The fact that the U.S. spends so much money on their military and so little on renewable energy tells you they are looking out for the best interests
of the military-industrial-complex, the fossil fuel lobby, and all the related industries that have their hands deep in the pockets of U.S.
politics.
These are the industries that run the world today by keeping it completely dependent on finite, non-renewable resources like oil that they control.
Meanwhile these are the same industries that have been working so hard to convince everyone that climate change
isn't real, and that it isn't
caused by us. See:

Disinformation Campaign on Global Warming Science

(2011 Update)
The Denial Machine
So put two and two together and realize this is exactly why you
should make the effort to support the "green dream", as you call it.
You DON'T pay carbon taxes if you don't use carbon. A carbon tax simply makes the price of renewable energy competetive with fossil fuels. This
means many more people will naturally start switching to renewables, which will drive the price down even further, since the biggest "cost" holding
it back at the moment is a lack of infrastructure and mass-production.
In the long run "the green dream" is also actually much cheaper and healthier anyway, so "making the sacrifice" to support renewable energy is
really like making the sacrifice to stop smoking, eat right, exercise more, get a good education, etc.
All these things are well worth it - and of course TPTB don't support them, because they would much rather keep everyone addicted, fat, lazy and
stupid instead - even if it sends the whole planet straight to hell in the meantime.
