I've invested in A standard German Bundeswehr G36 with bipod and a Beta C-Mag drum magazine, Accuracy and ammo capacity is key, it has a great range and can be used in almost any type of close combat to open conflict while also having the advantage of being lightweight and being very reliable, I suggest this for your wife.
Here's some more info on the Weapon H&K G36 Info

Do you think all gun owners want to kill someone? I'm not even sure how to respond to that. I have owned a rifle since i was 12 and have never thought about using it on another human being.

Self defence does not equal want to kill.

Self defense most certainly IS a want to kill. To even shoot towards someone without a desire to end them is a road that leads to misery. Either you will flinch and they will get YOU, or you will accidentally injure or kill them any how, and will be entirely unprepared psychologically for the event. Either way, it's a bad business, and you're better off investing in a good pair of running shoes than a firearm.

Shooting to scare doesn't work - it pisses folks off, lets them know that you really don't mean it, and they will get you come hell or high water. Shooting to wound, especially in a SHTF situation is the equivalent of a death sentence any how, and a long, drawn out, painful one at that. It's just plain inhumane.

Life and death ain't target practice where you're just punching holes in paper.

For your own personal sake, i hope everything you just said was a joke. If you think running away is going to save you and yours, good luck. Just don't come knocking on my door asking for help when SHTF. Be prepared for the worst, hope for the best, and survive in the end. Attitudes like yours is why burglary rates are on the up.

Be advised: what I said there may have been somewhat tongue in cheek, but it was most certainly not a joke.

No where did I say I was going to run anywhere - that's my advice to those who are too squeamish to end an opponent. I am not.

If you can't bring yourself to drop them like a pole axed steer, your only options are to run like hell and die tired, or give yourself up right then and there, and get it over with ASAP. Either way, you're not likely to make it long-term.

I think you need not fear me or mine coming to ask for help. Never have, never will.

Burglary rates are actually DOWN in my neighborhood. Evidently word gets around, and most everyone here knows that I won't lose a wink of sleep after popping an intruder. You can either trust me on that, or read the police reports. Doesn't make much difference to me.

Nossir, I meant what I said. If you're not ready to drop 'em in a puddle of their own juice, you're not prepared to defend yourself. Doesn't mean you have to go that far, it means you'd damn well better be ready to if they want to take it that far.

In a SHTF scenario, the ONLY two alternatives to defense are to run like hell or surrender up front, and them's the facts, Jack.

We already have a few guns I recently bought myself a 223 AR and she has been practising with the 22 rifle but I want her to have a little more fire power. We shoot every weekend and she is getting pretty good but she doesn't like the AR platform.

Any suggestions?

Teach her to like the AR platform!!! LOL... But any semi-auto rifle will do. Semi autos are easy to use, typically pretty light, and the ability to store the ammo in magazines--ready to go--is invaluable.

Also... don't discount the .22 rifle so quickly. If the S really HTF, the ability to find ammo will be a major concern. .22 ammo is the most abundant, readily available ammo there is.

Look to a 20g auto loading shotgun.
Kick/recoil is manageable and the auto loading is great.

Saiga.

I have a saiga 12 gauge (complete with flashlight, reddot, t-handle, 10 round mags) It's a bad machine, but very prone to jam. You gotta put at least 50 to 100 rounds through it before it'll even stop jamming on a regular basis. Love my gun, but worries me in a shtf scenario.

For home protection nothing beats a short barreled 12 gauge shotgun, pistol grip optional, just point and shoot, can't miss, also the loud bang and muzzle flash is enough for any intruder to crap his britches and scram. Perfect for a female homeowner. It demands attention and screams authorita.

I was thinking the same thing,

I see where you're coming from. The American gun craze is a strange thing for me as well.

They have a violent history and a present culture that romanticizes violence throughout Hollywood for example. Basically the entire underlying ideology that holds America together is by nature a violent one, much more violent then in Europe for example. Americans hate everything that even rieks of 'socialism',- take care of yourself is the idea. A nation of people that needs no government to look after them, the individual will take care of himself.

Of course this is somewhat of a over-simplification, but you get the idea.

It is from this underlying ideological mind-set, this idea of needing to look after yourselves - living in a harsh and cruel world as we do - that this strong desire for being prepared at all costs comes from. Just look at the Cold War era and how people were building bunkers in preparation for a nuclear attack. These type of things are very rare in Europe, or anywhere else for that matter.

It is interesting to note that even with this powerful individualistic mind-set America is slowly dying. One can wonder about the causes. Some would prefer to blame it all on a monolithic elite - the illuminati - but I find that way of thinking near-infantile. There are so many causes. I tend to believe that ways of thinking and behaving create situations. And as we all do that, we are all accountable for what occurs on a greater scale.

I always say that a bit of socialism would do America very well. They think they know it all and have the best system of all, but I think it's evident that that simply isn't the case. A nation that lets its diseased 9/11 rescue workers rot away in their misery really needs to do some serious thinking. But that's my take on it.

Depending on what your looking for and what your wife can handle and state law restrictions saiga makes some very nice semi automatic shotguns. An M1A is always nice but might be alittle big, or if your want something to pack a punch look up mini-30s, SKS, or an AK model. 7.62 x 51 is a very good round and several companies make outstanding models, you might want to research more in FN Herstal, HK, and Barret.

When you don't have to move from your house, i would advice some reliable 12 gauge shotgun. Depending on state you live in, you can buy without problems shotgun with pistol grip or without. To ensure penetration to all targets, including burglar with kevlar vest, i advise to load shotgun alternately with slugs and buckshot.
If you want mobility and in case of SHTF you would have to leave house, i advise Ruger Mini-14, light and accurate, using common ammo.

I have a 30-30 winchester. It's got a reasonable range and is light weight and easy to handle for a woman. The round has decent stopping power. The tube mag holds 7 rounds. This gun has very low kickback, she should be able to handle it well.

That is a classic rifle isn't it? I remember that rifle from old western movies.

Your Saiga 12 problems can be solved. Sounds like you're having gas issues. You could also polish all your internals. Go to the Saiga 12 forum. There's a plethora of info on that site to fix your problem.

EDIT: You can also send it in for warranty work

The 30-30 is a classic and what my friends and I started with for hunting. The 22 rifle was actually all of our first starters for shooting but not for home protection. It is a good gun all all-purpose rifle. I still have one and use it as a back-up for hunting in case my scopes gets out of alignment on my other rifle, plus I kept it open sights to use in rainy whether or hunting in laurel patches for closer and quicker shots.

I agree. Especially with extended magazine with alternating slugs and OO buck. A rifle or handgun at night is hard to zero in with, unless she is an expert to begin with and equipped with a good light, which gives away your position.

or rock some tritium sights like my p226 elite =)

Yes this is a classic rifle. The one I have was given to me as a gift. It's pre 1963. After 63 winchester started using some stamped parts and those guns are not as reliable. It's a real beauty and one of my favorites to take to the range. It is durable and dependable. I've never gotten a jam or any other problem with it. I shoot it with iron sites cause if you dropped it with an optical site it is easy to knock the site out of alignment. The iron sites seem to be unaffected by rough handling.

So maybe we should be like Great Britain and allow any criminal to do anything the darn well please because if you had a gun you might hurt them. So after creating this wonderful socialist state that's dying on its own, what happens? The government wants to cut back and the socialists riot by attacking the only shopkeepers who are actually working for a living (and who are likely immigrants unused to the idea of a Nanny State.) So now your only recourse os to go buy aluminum baseball bats so you can at least pretend to defend yourselves.

You got rid of your rich, so now you're all poor. Pathetic.

A 357 magnum round is easily strong enough. High velocity if you need to penetrate walls and if you don't want it to go through the perp you get hollow points. I can't believe you say you use 9mm and say you are unsure of a much more powerful round to get the job done. I'd suggest you look up bullet ballistics so you can get an idea of how they actually work.

Did you actually read what I wrote? I had a 44 mag and two 9mm, one a parabellum. The 357 didn't give me the "feel" I wanted in launching modified ballistics. I used to use scored hollow points and I filled them mercury, or my own lab produced hydrogen cyanide crystals, or semtex which I mixed up from PETM and RDX plus about 12% mineral oil (and something else I won't go into), the compression triggers were usually 22 rimfire cut-off or I'd use .38 center caps soldered in place with ground magnesium and phosphorus under the cap. I know a bit a bit about ballistics and ammunition as well as chemistry. One of my rounds went into the car (Opel S100) of 4 terr's at about 75 feet distance (an ANC hijack attempt), it looked like a flaming flower the way it blew the front of the car apart, almost pretty LOL. I've been around ;-)

Cheers - Dave

"I" have a 270 and hit a deer at 350 yards. Oh did I mention I am female.
Practice makes perfect and I can slide that bolt pretty darn quick if I have to.
We also have several other rifles and I can use any of them.
Why don't you ask her what she wants?

Hey everyone I just wanted to say thanks again for all the ideas and good input. As for everyone bashing owning a gun or my wife shooting all I can say is don't come to my door looking for help or food when this country finally does tank, don't worry my wife and I may not have the "want to kill", but are willing to do what needs to be done.
