Protest Prompts Shutdown of Chemical Plant

english.cri.cn

Authorities in China's northeastern city of Dalian ordered a chemical plant to be "immediately" shut down after a dozen thousand residents took to the city's streets on Sunday to demand that the plant be relocated over concerns of potential toxic chemical leaks.

...Dalian is China's 'garden city.' The plant, located only 20 km away from the city center, is like a time bomb," said a protester surnamed Wang.

"If it is not moved now, Dalian will be destroyed," he added.

This plant produces paraxylene, a carcinogenic petrochemical used to create raw materials for the production of polyester film and fabrics. It is located in an area where there is extreme danger of damage to the facility from flooding. A dyke was recently breached, causing concern.

China remains a public health nightmare, dogged by corruption, information suppression, suppression of medical records, denial of the needs of the people in favor of the needs of industry and graft. But we can help by remaining aware and vigilant. 12,000 people took to the streets in Dailan. Let's pause to listen for a moment to their voices amid the cacophony of the suffering on this sad sad broken planet earth.

bumping, good find S&F.
People should look at this, and use it as an example for what to do here. It seems North America is all protest protest but not do anything about it.
