Atheists, Muslims More Popular Than Tea Party

Alternet

The results of a comprehensive New York Times polling project (document link here) offer some good news to that end. The results show that public opinion is trending away from Tea. They also dispel some big myths about the Tea Party being economic in nature rather than what it actually is: a re-branded, repurposed version of the same old Christian Right. This may seem familiar to AlterNet readers--but still, it's good to have the numbers and the mainstream attention to highlight such a crucial truth.

Here's the juiciest nugget from professors David E. Campbell and Robert D. Putnam in the Times, one which encapsulates the Tea Party's growing unpopularity with a vivid comparison or two (emphases mine):

Of course, politicians of all stripes are not faring well among the public these days. But in data we have recently collected, the Tea Party ranks lower than any of the 23 other groups we asked about — lower than both Republicans and Democrats. It is even less popular than much maligned groups like “atheists” and “Muslims.” Interestingly, one group that approaches it in unpopularity is the Christian Right. Alex Seitz-Wald at Think Progress, highlighting the above results, also notes that these unpopularity numbers for the Tea Party have skyrocketed over the past year or so.

I consider myself a Christian but definitely not part of the so-called "religious right." I cannot see Jesus as some kind of "doctrinal police" who sends all dissenters and questioners to hell to roast forever in a pit of fire. Why would God create us to think for ourselves and then punish us for doing exactly what we have been created to do? I believe the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost appreciate those who question the human condition and devote their minds and their lives to what they believe will further the welfare of this planet and those who live on it.

Because of our doctrinal disputes we are trying to crush each other and solve our difference by force and coercion. What we really want is to lay down our "second amendment remedies" and come to the table with honesty and a true desire to hear one another and act with integrity and good will toward one another. That, I believe, will be a test of our true spirituality.

The tea party is hated because it is an anti-human one-note party--lower taxes for the rich!. The world wide economy is going down because of the actions of the people who the tea party coddles and supports that doesn’t give a dam about real human beings and their suffering.

They are obsessed with something THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH RELIEVING THAT SUFFERING and in-fact adds to it therefore the people understand their lack of intelligence and dangerousness.

you really need to get over it. there are many on the left who have faith and identify with the word Christian. the problem with the right is you guys think you own it and know it all. that's bunk. if you think about it, really think about it, it's us on the left who want and try our best to look out for our fellow human beings. we are selfless. you on the right have cornered selfishness; as a matter of fact you have bought it to a whole new level. it's too bad we can't ask Christ himself who He would choose to align himself with. my guess is He'd be a lefty.

This would be one of the few times that Jesus lost his temper, as he slapped you across the ear for asking such an asinine question.

"FOOL!! Dost thou not remember my teachings that all men are not my children?? How could I love one more than the other? Send me thy worst sinner so that I may hold him close to my breast".

Your thread title is so ridiculous as to be absurd. How did you ever deduce that moslems and atheists are more popular than TPM members from that stupid 'poll'.

Ask yourself --- no, never mind. You wouldn't understand.

Your thread and your source and your post are childish and comical. What are you trying to say here?

ATS is rapidly disintegrating into a parody of life.:shk: They should marry up with The Onion.

I debated even commenting on this thread. I felt, though, that if this is an accurate indicator, then the MSM and progressive left/right is doing a wonderful job of "defining" the Tea Party.
Domestic terrorists, destroyers of the country, responsible for the economic failures; all have been spoken/written/shouted by those that fight for an entitlement/socialist government.

The only benefit though, is that our detractors have identified themselves. The true haters, bigots, anti-Constitutionalists have labeled themselves through their actions, words, and deeds.

You may not be aware of this, but it is an ATS requirement that we use the exact title of an article or other text that we are quoting. I personally would not have chosen that one, but it is protocol.

I am much more interested in the ideas which are presented in the text and how readers respond to them. Reason, I think, is more effective than mud slinging.

I believe that protocol applies to the BAN forum only. Please feel free to research it. The title used here is highly inflammatory and incorrect. imo. The source article provides no such info to support the title.

Also, the source article is actually the NYT, not Alternet. Alternet only provided an opinion on the poll results.

ETA; I didn't intend to insult you, if I did. It's just that the thread title was so inflammatory that I shot from the hip.

As soon as I saw "New York Times"... this thread lost credibility.

Let the race-baiters hate.... the TEA Party is here to stay!
