When will the USA embrace the metric system and join the rest of the world in SI units?

I find it ironic that the current system in the states is a hybrid of the Imperial and metric measuring systems.

en.wikipedia.org...

I use the term hybrid to refer to the fact that when measurements get into fractions of inches, that the USA reverts to a metric form to quantify measurements...... i.e."Thousandths of an inch"

The reason for this little rant was due to seeing a(nother) conversion wrongly interpreted by someone obviously not familiar with S.I. units.

This was taken from an article pointed to by this thread

Here is an extract of what I'm talking about

According to the study, the radiation survey found that over 252,000 kilometres, or just shy of 100,000 square mile,s of Pacific ocean waters was contaminated by the time the study was completed on July 4th.

How many kilometres in a mile?

It is sad that the supposedly "greatest nation on Earth" is being left behind because of a failure to keep up with the rest of the world.

This was experimented with in the '70's, but it gained no traction.

I learned the metrics in school and it came in handy when I joined the military as the distances are measured in klicks and meters.

It's a NATO standard.

Ummmm……. What is the error?

252,000 square Km is a little under 100,000 square miles.

1 mile^2 is about equal to 2.58 km^2

The U.S. will probably have to wait to join the rest
of the world because of us babyboomers. We were
not taught the metric system in school.

Because if we switched to straight metric the economic cost to switch everything would be astronomical. All the speed limit signs to start with. Mile markers. Updating maps.

Automakers still build engines with SAE measurements... the cost of re-tooling a plant would be asinine.

In lehman's terms we'll stick with what we have as it works just fine... as they say, don't fix something that isn't broken.
