A Dutch journalist is calling for a mountain in Holland.... The mountain would be a mile high and cater to hikers, skiers, climbers and anyone else that fancies a change from the flat surroundings.

According to Zonneveld, engineers, construction firms, investors and experts are already busy discussing the feasibility of a man-made mountain that would include ski slopes, bobsleigh tracks, an ice rink, hiking trails, cliffs for climbing and scenic mountain roads with hairpin turns

While beautiful its seems that the flatness is just not good for sports (mountain climbing in particular)

Strange but interesting and I really want them to do it!

From mole hills to mountains eh? Sounds like a great innovative idea. I wonder how the locals feel about it? Your link is not working...

peace,

That sounds amazing. Maybe it could be considered one of the modern wonders of the world if it actually gets built.

Well it'll keep some people busy and be a nice bit of evidence for the future people that 'we were here'.

Another stupid way to waste money.

Or invest money, as they seem to imply. "Include ski slopes, bobsleigh tracks, an ice rink, hiking trails, cliffs for climbing" Maybe this will generate money and create jobs. Maybe the dirt will come form existing or future construction projects, maybe they will create a new lake, win win.
I know, lot's of maybes, but I would not chalk it up to just a waste, yet anyways.

peace

May be a waste of money, but, money will get wasted anyways. At least the Dutch will have a kick ass mountain to show for it, whereas other countries can't show nada for a trillion.

Love the idea.

and as a Dutchguy from the south I like to say

It appears the north is a little jealous of our terrain?

Hmm

On topic it will be really cool to have and I hope they will start very soon.

well holland needs something to brighten the place up ,
i lived there for a year and i found it to be the most boring country that i have ever lived in .
all the villages and towns seem to be clones of eachother .
has anyone considered just what effect all the weight would have on a land that is reclaimed sea bed.

As a person of Dutch decent, I say, if there are any engineers capable of doing it well, it certainly is Holland's.

Dig a hole a mile deep, use the dirt to make a mile high mountain, and vupti...You got 2 miles of skislope.
In the summer time you can fill the hole with water, and you have a nice lake for waterskiing and stuff...

This idea have been mentioned a lot of times in Denmark to, and still is.
I think it's a bit stupid, to many flaws

Well, maybe it will be useful if a 2012 mega tsunami hits Netherlands.

I really hope this happens. I would definitely book a trip and visit.
I have always wanted to go to Holland to get high.

(I can hear the groans from here!)

Those crazy Dutch, just trying to find another way to get high.

I don't like this, seems a shame to disturb the beauty of 'the Low Countries' especially when there are mountains nearby and ease of travel throughout Europe enables this.

When you consider how much of the Netherlands is man-made (much of Zeeland and all of Flevoland Province, for example), then if anyone ought to be able to pull this off, it's the dutch.

After all, right here in England we have man-made hills going back to the stone age, so with today's technology it should be a doddle.

I wonder where is gonna be the mile deep hole located.

In Belgium, of course.

It will be dug by French and German contractors.

Americans may or may not understand this.
