a case by case basis.

With the exception of unemployment (which workers pay into and so should be able to reap benefits from as needed, with those benefits being commensurate with what they put in) - I don't think anyone should get assistance unless they are working or unable to work - and I am a liberal dem.

Whoever told you that the poor were paying for their own tests lied to you! The crook of a governor there in Florida established a Trust with which to draw from for the costs of the tests, this Trust is funded wirth TAXPAYER DOLLARS!. These tests are being paid for by the tax payers!!! Further, what about the children, are they part of the 2%. If a parent gets food stamps, and then fails the drug test, do the children go hungry? Or does the state only cut off the amount of food stamps for the adult? If the state only cuts off the amount for the adult, don't y'all realize the adult will just short the children as all food will be shared? Moving on, will the adults get a chance at rehab? Who is paying for the rehab? Who cares for the hungry children while the parents are in rehab? Drug addiction is a disease, just like alcoholism. How many times can an adult go to rehab? If the adult fails repeatedly, what happens to the children? I suppose the state will have to build orphanages to care for the children. WOW that is going to be expensive! So lets add it up!

The tax payers are paying for the initial testing, then the rehab for 1, 2, 3 times, then the court proceedings to take children away from their parents, the building of the orphanages, the salaries to staff the orphanages, the meals, clothes, healthcare (including psychological care for being taken from their parent), basic essentials of living for all the children while the parents are in rehab, and then again once taken away. THIS IS A FARCE PEOPLE! The Governor is the only one making money on this issue! Think about what is really being done! OUTRAGEOUS!

I agree with this. Most people know someone who would be willing to help them through a tight spot, long enough to get back on their feet. Right?
