1) Hollywood and the media in general are just like everything else, demand driven. The things that are portrayed are what people seem to want to see. I'm sure that in recent years there are multiple reasons ,both psychological and sociological, that this is the case.
2) Some people see organized religion as a threat to their right to live the life they choose to live. It's OK to have a set of beliefs that guide your life,but you do not have the right to determine other peoples beliefs. In the last few years it seems there has been a huge increase in radical religious movements. These movements believe that it is their right and duty to make their religious views the law.
You don't sound very radical to me, so I'm going to assume you don't fall into that category. People see religion alot like politics, you are either one thing or the other. In the real world there are more gray areas.
