I disagree... what if I change opinions? And do so minute by minute?

Then minute by minute, second by second, picosecond by picosecond you are defined differently in regards to this...
You are making a case for agnosticism, but again, agnosticism is really just and adjective verses a noun...it describes what sort of theist or atheist you are..it should not be considered a valid view.

How can one be sure of something that there is no proof of (or at least the proof is arguable... I say this as the argument is older than I am)? I like to be open to all options and like to listen to all points of view. And we do live in a world of herms and trangenders, so your example isn't the say-all you may believe it is (but do keep believing... it is your right to be wrong too)

ok, since the male/female thing obviously confused you, lets make it more simple
the light is either on or off...there is no halfway or neither...you either are an atheist, or a theist...what your engaging in, is wordplay that is again, completely meaningless.

Do you believe in a deity? yes or no...
If "I don't know", then that means you are agnostic, but the question is, do you then default into a belief or non belief.

I don't know if there is a god, but since there is no compelling proof, then I will not believe (and thereby not go to church) until such evidence comes forward to compel me to reassess

Alternatively, you don't know, so therefore there probably is one and you will do whatever/define your world by deitys and magic, go to church, etc.

It is a simple question, and indeed is a simple answer...trying to offend nobody will only make you seem either dismissive of everyone else, or not thinking things through, which is sort of insulting also considering some people are quite passionate about the subject...

Sort of like saying the subject matter is not important enough for you to investigate in on, because its beneath you.

You are posting something based fully on ego...you want to be somehow superior than the rest, but the issue is, what you said is soo meaningless it might as well just be random letters you smacked on the keyboard.
I mean no offense

wow... you "mean no offense" but yet throw insults in my direction. I do not at all want to be superior than everyone else (I can't believe you'd even pretend to know what I want or am... talk about a superiority complex!).

Its was meant no offence to you because its a common mindset amongst "enlightened spiritualists" whom are tripping up on words due to perhaps lack of understanding.
Its common for someone to try and feel superior (subconscious ego) by saying..well, both sides are stupid, the only proper way to be is like me -gleaming smile-...its a way to not only take sides, but propel your personal self image above the entire discussion...this is ego, but not conscious ego, just a subconscious desire to be better than the rest...and since its easier to dismiss everyone verses actually understand what is being said, then its also the simple way out.

Its common...
incidently, a couple years ago, I would have fully agreed with you, and also called myself an agnostic while laughing at atheists and theists alike...until I realized I was an atheist no matter how open my mind was.

I would much rather everyone be as superior as me (I'm trying to use humor here to lighten the fact that you are trying to insult me)!

Not trying to insult you
But I suspect you are trying to find insults
And I am more superior than you, because I can fly....well, ok, but I am a pretty l33t gamer and could probably toast you in a variety of games.

No, I would much rather everyone realize we are equal. But do please keep analyzing me... you obviously have a degree in psychology (how else could you know how I think).

Yes...I do

I think your words are as meaningless as mine (notice the equality thing here) so get off your high horse and stop telling people how right you are.

Why would I want to do that
1) I like my horse
2) I am right, as its a pretty binary point being made...sort of like in base math class when 2 + 2 is asked...the answer is 4, not 12, not potato...its 4.

I used to respect your opinion, but after reading your postings in this thread, I realize you aren't here to accomplish anything other than telling people how right you are and it feels like your trolling for arguments.

Ahh the good ole days...when the sun was brighter, and I was all about being humble and agreeable...I remember we had to carry our text down to the server and place em there..and we were greatful! now, all this fancy newfangled opinions and wa...wait, what are you going on about? I have always been blunt...but hey, if you think having a different opinion = trolling...meh, lightweight

You sign out with "peace" after sending out your attacks... love it. Obviously you have no concept of peace. That smiley face only adds to the insult.

Again, your percieved attacks personally based on what I defined as a pet peeve
no, you are not the starting of my pet peeve...its a pet peeve because soo many have no clue what the difference is between an atheist or theist...and my serving to correct you personally was only incidental...would have gladly ranted to a good friend equally in order to get proper information about the subject out. I am open to discussing an opposing point, and why you think there is a third option of non-compliance towards the very basic catagories should you make solid points though.
And what...you don't like smileys? I was actually told to do that in order to seem more "friendly" in my posts so people stop reading it with their anger tone verses my neutral discussion "tone".

Well, I've stepped into a realm I don't want to be in (arguing, insulting, not looking for understanding, not looking to share ideas) and am stepping out of this conversation (I didn't know you had to be ignorant to be part of this one)... feel free to toss insults back and forth in the name of peace and theism or atheism or whatever. Enjoy ('cause I sure am not). Thanks for coming out SaturnFX

Very judgemental based on your feelings.
I suspect your having a rough week and will let that pass...but ya, I insulted the concept you presented (which is wrong), you chose to take it as insulting you personally...meh, no matter what you say, someone will choose to be offended.

Here you go...quite simple and no word spinning into meaninglessness.

Quoting the dictionary is word spinning? Ok.

Deitys...we don't believe in deitys.

Ok well maybe you should follow the language hole that defines what a deity is. You are essentially declaring disbelief in existence. You need only read the dictionary. I helped you out in the other message.

We are not saying there are absolutely no deitys...that is not atheism, that is gnostic atheism...but atheism is no belief in a deity(s)...conscious creators of the universe...gods...

pretty sure that answers your question.

As far as not believing being resisting belief...well, I also personally don't believe in unicorns, I don't resist the temptation to believe in unicorns, because there is no temptation based on personal evidence that they exist.

Do you support the posting of billboards declaring disbelief in unicorns? I hope not. But you are OK with billboards declaring a bearded floating entity in the sky is not real? Aren't both unicorns and bearded entities in the sky equally retarded?

If "God" shows up personally and proves he is indeed the one creator of all things, etc...I will certainly believe at that point that some godlike creature, probably god (or a minion thereof) does exist, even though I may not be able to make sense of it.
I would also accept my personal subjective experience does nothing for the overall cause of letting the truth be known. I would tell my story, people would be skeptical of it, and I would fully agree with their skepticism...just relay the events to the best of my ability and move on...knowing exactly why atheists think how they think and without any bad words for them other than a hope that they also recieve whatever it was that I recieved, or some actual proof turned up that cannot be refuted.

I think your problem truly is your understanding of God. it's nice to assume that anyone that believes in God is an idiot but i really think smart people who believe in God do not think God is what you think God is. Your understanding of God is extremely juvenile based on your comments. And yes many fundamentalist Christians also have a juvenile understanding of God.. But why go through the trouble making billboards pointing it out?

See...I am not resisting the belief in God, there is nothing to resist beyond other people telling me I should believe in unicorns and god...I simply don't believe in them

I am not opposed to the idea of godlike aliens btw...but meh, we all like entertaining speculation to some degree.

That's OK. But you insist on using the word God. And if i believed THE DEFINITION of God as you did, i wouldn't believe in it either. But i don't believe in your definition of God. I think it is totally and completely shallow, one-dimensional and juvenile.

Cutting out the stuff to deal with the only relevant bits.

Yes, I am ok with it.
Reason being, we don't have politicians trying to push unicorn values, we don't have unicorn death squads around the world blowing stuff up for not being unicorny enough, etc.
Should it ever come to that, yep...there will be a resistance movements of non believers in unicorns to try to get the very real and measurable madness to stop by opening up eyes here and there and let them reflect on their belief.
No, It would be stupid to put up "there is no elves in the forest" or leprecauns at the end of a rainbow billboards, because its not widely believed, and it doesn't effect anything currently for the few that may believe.
When policy is made, and people die, thats when its time to stand up and be the adult

Vs

The reason the unicornitarians..erm, theists rather, are =finally= under the scope is because they have been pushing atheists...the people...as the target for hate.
Atheists and their billboards are attacking the concept of the theistic belief...rarely if ever the actual person behind it...
So, ya...we are simply shooting back a bit, with bullets made of flowers at that (offically in public, go to youtube for some more interesting challenges).

That's OK. But you insist on using the word God. And if i believed THE DEFINITION of God as you did, i wouldn't believe in it either. But i don't believe in your definition of God. I think it is totally and completely shallow, one-dimensional and juvenile.

I use it by the definition of what...80+ percent of the word...a singular deity prayed to by jews, christians, muslims, and many other religions (including multi-gods such as wiccan duel god/ess, etc).

I personally enjoy speculating on a ordered universe that may have consciousness...its a neat idea. the entire universal bubble being a single neuron on this rather large brain being that has a sort of self awareness unlike anything we could imagine...however, I recognise its just hypothetical speculation and wouldn't dare push it on anyone as the offical concept of God...just a "god" I personally could accept as real..then again, pantheistic beliefs are generally hated by most religions almost as much as atheists...

My concept...personally...on what would qualify as a god and -maybe- have a chance of actual existance and proof one day is that...a non-juvenile very massive and potentially immortal order in the universe...the bearded guy wanting you to stop touching your junk is not just without proof to me, but completely absurd...yet it is this belief that has towers fall down from people smacking planes into them, or beheading people, etc etc etc.

Yes, when a illogical belief becomes a weapon and murders people...its time to speak up forcefully on the subject and infect peoples mind with skepticism and rational thought.

Ok I get it. You think people that believe in God are dangerous because they believe in God. They use their belief to commit heinous crimes like murder (war).

Wouldn't a billboard promoting peace and understanding do more for your cause? Assuming your cause is to stop war/hate and promote understanding. I guess a lot of believers and non-believers alike find these billboard offensive because they will never actually do anything to promote love and understanding!

There is no point getting in a discussion with you as you are always right, and all that becomes of that is argument (we obviously come here for different reasons). You accuse me of wordplay, but then pick at and quote everyone's words to twist them in your favor, only proving your hypocritical nature (the examples in your words are many). I really do hope you do find the peace that you pretend to wish upon people... because you won't find it if this is how you communicate with them.

I apologize to the OP, I really didn't mean to derail your thread...

and I could care less what you have to say

I am curious. You have used this phrase twice now. Are you saying you do care what the poster had to say. It does not seem to make sense.

Did you actually mean "I could NOT care less what you have to say"?

Thanks for posting that picture, I've been wanting to save it for a while.

This is a really rough draft, but I've always wanted to see how long this billboard would last if it got put up in that state:

I doubt it'd be approved. There's a double standard that says hate speech like that is still allowed against atheists. It's ridiculous.

People hate atheists simply because the dont like and are afraid of the truth. Atheists are have an anti crutch mentallity and their haters dont want to give up their crutches!!!

TPTB dont like atheists because they cant be so easily lead or controlled!

In the conflict between various forms of authoritarian extremism (which eventually will draw egalarians into it), the extremists without present power will often disguise their own positions and defenses/promotional-activities in smoke-screens of semantic propaganda, weird homecooked methodologies or other unsavoury tactics.

Not being an atheist myself, I nonetheless generally side with 'agnostic' atheists, as I find them considerably better self-defined and with more intellectual honesty than the missionary theist.

These questions are ofcourse ultimately to be considered from an epistemological perspective, an area where angels and missionary theists don't willingly tread (and where there btw aren't any 'absolute' answers, though some insights to be gained), and when we thus (possibly) have gone full circle, it's back to what mankind decides on consentually.

And that return to simplistic pragmatism will also be a return to the initial propaganda-methods, where the intermediary benefits from serious approaches such as logic/philosophy, epistemology, science, theology, comparative studies and whatever tools mankind has at hand to seek truth/reality, will be immediately forgotten, ignored or twisted in the eternal: "Me right, you wrong", escalating into: "Me wise, you stupid" and ending with: "You see that big stone over there? How would you like to have it smashed down on your head?"

It could be. One obvious reason some people would hate them would be because they have spent time and money making somewhat hateful (insinuating stupidity of a group of people) billboards.

And although they believe they are justified and perhaps even obliged to do this, it is still considered hateful. They obviously feel threatened in some way otherwise they would not react in any way at all. And by getting together and identifying themselves as a group who's main expression is hate/ridicule are they not doing the very thing they claim they are fighting against? Many peaceful atheists think so.

haters gonna hate.

you forgot the economic aspect, an atheist is someone who isn't paying his/her tithe.

also not all believers/theists hate atheists, i don't see wiccans cursing/hexing atheists just to give an example.

educate-yourself.org...

Imagine how incensed American Bible Belt Christian fundamentalists would react if Muslims or Buddhists, or Hindi "preachers" came knocking on their door and got into their face about being "saved" in the same way that Christian fundamentalists have set up shop among other cultures and in other lands.

Christian fundamentalists would be FURIOUS and their reaction would be swift and severe to any who would DARE attempt to dissuade them from their self righteous Biblical assumptions and preacher-inspired beliefs. but self anointed, "servant of God" Christian fundamentalist hypocrites actually have the nerve to declare that it's their "duty" and "responsibility" to "bring the salvation of the Lord" to other people, in other cultures, because "the Lord" told them to to it, blah, blah, blah, when the real "mission" is to gather more power, gain greater influence, and expand their financial empires.

Of course, but if you understand the meaning of "haters gonna hate" you'd know that haters come from all walks of life.

I just thought the video explains why people tend to hate atheism, especially those with "strong" faith.

Here's some examples of how things can get heated.

Some rather rash responses to the petition against the cross at 9/11 site:-
