Well what can I say, I really didn't want to make another "we have a quake swarm sort of" thread...but there seems to be some activity happening in the West Highlands of Scotland since around 8am Sunday 21st Aug.

Here is a link to my post's in the Quake Watch Thread .

Felt Lochailort, Glenfinnan and Acharacle. Reports described "there was a bang, then a rumblng, almost like a distant explosion", "rumble lasted for two or three seconds with a distinct thump" and "it was the loudest and most severe we've witnessed since living here but thankfully the shortest".....

Here is a link to The BBC News article

The BGS said earthquakes were a common event in the west Highlands but added that to have four on the same day was "slightly unusual".

A spokesman said small earthquakes were more noticeable in quiet places and at a quiet time, such as a Sunday morning.

The most recent recorded quake in the area was on 30 July in Knoydart.

Well that's my SHTF safe zone up in smoke, fantastic. Isn't that entire area supposed to be dormant?

Im from Christchurch New Zealand.

We weren't supposed to get quakes.

We did.

Don't be scared, be prepared. It is actually six months to the date that we had our second major quake (22nd of Feb). You have to remember, currently the world is going under a fair bit of stress. The atlantic ridge has had a few fives and fours over the past weeks and this simple could be pressure moving through so to speak. I doubt you have anything to fear though.

Stay safe! Best Wishes.

Oh no, that is an active area, along with Mull. Argyll AND Bute, and there was activity earlier this year - 2 quakes in April. In 1986 Oban had a 4.1, and not that far away but the other side of the 'big crack' the largest of all recorded Scottish earthquakes - a 5.2 - occurred in 1880.

Historic British Earthquakes - has the 1880. Go to the link and then look in Additional Information. This also references the 1986 Oban quake which you will fing in Significant British Earthquakes

I believe the reference to a 1976 Oban quake is an error and should be 1986.

I think geologists link Scotland's seismic activity largely to isostatic or post-glacial rebound... there are of course eroded magma chambers in the Cairngorns and elsewhere which were probably volcanically active during the Devonian and earlier.

Interesting, thanks guys. I think I just took it for granted. Plenty of food for thought.

Thanks for the info PM

I did find a few articles on the BBC news site in regards to past quakes. Here are a couple:

An earthquake in the Highlands was the latest in a series to be recorded across Scotland since the start of 2011, according to official data.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the 3.5-magnitude quake struck in Glenuig, 25 miles (40km) west of Fort William at about 0600 GMT on Sunday.

People in Inverness, Skye and Oban reported feeling tremors.

BGS previously recorded events near Applecross, Dingwall, Dumfries and on Islay during this month..... continued

People in Inverness, Skye and Oban, reported feeling tremors, which were experienced across the west Highlands.

The BGS said such an earthquake might be felt up to 120km (74 miles) away but was unlikely to cause much damage.......continued.

I would also like to add that I have been very headachy the past few days. Almost like a migraine.

Thought I was onto something until I went & checked the antipodes map! Thought sure Vanuatu had something to do with it! But it came back south of NZ! Well, actually, that isn't that far off, if you're throwing a dart from half a world away!

It would be interesting to go back & see what else was going on in the world at the times of the other past quakes!

You are the second person who has mentioned the antipodes in relation to earthquakes in the past couple of days. So what is the theory? How is this supposed to work?

Yes I would also like to know the theory behind this antipodes thingy

I'm not sure, I'm new to all this. Someone not too long ago had a link to the antipodes map site. It piqued my interest! Equal (not quite), & opposite reactions?(Well, not really!) Or like when you throw a rock in a small pond. If it's a big enough rock, & you can throw it with enough force, the ripples reach the bank & reverberate back some!

Or when someone gets a head injury. The brain damage usually isn't behind the point of impact. It's where the brain bounces off of the inside of the skull opposite the impact point! Not that I'm comparing brain matter to the earth's innards!!! Or saying that the waves travel through the earth's core instead of rippling across the crust! Just wondering out loud!

I've seen the quake maps of the waves spreading out across the globe. Do they build or diminish the further they go? Is there something about one traveling 180 degrees? Or is it just a fun coincidence that the couple of times that I've tried it, it came pretty close? Hmmm? The quake saga continues.....

Right let's start again, as I did this hole post earlier today and then ATS got wobbly knee's

So there was another small quake in the Scottish Highlands today (19th) Not in the Lochailort area, but 21.40miles SouthEast in Ballachulish.

BGS have received several reports from residents of Ballachulish and Glencoe of an event today (29 August 2011) at 11:08 BST. Reports described "felt like thunder" and "rumble lasted for no more than a couple of secounds".
Credit to BGS

I find the felt reports very interesting. Felt like thunder
......isn't that what a sonic boom is like???

Also I did do a quick map put together via Google Earth. Just to get an idea of the locations of the quakes......but ATS is still poorly so I will upload it to my thread when all is back to normal

A friend in Ballachullish heard the quake there yesterday.

I missed the ones in Lochailort as I'm living down in Evesham these days. Hope they didn't frighten the mice at Essan though

A bigger one hit Glenuig back in January
