Well wikipedia is not really a true source in my opinion for political and company information. For minor things perhaps, but for things involving governments, and companies, they usually manipulate it and have things they dont like removed.
America actualy had major issues with Europe deploying its own GPS, especially over frequencies used, they claimed it would making jamming it a problem during wars, America also objected to it as it would have an impact on American GIS businesses.
Britian also wanted Galelio as they want Europe to be as INDEPENDANT as can be (that shows you where that special relationship is going - down the crapper)
America only allows the Euro GPS system as they have now got the frequencies changed and have access to the data via some agreement. They probably can now also JAM it due to those frequencies being changed, and thus are ok with the idea now.
Russia and China are planning their own GPS; let's see how America react in that

Everything you just tacked to Europe still applies in the US. Obviously, you haven't paid much
attention to the widely varying accents and slangs we have. I can tell you with absolute certainty that as a south Floridian, my accent differs
noticeably from those in north Florida, as does some of our local slang. And the Florida culture is different from Louisiana culture, Montana culture,
Massachusetts culture. For crying out loud, in Florida we even have a little disdain for panhandle Floridians that we feel are more Georgian,
Alabamian and Mississippian than Floridian. And I guarantee a proud Brooklyn individual will tell you they differ greatly from a New Jersey person.
