Blockbuster style:
Aliens
Matrix - How many saw this in the theaters and left feeling like you were actually in the Matrix?
5th Element
Weird Science

Lesser known:
Cherry 2000 - one of my favorite movies of all time.

Donnie Darko certainly merits mention as do Predator, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Cube, Stalker (Tarkovsky), Planet of the Apes, Children of Men and Brazil. A Clockwork Orange is sci-fi too, right?

There's a distinct lack of Zardoz in this thread.

Cherry 2000 was cute, but one of the greatest of all time???

For me,

Star Wars (just goes without saying...one of the most successful franchises of all time)
Star Trek (same deal...though the odd movies weren't so hot)...
Logan's Run (love this flick)
2001/2010 (very thought provoking)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Speilberg at his best here)

Honorable mentions:

Blade Runner
E.T.
Jurassic Park

Yeah-up, sorry. For me it was one of those movies that as a youngster, I would watch over and over again. One of those movies that no matter the length of time in between viewings, I can still recite the lines. It's not discussed a lot and I was hoping someone would know it.

And since you said Star Wars, you will probably want to kill me for saying that Return of the Jedi was always my favorite...

I vote for a Horror thread next, sci-fi always ran a close second to my love of Horror.

Number one on my list is really a trilogy but it all counts i guess.

1) Starwars

2) Star Trek (some of the old ones rock, and some are weird... the new one was badass though)

3)ID4

4) The Matrix (whole trilogy counts for me)

5)They Live

Honorable Mention) 2001 A Space Odyssey (the last 20 minutes or so pisses me off. A little to acidtastic for my taste)

the day the earth stood still - 1951

the war of the worlds - 1953

20,000 leagues under the sea - 1954

planet of the apes - 1968

the omega man - 1971

i look forward to seeing blocula's list. blocula is welcome to my popcorn any day.

i enjoyed reading what others posted, there are some incredible titles mentioned. i agree 100% with many but did not want to be repetititve.

the movies i mentioned i feel are important to the genre, but a rainy week-end of 1950's Harryhausen B&W's, a stack of flicks where critters of all types become gigantic proportion topped off with A Clockwork Orange = kill me now, it doesn't get any better than this.

Cherry 2000 is so obscure - bravo! that movie was responsible for leaving a generation of young guys longing for their own lust robot. i think a jailbait Melanie Griffith was in that, no? yum, just yum.

another fun oddball sci-fi film from that time - do you recall a film by Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees) where a young modern-day fellow is racing on a dirt bike in the desert and accidentally goes through a portal that sends him back to the days of the old west? a fun watch. there is a later horror film that ripped the same premise but sent a crew of travelers into an ultra-violent old west where some sadistic s.o.b. ruled the town. my apology, i don't recall either movie title right now.
