I Saw Something I Wish I Hadn’t

AS A DISCLAIMER: I will NOT post the YOUTUBE version of the video. Part of the OP has information from Liveleak.com, where the video can be seen, in addition to the story.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT WATCH IT.

As I write this, I am feeling sick. I feel sad, angry at the people I just watched, and anger at myself for watching. I am immune to most things on the internet. I have seen quite a bit. Never, could I have imagined this horror.

That is, never could I not only imagine the scene itself, but I can’t imagine how we got to this point where anyone can get on the internet and see this.

In my time, Faces of Death, a series of movies that purported to show various “deaths” was hugely controversial. Most of the footage was so obviously staged and faked (at least for the first few) compared to what is available for viewing now, Faces of Death is like the Andy Griffith Show.

I started wondering about the decency laws on the internet, and how we got to the point where various .coms, including youtube, can show videos of villagers burning suspected witches alive, vigilante justice in Guatemala or the Philippines, war videos depicting various Apache strikes, the beheading videos from Iraq, Narco terrorists in Mexico torturing victims to music, etc…what happened?

I am pretty vociferous in my defense of the 1st amendment, but I think something is wrong with being able to profit from murder videos, as ultimately the sites that show them do. I hope some of you can weigh in on the subject because this is one I feel falls under the catalog of “obscene”.

Surprisingly, most of the decency and obscenity laws cover pornography. Violent acts are hardly mentioned in here:

The Communications Decency Act of 1996 (CDA) was the first notable attempt by the United States Congress to regulate pornographic material on the Internet. In 1997, in the landmark cyberlaw case of Reno v. ACLU, the United States Supreme Court struck the anti-indecency provisions of the Act.

FCC 1996 CDA

Regarding obscenity, here is what I found.

In a legal context, the term obscenity is most often used to describe expressions (words, images, actions) of an explicitly sexual nature. The word can be used to indicate a strong moral repugnance, in expressions such as "obscene profits", "the obscenity of war", etc. It is often replaced by the word salaciousness.

Obscene

Now. Here is a description of the circumstances in the video:
Chechnya War/Border of Dagestan - 1999

A group of rebel Chechens, led by Salautdin Temirbulatov crossed into the Republic of Dagestan, in an attempt to rout out the occupying Russian forces. Temirbulatov's group came across a village being defended by a sparse group of 13 Russian conscripts. Upon realizing they were greatly outnumbered, 7 of the soldiers fled, while the remaining 6 continued to fight. Once they had run out of ammunition, they surrendered themselves into a promised POW status.

First of, Salautdin Temirbulatov was known for, and eventually sentenced to life in prison, for his role for filming the murder of four Russian soldiers in 1996.

That “primer film” one very famous video, "chechclear", was shot in 1996 at the end of the first Chechen War.

Clad in fatigues and a beret, the Chechen commander laughs, kicks one prostrate Russian soldier, waves a pistol in the air, then steps up to a kneeling soldier and shoots him in the head.
Salautdin Temirbulatov, 41, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison Thursday on evidence created by his own men: an April 1996 videotape of him executing the soldier, Sergei Mitryayev.

Going back, three years after chechclear, some 250 militants overrun 13 Russian conscripts on the border with Dagestan. Seven Russians escape in the woods, but after being promised no harm, the other six, who had run out of ammunition, surrendered to Termibulatov.

What transpires next, and what is recorded on video, shows the most base, animalistic and disgusting scenes humans can see.
I am going to post the transcript from the film – at least part of it. If this description does not discourage you from watching the video nothing will.

Kid laying on the grass ....
Chechen with the knife "Turn around"
Kid moves abit sideways ..
Chechen off camera "LAY DOWN!"
Chechen takes the knife out and bends towards the kid ..

I will say one more time this is something no person should see. I have tears in my eyes, crying for humanity. Peace to everyone on this earth.

I remember this video. I do not even need to watch it to see the images in my head. I must have seen this over a decade ago and I will never forget it. I read the transcript and remember it. It is a reminder of the world we live in. There are bad people in the world.. Thanks for bringing this up again.

I appreciate your views and I would say thank your for letting anyone know NOT to watch it. It is something I will never forget seeing. I still am baffled by the laws on allowing murder to be shown on the internet as entertainment.

These people are the lowest of dogs... Even in war, there are laws to be followed. Makes me a bit angry to know had they been captured by my nation's military, they would have been treated with respect, dignity, not like this. They should be lined up and shot, every one of them.

War is harsh, as human beings I think everyone should see things like this to see the horrors of war and why it is bad. We need to stop glamorizing war with video games when this is truly what happens. It is a sick world we live in but people still claim it's beautiful.

Thanks for that comment. I know there have been some horrible murders comitted by American Forces, but those are the exception, not the rule. These people are animals. The leader is serving life in prison.

Yeah, I remember that one like I watched it five minutes ago, and it's been almost 6 years since I've seen it. Beheadings are the realm of sadists and monsters, the act being unnecessarily cruel and the filming meant to terrorize those who see it. I wish I could bleach my brain and forget what I've seen over the years. I haven't watched anything like that for quite a while, but it still sticks with me. My imagination is bad enough.

And no, I didn't click the link.

There are many arguments for why this should be allowed to be viewed, and I agree with what you say. Discussion and dialog of truth can never be a bad thing. I just don't know if there are words for this.

Why is it "laughable" that seeing this would disturb me?

I don't mean to come off as not taking the subject matter too lightly, but I first thought you were talking about this American tragedy....

I haven't seen this video, I've probably seen worse though and I agree that things like this should not be on YouTube. I don't believe they should be censored entirely though. If we just ignore these things and act like they don't happen we are doomed to keep letting them happen. They made me look at gore to get my license, and there was a good reason for it. Make everyone joining the military see this # before they sign IMO.

In one way it's a GOOD thing that these videos can be seen online because otherwise
people would refuse to believe that this...and WORSE!!...happens all the time in our
world!

You may be right Domo...speaking of car crash horror training films, check out my thread:
From War Movies to Mondo Films to Sexploitation to Modern Educational & Training Videos

Also, I thought I had seen it all until I saw this. Fully another level of horror.

it's a sad fact that wars bring out some of the most sadistic tendencies in some people.
all ways has and all ways will. and not just on the side that would be perceived as the evil ones.

as far as laws, i don't know that it is so much put out for entertainment, maybe more for information, and yes companies do make money, by selling spots on their sites. but you know they have to, in order to keep the info coming.

i will not watch if i'm given a warning and think that it will bother me, i have seen some that just stayed with me for days on end.

that being said, i think that every body that can handle the video should watch it and keep the memory of these victims alive so that they will not be forgotten and that justice can and will be served.

Yeah. I saw it many years ago and then saw it reposted. Any ideas on why obscenity and decency laws mostly pertain to pornography?
