A 527 is defined as follows:

Political Committees formed for the purpose of influencing elections but not supporting or opposing specific candidates.

This definition seems to be a bit of an oxymoron. If the goal is to influence an election, but not show support for a specific candidate, OR opposition to a specific candidate, then it would seem that their only goal would be to discuss the issues.

I have yet to see a commercial from MoveOn, or ACT or anyone else for that matter that has been capable of staying on the topic of a campaign issue with out taking a shot at a candidate.

Additionally they are not to be directed by a specific campaign, and may only spend money to influence elections generally, but not the election of specific candidates.

So where are they getting there direction from? IF a specific 527 is using the exact talking points of one campaign or the other, is that to be considered as taking direction from that party?

Really all these groups have become is an even softer, slushier source of mudslinging and negative campaigning. It just makes me sick.
