The replies on this posting reminds me of the political retoric I often heard before the signing of the Civil Rights Bill in the 1960's.

The northern Republicans would rant and rave at the hardheaded stubborness of the southern Democrates. They would decry how these "darnd" conservatives were holding the country back from any type of progress at all.

After the bill was passed and almost all the southern states suddenly became Republican, they were the conservatives and the Democrates became the progressives.

If you have any doubt as to what I am saying, just take a little time to look at the changes in the votes cast by each states parties. It was not instantanious, but it was pretty quick.

I could tell you the reasons, but I will save that for the truely interested.

Here we go again. My daddy is smarter than your daddy crap. I have a 13 year old son with an IQ of 172. Actually his IQ is broken down in three categories or measurements. Then an average was derived. The average was 172.

8 years ago I was somewhat intimidated. I thought by the time he was 16 or so he would be so far advanced that I would feel very inadequate. Instead, my 13 year old boy can tell me the tinsel strength of his shoe laces but cannot tie his shoes. He is incapable of maintaining and friend ships because of his inability to interact socially. He has the tendency to be a Narcissistic jerk much like the individual that did this article in Psychology Today and the person that was dumb enough to post this to ATS.

Furthermore my 13 year old is lazy and refuses to do any work and is will to inflict personal injury on himself and others to manipulate a situation into his favor. Much like the majority of idiot liberals I see in Washington. Also, this may account for the reason that so many liberals seem to be on disability, government housing, welfare and food stamps. Let be truthful these are the people that liberals go out of their way to exploit and throw into the face of conservatives or less intelligent people.

In closing I am so happy that I am less intelligent, with a job, and that I have the ability to make a comfortable living. I guess if I had been a liberal I could have become an Engineer to design buildings and bridges. Instead I hire Engineers to design the buildings and bridges that I own.

Love the illustration Bandit.

This thread, combined with the other new one about Conservatives giving more than liberals...

Honestly, I wish all these people were on some other site. They wonder what's wrong with America, why there are no solutions - one only need read through the threads like this one and see the two "sides" actually spend all their energy on.. labeling and stereotyping themselves and each other.

However, nobody has actually addressed the argument at hand, and refuted the subject intelligently. He who cant win an agrument, attacks the source.

Let's DEBATE the subject, not trash the (obviously) questionable source.

Debate the subject? Well let's have a look at the subject that you posted:

"Why Liberals Are More Intelligent Than Conservatives" - Psychology Today Magazine

So you now admit that the author is a "total twit" and that the source is "obviously questionable". What's left to debate? You posted a link to a piece-of-trash article by some fringe loon that has been discredited by his own profession. There's nothing to debate, because the subject was based on information that has now been proven to be faulty. You've already agreed to discard the article you posted as nonsense, so now the burden of proof is back on you that the statement "liberals are more intelligent than conservatives" is factual. Present your evidence and we can have a debate.

10 IQ points on average isn't much. I have an official IQ of 169, and on most issues I take a more 'liberal' stance.
The conservatives also probably have many with exceptionally high IQs, it's just an average.

In America, Conservative practically means 'christian'. Another statistic is that the more intelligent and educated people become, the less likely they are to be religious.(Compare the rate of christian scientists to the overall christian population).

So when a large chunk(probably the majority) of the conservatives, comes from a demographic that is statistically less intelligent, that's probably a big factor.

~
I mean no disrespect to conservative, or christians by this. It's just statistics. The average intelligence in either group, is halfway just an ad hominum. Say's nothing about your personal intelligence levels.

~
I'd be curious to see the average IQ of ATS, and compare to those. Or even an ATS split of conservatives and liberals.

This whole topic boils down to this:

a) Liberals believe that reading a text-book provides them with knowledge that far exceeds experience. I have seen first hand a college graduate come in to an office and state (no lie) that he is better than everyone else that has been working there for years (he wasn't).

b) This is why in socialist and communist countries there is an immense focus on graduate degrees over experience.

c) This is why the United States had run circles around socialist and communist countries for such a long time because we valued experience over text-book learning.

A person doing actual real world work for 20 years was seen as more qualified as someone a day out of college. In much of the rest of the world that isn't the case - a person with 3 graduate degrees can eclipse someone with 2 graduate degrees and 10 years of experience and it doesn't matter what the degrees are in. It is the 'apparent intelligence' that trumps ability.

Those who can do, those who can't teach. Those who can't do that either run for elected office.

I actually disagree with the constructed college system, and am already manually doing work in the fields I have a potential to end up having a career with, even though I'm not yet out of high school. I will not being going to college, and will hate when potential employers judge me more by my lack of degree than my experienced list of skills and past jobs. Though I do support strong funding of the high school education system, since everyone should at the very least get the most they can out of that.

Books > Experience isn't a liberal selling point. Maybe a side tendency, but nothing more. And the article was going by IQ, which doesn't have to do with books or experience(either can increase brain power to boost IQ). So I don't see how that's what this topic "Boils down to".

I loved the last paragraph, which I have posted here for you all to see. There are too many whiny ATS'ers that bitch and moan about the evil 'Liberal Media'. It doesn't surprise me, it's because that media force you're complaining about is smarter than you, and it doesn't sit well.

The funny thing about conservatives whining about the 'liberal media' is that there is no such thing. Historically the media leans center-right.

What they actually mean is the media isn't kowtowing to conservatives and going out of their way to make them look good.

One example that comes to mind is the Sarah Palin interview with Katie Couric. Palin did an excellent job of making herself look like a moron, Couric didn't have to do anything. Conservatives still cried about Couric and the liberal media as if she asked unfair questions about Palin's reading habits, supreme court decisions that she doesn't agree with, and her foreign policy experience. What happened is Palin didn't get the questions beforehand the way she does on fox news.

Reality has a well known liberal bias.

liberal:define: broad-minded: tolerant of different views and standards of behavior in others
progressive politically or socially: favoring gradual reform, especially political reforms that extend democracy, distribute wealth more evenly, and protect the personal freedom of the individual.

conservative:define: reluctant to accept change: in favor of preserving the status quo and traditional values and customs, and against abrupt change

Draw your own conclusion.

Having an Evolutionary Psychologist judge what political systems have more merit is like having a fundamentalist Christian judge which Religion has the most merit. You couldnt have chosen a more biased source to "prove" your point.

edit on 24-8-2011 by Skyfloating because: (no reason given)

That was a pitifully false analogy. The evolutionary psychologist came to his conclusions through a series of studies and experiments and his work is also subjected to peer review. It has nothing to do with his particular ideology nor did he say which ideology has the most merits, simply that liberals tend to be more intelligent.

There was also a study about conservatives being driven by fear because they have larger amygdalas and liberals had more gray matter in the anterior cingulate cortex that helps them deal with complexity.

It looks like the study struck a nerve with you and others. The great thing about it is, if you don't agree with it than go out disprove the study and subject that to peer review. Don't just whine and cry about a study that resulted in conclusions unfavorable to conservatives.

Another thing, it doesn't mean that all conservatives are stupid and all liberals are intelligent. I have met some really dumb people on both sides of the spectrum. However, the conservatives don't seem to have any more William F. Buckleys and it appears that much of the anti-science and anti-intellectualism comes from the right nowadays.

I'm not going to take a stance on this but one has to wonder why Universities across the nation (student and faculty) tend to be much more liberal. Correlation between higher education and liberalism? Dunno, but it doesn't help the conservatives in this thread I don't think

So you decided to join and play the divide and conquer game. Right now the Progressive mantra is to use any means possible to drive wedges between people for the purpose of controlling and manipulating them. You are helping them to do just that.

Lets start with what people who do this are by definition -

Bigotry Defined -

A bigot is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices, especially one exhibiting intolerance, and animosity toward those of differing beliefs. The predominant usage in modern English refers to persons hostile to those of differing sex, race, ethnicity, religion or spirituality, nationality, inter-regional prejudice, gender and sexual orientation, homelessness, various medical disorders particularly behavioral disorders and addictive disorders. Forms of bigotry may have a related ideology or world views.

The tactic so willingly embraced by a tiny minority, the true Progressives who have taken over the Democratic Party is in fact Bigotry with a capital "B". It is primarily targeted and ironically so in this case, at the most illiterate and least informed among us. We see often when true Progressives while speaking to their own and forgetting the cameras are on, often slip up and reveal the fact that they consider themselves superior to everyone not one of them. A tactic used very effectively by such wonderful people as Stalin, Mao and Hitler who were also Progressives.

This ideology is in part based on a mental defect with many names like "grandiosity", "delusions of grandeur" among others.

Lets look at the attempt to divide and conquer undertaken by Progressives and their operatives over the last few days directed at Conservatively minded people. If you pay attention to the news it is out of control right now coming from the Progressives. It basically screams that they are willing to cheat, or even damage the country to maintain power. They know it works on the illiterates and uninformed people they rely on for votes.

I'm an Independent and I'm deeply offended by this tactic being used to try and get my vote. It means they actually think everyone but them is stupid and you flat out state it here in this post.

If you want to get down to brass tacks here, the Independents by definition are the smartest voters. People who blindly follow Ideologies, Party Platforms and accept facts blindly without knowing if they are true are in fact not to bright. One need only ask a few questions of most Progressives to find out they simply parrot what they are told to say as you are doing here.

I feel comfortable posting these thoughts as this thread is in fact the thread of a Troll who is not here to debate issues, but in fact is only here to insult and divide because you are told to do so by dishonest leaders with no integrity and total disregard for decency and honesty in their public discourse.

Keep it up though. This divide and conquer tactic is working backwards for you. The more you do this, the less support you will have. The only real question here is what the heck is wrong with the Democrats that you have not ran anyone against this ideological jerk in the White House that is tearing the country apart and only cares about keeping power? I count many Democrats among my freinds and they don't want Obama either. It seems the Party is out of synch with its own members.

Once the Alinsky / Ayers Progressives got control they stopped caring about the Democrats and care only about what trickery they can use to keep power. I see this as more of a Coup of sorts. Had the Democrats actually know what they were electing, I doubt Obama would have won the Primary. Now he has so much power they are afraid to run anyone against him because, even the Democrats know they will be labeled Racists or Terrorists if they don't march in lock step.

Now I'm a real Independent who leans right on economics and government and left on social issues. I think we are the true majority in the US. So lets compare here for fun.

Obama's IQ is proudly touted as being 124. My school transcripts listed mine at 148. So why am I so Conservative? Why if Obama's is so high, does he ignore history and repeat the same mistakes made in the past by other Progressives?

Two reasons for Obama I think.

The arrogance to believe the reason these ideas have never worked is because he was not in charge. The other being his real intention is to create a State comparable to those that came from Mao, Hitler and Stalin and eliminate Freedom as we know it. He of course cannot say that publicly, but when in conference with others who follow the "Rules For Radicals", I'd imagine they freely speak of when they take control and topple Democracy. Ironic is it not this is coming from a Party named Democrats but ruled over by people who don't like Democracy. That's the only humor I find in this.

Congratulations for helping them to divide this country and do it harm. You are doing a bang-up job.

It is insulting to everyone here that you think we don't know a political troll when we see one.

The key word here is "on average". Without doubt, there are many extremely intelligent conservatives; their intelligence average ends up being leveled out thanks to the conservatives types like the ones who watch Fox News religiously- literally.

I think in general liberals are more intelligent because universities tend to promote liberal agendas. Most intelligent people end up going on to post-secondary where they learn about the potentials of progressive liberalism- especially in the liberal arts.

I myself am currently studying liberal arts, and when I step back and think of the instruction and ideals that are presented to me, they are without doubt slanted to the left.

Psychology Today is a rag, they sold out decades ago, well at least, two anyway.

And IQ was tossed out the window over a decade ago, who even talks about that any more. If they do, they are a charlatan.

The use of the title "evolutionary psychologist" is straight our of Monty Python. Not a wonder he was fired, but, "Psychology Today" hired him, so you have to consider the source and love the irony at the same time.

The large brush across the canvass of humanity is precisely why we are getting flushed down the toilet. The human story reduced to Cliff notes.

No one can be categorized as this or that, every soul ever born on this earth, was born here for a reason, unique in every way for a purpose and we suffer a devastating loss, whether seen or unseen when we loose them without their purpose realized.

OP...do not know what to say, perhaps it was your purpose to get us back to grateful...grateful for each other. Left, right, libertarian, independent, woman, man, child, brother, sister, friend, son, daughter, neighbor, countryman...you get the point.

But an assertion that one is smarter than another based on political beliefs...

...our brains have just left the building.
