So far USGS is showing a 2.8 aftershock in the exact same spot.

Hopefully the Washington Monument can handle a few more little rumblings today...?

Is the washington Monument that special? I just hope the people get away injury free, i can careless about some stupid monument.. Sorry not trying to be mean, just some of these posts that im seeing on here are kinda ignorant.. lol

Nope, the monument doesn't mean a damn thing to me since I'm not American.

However, it may mean something to some of the Americans living in the area... or if they happen to be standing beside it taking a picture.

But if it's tilted now, as is being reported, a few tiny rumblings of aftershocks could do more damage.

The last thing the US needs right now is to have to spend money re-erecting their phallic symbol.

I am in coastal Virginia. Hampton/Norfolk area. We felt it here. Epicenter just west and a little north of Richmond.
This is my first EQ.
Everyone at work has been talking about the hurricane taking aim for our area. Next thing we know the place starts shaking. Nothing like an earthquake to take your attention off a major hurricane.
Just before the quake the radio played The Earth Moved Under My Feet. I said if Bad Moon Rising comes on next I am headed for the hills. LOL.

FNC reports Washington Monument may be tilting from quake jolt

I would be curious to see how much it is leaning if at all.

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly reported at 2:30 pm that their bureau received information from a producer saying that a Captiol Hill Police officer says that the Washington Monument may actually be tilting as a result of the earthquake.

Seismologist John Rundle joined Kelly on her show and confirmed that the Washington Monument could very well be tilting as a result of the earthquake and the structure should be checked out.

Other damage too:

Quake damages National Cathedral, Ecuador embassy

The Washington National Cathedral, the highest building in the city, suffered damage in Tuesday's earthquake, with three pinnacles in the central tower breaking off, a spokesman said.

Richard Weinberg, director of communications at the Episcopal cathedral, said a fourth pinnacle was leaning and might also be damaged. The building's central tower, which is 30 stories high, also suffered minor structural damage.

Other damage reported from the earthquake occurred at the Ecuador Embassy, a recorded message by the DC Fire and EMS agency said.

Remember..these buildings on the east coast aren't build to the same standards the ones in more earthquake prone areas are. So less powerful could still mean decent damage. Quakes don't have to be 8.0 to cause major issues.

Do any of you know how to find out if HAARP has been in use today,or recently? I've exhasuted myself searching here, and I'd like to see if others of you think there may be a connection with the weather/quakes going on over the past few hours..

Thank you,in advance, for your help and patience.

IF it was an earthquake machine, one would assume it would be coming from other countries that may have these machines ie (Japan, Russia)??would there be a way to track their operations?

Probably old news now but right on top of the epicenter is an active nuclear power plant.. maps.google.com...,-89.868164&spn=27.836101,40.78125&z=5&vp6
Units: 2/2
Worst Case Casualties: 35,800

That was from a list compiled in 2001, so worst case casualties are probably much higher now. Not that I think we have anything to worry about just yet, its not nearly as bad as Japan for sure.

I didn't feel a thing either in Cleveland.

Unless they were in a upper story building downtown, no one I know felt either.

Fredericksburg, VA here - only about 20 minute drive from the epicenter.

I was in the gym at the time and all the equipment was shaking. The noise was so loud!

It was such a short duration though that when it was over I walked out of the gym expecting a gas main explosion or something.

Those Louisa nuke plants make me nervous - my house is in the direct path of any fallout that would come from an accident there.

Thats another thing. All the land lines are working ok but the cell service is come and go. One minute you can make a call the next you just get busy signals. How do EQ's effect cell phones? I am in Virginia about 150 miles from the epicenter.

Oddly, in terms of the whole secret society side of things, who control the world and who has pointy megaliths. It IS actually pretty important. I would not take it as a good omen if something out of control happened to it.
On the bright side, it has rather recently been put through upgrade/renewal. They can scaffold again if they have to.

Cause I'm guessing everyone and their brother, mother, second cousin 3 times removed and 4 friends are all calling each other to ask if they felt it!

5.8 is pretty big for this region of the states. We get the occasional 3.1 here but no big shakes. Not ones that are felt up and down the east coast.

I just wanted to add something to the pot just for fun. A thought passed through my mind that the government seen the track of Irene used HAARP to try and deflect it, and it caused an EQ in a area that many have never felt an EQ before.

Just wanted to share a thought caused from reading this site too much.

Friend of mine was on her couch in Rocky River, on the second floor of a duplex, and felt the shaking.
