3 die of rare brain infection from amoeba in water

ATLANTA (AP) — Two children and a young man have died this summer from a brain-eating amoeba that lives in water, health officials say.

Health officials later found the amoeba in the home's water system. The problem was confined to the house; it wasn't found in city water samples, said Dr. Raoult Ratard, Louisiana's state epidemiologist.

Kinda scary that this thing seems to be living among us and has been around since the 1960's. Few people get it but all usually die so it makes you think what would it would take for this or something similar to become a full blown epidemic.

Very strange this happened in a home? There was a case here in FL a few years back where a healthy teenager, actually I think the guy was 21, went swimming in a water canal or swimming hole, it wasn't a lake or the ocean and that is about all I know and a one celled organism went up his nose and he died a few days later. It ate out his brain. I know it sounds crazy. I will see if I can find the story.
Scary stuff...and this was from the faucet???!!! And 3 people???!!!

That Jellyfish problem is becoming very scary. Not sure how they will deal with that.

Them amoeba are nothing to play with...

They multiply when the water warms up they are
usually in the later part of the summer
when you see these cases...

All it takes is one!!

went to a fish camp came home and 3 days later
he was dead..

The other case is a girl who went to visit her
grandmother in florida, jumped off their dock went swimming
within a few days..

Yes and a guy in FL. He was in his early 20's, very healthy. What is strange is a few other people were swimming the same place but they were ok.

...wonder what rare means nowadays... one in a million?... anyways, this amoeba thing reminds me of the flesh-eating bacteria thats getting more common... horrible way to go...

It happened in Chicago two or three years back.
Some people died and whatnot. It was disturbing then and it is disturbing now.
What the hell is happening ?

does any1 know if this effects animals...
like dogs that like to go in water....?
