I saw one skipping across the atmosphere on the peak night of the Perseids. Love it when they do that.

I agree, most likely it is space junk.

And you were right it does pollute the atmosphere. There are many toxic materials involved in satellite manufacture.

The speed at which a meteorite enters the atmosphere varies. By the time the object hits the ground it probably slows down to 250 miles per hour. Pieces hit the ground all of the time although most of the pieces are dust size.
