The officer, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals, crossed the border into Turkey last week after being ordered to shoot to kill, bringing with him sickening details of increasingly desperate measures to end five months of demonstrations. He said he had beaten prisoners and fired on protesters in Damascus. At times during the past two months he was aware of Iranian troops – confirmed by senior officers – alongside his team in the Syrian capital.
On Sunday, a senior religious figure, Grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi, issued a statement saying: "It is the duty of all Muslims to help stabilise Syria against the destructive plots of America and Israel."

During May 2003, the USA began talks with the USA-backed Iraq National Congress to build an oil pipeline between Iraq and Israel. James Atkins (a former USA ambassador to Saudi Arabia) declared "There would be a fee for transit rights through Jordan, just as there would be fees for those using what would be the Haifa terminal. After all this is the new world order now. This is what things look like particularly if we wipe out Syria. It just goes to show that this is all about oil, for the United States and its allies."
By removing the Syrian government:
1) The US removes Iran's closest ally
2) The US removes Northern pressure on our precious Israel
3) The US can build it's pipeline without having to pay the Jordanians.
4) Further weakens the anti-West stronghold of the middle east. .
Just heard a report on NPR that Assad is now torturing resisters to death and throwing their mangled bodies out into public to scare the populace. The Syrian government is upping it's tactics and getting more and more flak from the West. Perhaps he sees what is going on in Libya and is pulling out all stops to prevent him from being the next despot to fall.

I agree. But Iran has a Defense pact with Syria, and if they are attacked, Iran will either have to stand up for it's ally or look weak in the face of the world. Russia also has their biggest out-of-country naval base there, and would not take kindly to NATO airplanes dropping bombs around it.
Also, the heavy fighting in Tripoli is going to be starting near the end of this month, and Assad's deadline to stop protests (given by Turkey) is August 8th.

I heard this NPR story as well....quite chilling. But I do not believe in "Humanitarian bombing" and think that would merely aggrevate the situation. Let the people there or regional partners sort it out. Not our concern
