I've been vegetarian for 10 years or so now but I respect other people's choice to eat meat. I used to have a strong stomach but when all the mad cow, foot and mouth, pig flu, bird flu, growth hormone news started appearing regularly I changed.

Recently I saw this documentary called Earthlings (technically all living beings on this planet are Earthlings, not just man) narrated by Joachim Phoenix and Persia White:

www.imdb.com...

WARNING! The documentary is a no holds-barred, hidden camera type affair but it shows the way we get our food. It is probably not suitable for children!

I got as far as 30 minutes into it and then the tears were just streaming down my face and I had to stop. Feelings of rage took over me and I really just wanted to try and put my fist through the monitor screen (which would only have hurt me). Or going and finding one of these companies and putting electric cattle prods to better use...

Thanks for posting. Cruelty is fairly endemic in the industry, I guess the people who work there develop some kind of mental block in order to actually do their 'job'.

I can't stop the world eating meat, I can reduce the damage by refusing to eat it myself though.

That's something I don't understand.

If you feel so bad that you change your lifestyle, did you ever thought of actually doing something against it? Talking to other people and organising some kind of protest, or petition, or whatever people can do where you live to try to make politicians doing something?

There are several factories in my locality who do this. The factory specialises in producing breeds of chickens which are prolific layers. As you can imagine, there are many chicks born and inensive records kept of their breeding and eggg production capability.
Basically, the chicks which are discarded are the males. The females are kept for egg production and records kept accordingly but the vast majority of males are surplus to requirements. When you think what life the hens are subjected to being kept in small cages for the whole of their lives, it makes one wonder which gender of chick has the hardest life!
The pain for the male chick is brief - the female suffers for her whole lifespan before she is 'despatched'.

I can see how you people might think this is bad, but there's some things that have to be sacrificed when feeding the number of people we have to feed as a nation every day. Back when my Grandfther was a kid, if you wanted a single chicken you had to catch one and twist it's head off with your bare hands. Or if you wanted beef or pork you slaughtered it yourself. So, taking the slaughter out of the hands of every day people and putting it behind closed doors really isn't that bad. Whether it's industrial or hand-done, its a disgusting job either way.

Regardless of all that though, I find people who make such a big deal about it to be insufferable. You go out and you spend extra money on products that arent supposed to harm animals (but likely do anyway, free range eggs my butt). You whine about these factories, but if they suddenyl went away, millions would starve. GET OVER IT.

We can't just stop eating people to decrease the demand. There is nothing we can do about the NWO. We are all slaves and expendable. We are their farm animals, and like the animals, we have no choice. This is the world of our masters.

We are here and other places. We reduce demand personally and, hopefully, by example. That is all we can do.

IM misinformed? Care to prove that instead of making some wild statement that I am wrong? Food supply is critical and if these places went down the tubes many places in the world would not get the food supply they need. period. You animal rights NUTJOBS are talking about taking down a huge part of our infrastructure in the food chain, and it isnt going to go well, not everyone is a fertilizer covered hippie with no job but their subsistence garden.

Though I agree with many of you who support the HUMANE treatment of farm animals, I just don't think anyone's concern for farm animals will ever be enough.

For the game to change, the way this affects people working in these hellholes, their spouses and children, must become just as well-known. Gail Eisnitz wrote "Slaughterhouse" about the meat industry, and took a unique angle in profiling the employees paid to skin the animals while alive, and how this affects them once they leave work and go home.

Turns out that funny thing called cognitive dissonance plays an important role in determining how violently that employee interacts with the outside world. I really believe that until one tortured employee turns the torture around and points it at hords of people, making national news and possibly bringing attention to the industry, nobody will care how this affects the people doing this work. Not until the bloody mess gets all over a whole bunch of people. And even then, it will be easier to portray the person as a troubled, disgruntled employee rather than a human being who became so frustrated by the violence while simultaneously becoming desensitized to it that with one precipitating event, they cracked and lost it.

I would have about three weeks inside those walls before deciding I'd rather die myself than go back there.

No one I see is interested in my opinion, certainly not regarding food. I can imagine the conversation

"Hey, do you know how they really make that meat and produce it?"

Random stranger "We need to eat meat to survive and be healthy and I like it, I don't care. Animals are put here for us to eat."

Or some such variation. People take it as an insult when you try and change their perceptions a lot of the time, especially when it involves a rather unsavoury subject. Rabbit's reaction is a good example of that. I'm a nutjob apparently. I also don't want to be on a soap-box my whole life. If I sense someone might be interested then obviously I will discuss my opinions and the reasons for them but at the end of the day the only person I truly control (debatable! LOL) is myself. I can honestly say that by MY not eating meat, I at least "save" the life of an animal or two each year.

Politicians are corrupt and follow the mainstream money and will never rock a boat. Why do you think that almost no meat production facility will allow cameras inside?

And regarding numbers, people, needs, please consider this little factoid.

If we gave every single person on this planet 3/4's of an acre of ground to live on and grow their own food, we would all fit into Australia and still leave a sizeable chunk over, not to mention all the other continents. Feel free to debunk

First let me say I will never be 100% vegetarian, but that this is horrendous!
When I was a kid I grew up on a small farm. We had 2 horses, 1 cow, 1 goat, several cats, couple of dogs and loads of chickens and large victory garden. We ate what we grew from our garden but would also eat the produce from our animals too. We drank milk from our cow and sometimes from the goat and made cheese too! We ate loads of eggs and would on occasion kill a chicken when we had too many. Each year we would also get one grass calf to support our meat needs which was taken to a local butcher and killed humanely. These animals all lived better than they would in wild and were cared for. There were a few winters when I took care of them that I felt they were doing better than me freezing my butt off! LOL

My parents sold their land to make room for a huge subdivision to let more people live out in what was once lovely country side...

Anyway I live in a city now and I am considering going back to some old ways like getting some chickens and a coop. We eat from a garden and I don’t eat red meat so that is not a problem. This is the only way to prevent some of this cruelty is to take back the ways of making our own food.

You know, I used to think along the same lines as most here. That the way these animals were butchered for food was terrible, there was too much pain and fear, etc.

But then, I paid attention to the world around me. Can you imagine the fear and pain of an antelope being taken down by a crocodile? We're animals just the same.

ok, just to clear up my position on this issue.
i do not think cruelty to animals is acceptable, but in regards to this vid there a few points to be made...

1. this is a youtube video made by an animal rights group with an agenda (not a reliable source)

2. if the voice over was saying something different, people would veiw the video in a different way.

3. even if this video is accurate for this particular hatchery does not mean it is accurate for all the hatcheries.

4. videos like this will never stop people eating meat even if the info was 100% true. it might make them find a more humane way of getting the meat, but it wont stop them eating it because we are omnivores, our ancesters were omnivores and nothing will change that.

we are not too different from lions and other carnivores
they use what god gave em (as an athiest thats just a figure of speach) ie claws and teeth, and we use what god gave us ie intelligence, which we use to build machines and feed the masses.

death is a natural thing and so is eating meat, and if anyone thinks a youtube vid is gunna change that then theyve been smoking too much of the good stuff

Maybe with a different approach and/or a different target audience instead of random strangers.

For example, I don't know what the people that posted on this thread think about the Bible, but those that believe in it supposedly believe that the animals were put on this planet for our use, but in that case atheists (like me) cannot use that "defence". They may say that we need to eat meat to survive and be healthy, but then you can answer that methods like this are not only needlessly bad for the animals, that reflects on the quality of the meat and the processes they must use to compensate for the mechanised killing methods, and those processes add another point of entry of disease in the food chain.

For example, if those chickens are being made into paste to use on sausages, then the way they are doing it has many possible ways of passing some bacteria from the animal to the meat, while in a slower but more humane and clean method would give better and healthier meat.

Politicians are corrupt and follow the mainstream money and will never rock a boat. Why do you think that almost no meat production facility will allow cameras inside?
Doesn't the people have a way of making themselves heard? In Portugal and in the EU we can make petitions for things to be discussed in the Portuguese or the EU parliament, we only need enough signatures and a clear demand.

And regarding numbers, people, needs, please consider this little factoid.

I think those numbers are wrong (as those in most factoids).

As I am used to the metric system, I had to convert acres to square metres, and that gives me 4,050 square metres for each acre, so 3/4 of an acre would be something like 3,037.5 square metres. According to the US Census Bureau, the world population is estimated to be 6,940,000,000 people (I wrote the whole number because billions mean different things on different countries
), while Australia has a total area of 7,617,930 km2, so dividing those by the world population would give 0.001097 km2 (or 1,097 square metres), only 36% of the above mentioned 3/4 of an acre.

But I may be wrong.
