I'm pretty sure in socialism people would still have to repair ovens. And some people would still want to save time.

Workers baked alive in bread factory horror

www.dailymail.co.uk

Two bakery workers died in agony after bosses sent them into a giant oven to carry out repairs on the cheap, a court heard yesterday.

The machine should have been allowed to cool for 12 hours, but was only left for two.

David Mayes and Ian Erickson were unaware of the full danger as they crawled into the oven because fans had cooled its outer reaches to 40c. Its core, however, was still at 100c.

The repair was a delicate procedure in which they had to collect broken parts from along the length of a conveyor belt which carries bread trays slowly through the 75ft-long oven

And this is why I believe the government "safety standards" do nothing to make a job any safer. The real safety threat is a boss that doesn't give a crap about safety and only about money and profits and quoatas. "safety standards" are a joke, after that fukushima ceasium cloud passed over and it's dust settled all over everything, news papers would have made excellent dust magnets because of their large surface area. That dust then gets concentrated into bags of news paper that is to be recycled. That recycled material goes to my fiancee's work where it is breathed in. My fiancee asked for a breather with a face shield which is promised via the union contact, months later still no mask, still no filters. Instead my fiancee uses the el-cheapo masks but even then sometimes there are none for days on end due to a stupid lazy, unsafe boss. Seriously, this country can take it's safety and shove it where the sun don't shine they haven't done squat for most people but make it easier for businesses to get off the hook due to lack of safety. Just blame it on the employee and they can proceed being as unsafe as they want while throwing up this fake safety fascade that occupational health & safety gets everyone to engage in.

Also, if this gets addressed the plant will become safer but the employees wages will drop even more, because money will be spent on safety and the labour isn't worth as much if there's no risk. By begging for workplace safety you are also begging for cheaper wages and less opportunity in my books, if you don't like a little danger then get a freakin office job.

You are correct because this is socialism vieled as democracy and fascism vieled as capitalism. I don't know how anybody can actually believe this (in any country on this planet) is still democracy. What a joke!

The employees weren't greedy. The employer was and probably still is. I don't get how you can say they deserved it when it is the boss's job to not send people into a situation like that and should know better not to as well seeing as the boss should be familiar with the operational conditions of all machinery used. I say the rest of the repair crew should have stuck the owner in the oven to see how he likes it. Everywhere I turn nowadays it seems like those are the only people offering jobs, this government through it's own economic policy has defeated it's own work place safety. How retarded, because it costs us both ways.

Sounds like you think you are somehow superior to everyone else. There's a doctor for people who think this way.

Did the workers do it for the money?

Safety at work starts with looking out for yourself first.

The workers had every right to refuse to carry out the task, regardless of what the employer told them.

I worked in the mining industry for a few years, a career with a high mortality rate and billions are spent on safety, yet accidents still happen.

What job is worth a life?

The workers, as horrible a tragedy this is, are at fault as much if not more than the employer.

Communism has nothing to do with common sense.

Thank goodness the world is not a pure democracy. Imagine what evils would be done if the majority could ignore any pleas of the minority.

indeed. But pure systems of either seek too much against either side.

Well I didn't say anything about communism.

I simply said that someone who actually cared would not have done this. And perhaps that's applicable to what you're saying.

Morning everyone.

This tragic event was 20 years ago tomorrow (16/05) and Ian erickson was my Dad

I’m now 34 and still struggle with this everyday that the selfish acts of people based on losing Small Hirt term profits caused me to lose my dad for a lifetime.

He was due to come travel north and head home to me and my brother that day to watch the FA cup final with us that day but sadly it never happened.

The unforgivable acts of, and I’m not going to hold back, absolute bastards, robbed me of the chance to have my first pint with him, be taught to shave, fatherly advice trough my young adult years and more. No amount of lost money can justify the pain I have felt for 20 years now.

I wish I could have 5 minutes with the people at fault, who i believe knew there was a chance they were sending them to their deaths. I’m not even angry on a physical level where I want to beat them up or anything, I’d just like the opportunity to let them know exactly what they’ve taken away for me and my brother and mam.

I’m very fortunate as my mam has been amazing throughout and although I know this post doesn’t fix anything I’ve checked the internet around this time of year every year and never had it in me to comment so here we are x

I'm so sorry for your loss and the hell you have been through.

I remember reading about it at the time and was utterly appalled.

I would like to think that proper union powers would stop all this, but bad things do happen even in a well unionised workplace.

I am disgusted that these bosses aren't rotting in jail where they surely belong.

20 years in the courts? Is that actually true? If so then its a complete disgrace on an already disgraceful legal system.
