I wasted a fair amount of time on this initially. Was fun for a while.

It's nothing but a thought experiment. I've conducted smaller scale ones with friends before. Theres a picture on the site that shows the schrodingers cat experiment. The general idea that arises from the experiment is that by making the observation you have potentially changed the possible outcome.
