Jeez, give it a rest
As far as planes go, there have been some classics AND turkeys produced on BOTH sides of the Atlantic.

Because a marine can adapt, overcome, and improvise. The AK-47 was designed and built back in the 1940s and is still one of the best assault rifles in the world. So being "outdated" is not a bad thing, if something has been around awhile that means it works. Many do not know what they are talking about but i am a pilot and an aircraft enthusiast so i am happy to keep this pissing contest going. I can hit the ceiling what about you?

I know one thing a Marine cannot adapt to.....Peace and civilian life.

Pretty embarrassed by my fellow country men and women slagging of the US and the F35 and F22 etc.

I worked on the Eurofighter and it was grounded many times during development. Unfortunately, thats how engineering works, you come up with what you think is the best design, then try and break it, sometimes it breaks too soon.

Couple of reasons Typhoon was grounded, a pilot got locked in cos the Canopy Unlock Broke, doesnt sound too serious does it, but if this pilot was locked in, in Saudi Arabia, for 1 hour, in those temps, he would be dead, so cat 1 failure. Manufacturing defect by the way.

Smoke pouring through the air con, couple of faulty PCB with diodes fitted the worong way - faulty batch, maufacturing error.

Typhoons unable to deplay to Afghanistan, when did Typhoon enter service and it only dropped its first LGB in combat last month.

Doesnt make the plane crap or outdated or anything does it?

Wait until Taranis is productionised...if the British Government can afford it.

PS. The B2 isnt grounded is it? Just the F22 and development F35?

OP. If all of our top of the line stealth projects are being grounded, cancled scrapped what have you, the money could be funneling into a top secret project that is fundamentally different from other fighter/bombers/attackers. Within the last 10 years or so UCAVs have come into the light, and are quite capable at what they do. How hard would it be to pylon up so AIM-120s and AIM-9s onto a predator and give it orders to shoot down another aircraft. As aircraft get more advanced the G-forces they can make are growing as well. If you take the pilot out of the aircraft the G tolerance goes way up, so it would make sense to take the pilot out of the cockpit(that phras makes me sick to my stomach) They could be about to annouce such an aircraft, but i doubt they will. Lockheed has been working on the F-22 since the 80s. It really looks like an F-15 with a body kit and systems upgrade to me.

Thats not fair to say. I know plenty that have done tours of combat and have adapted to civy life. They all dont have that "Kill `em all let god sort them out" mentality. But this threads not about marines its about advanced combat aricraft.

C'mon dude, it only doesn't make sense if you look outside of the profit.

What? They are supposed to fly all the time? To defend the country? Oh, yeah sure, I supposed they can do that too.

I think the whole stealth thing is going to play out soon any way. It is just a mater of time before some one invents a radar type system that will make stealth planes pointless as they will show up just as any non-stealth plane does. All weapons systems have a limited life span. They get countered by something better.

The F-22s are down because of a possible faulty oxygen system, and the F-35s are down because of "a valve problem in the plane’s integrated power package". They SHOULD be grounded until the problems are sorted. It would be a shame to loose an aircraft, and possibly a pilot, because of a known problem.

Both aircraft were designed and assembled in the US, but I have no doubt that many of the components used in subsystems were manufactured by foreign countries. "Made in the USA" is a term that should be changed to "Assembled in the USA". I'd be willing to bet the faulty components weren't "Made in the USA"! F-22s and F-35s (which are still under developement) are not the only "stealthy" aircraft in our arsenal. Nor are they the only supersonic aircraft. Believe me, we have numerous "more than capable" aircraft.

How is that good old Academic - Industrial - Military - Complex. working for you

I reckon it's working pretty good. Many other countries still depend on us.

they have roads that turn into runways

Big deal, we have thousands upon thousands of miles of interstate highways that were built with that in mind too.

Funny, it was the Tornado doing all the grunt work in the Gulf war.

That one made me laugh. Thank you!

I find it hilarious that American's practically worship the statue of liberty on one hand and diss the French on the other as cowards when infact the statue is French itself.

I'd be willing to contribute to a fund to ship it back to them.

Sounds like WW2 all over again, taking the yanks a year or more to decide to do anything.

I'll bet you are one of those that constantly calls us war mongers!

NASA:.. German

Wrong..., NASA is American.

Concord - OLD OUTDATED JUNK, yet you are still trying to go faster than sound with hypersonic gliders that you just LOST CONTACT WITH?

The Concorde fleet HAS been retired!

I also remember one of them crashing, and killing all those on board, because of a known problem... tire failures. Perhaps the poor souls onboard would still be alive if this aircraft had been grounded until the problem was corrected.

This "hypersonic glider" you refer to is still experimental, and is a LOT faster than the Concorde was.

RADAR was not invented by the British!

OHH dont forget, it was a US general incharge of the Balkans mission, and it took the UN and EU almost 9 months to convince the USA that genocide had to be stopped

I'll bet you are one of those that constantly call us war mongers too!

See ya,
Milt

I can think of other ways to detect stealthy craft...so the boys at skunkworks kin too.....
Infra red for one....
The whole my aircraft is better than yours thing is BS
The vaunted harrier os slow.It has a very high crash record due to its being a bit of a beast at some maneuvers.
The pilot error thing goes way up in training too....
The stealthy f117 wasnt mentioned...was it?
I still think theres a few kickin around.
The B2 also is one line to defend the conus from enemy aliens too.
The f18 and f15 variants are very much competetive with other operational aircraft at this time.
Coupled with other capabilities the US has, like AWACS etc, and the armaments we use which work better than some other countries ones.
Our communications net,and intelligence satelite capability leave us well protected while they readjust the rigging in the new aircraft.
Its my understanding that the joint strike fighter is a totally new concept of design and manufacturing so glitches will persist in such endeavours.
Theyll be here when they get here, donthold yer breath, and dont panic!

I'm OK with teachers getting paid personally. Education is important etc.

How is grounding the airplanes going to win votes from illegal immigrants? Is that a huge point of contention with them? That the US has stealth fighters? Illegal aliens can vote?

Fix planes patrol border with them. Hard to outrun a jet.

Predator Drone flying the border operator spots drug runners escorted by Mexican Army..missiles launched..Predator flys back to base.
Same thing as Mig flying on patrol Stealth Drone unseen fires Mig is destroyed Stealth Drone flys home with pilot safe at his computer..Remote piloted Stealth aircraft..give it a thought

One fourth the size .Stealth teck .able to out manouver a human pilot due to fact that the pilot at his computer is not under the stress a on board pilot would be and he is able to make manouvers that would cause an on board pilot to pass out .

Without going into gr8 details about my love for what America was founded on and my belief in the "American People" I will keep this short and sweet.

China hacked and continues to hack our secrets and vice versa. ( BTW strange that the US Govt. recently asked for hackers to come forward to be possibly put on the payroll ) Not too many months ago, a hack from the Chinese was announced and hushed immediately. Coincidentaly the Raptor program was put on hold by the Obama Administration soon after the announcement. I was a bit upset at the time because in a perfect world , so to speak I believe in reasonable defense spending etc. I can't say for sure but it would be reasonable to think that China is spending LOADS OF MONEY on it's military and defensive/offensive technologys development. From what I have learned and seen in history, the "Countermeasure" is the most important weapon. Maybe we are upgrading the Stealth Aircraft to counter the countermeasure?

More will be revealed!! Thx for the thread!!

I wonder....did everyone in the world already know the United States was basically crippled in offensive action right now or did the Administration help our enemies with a news flash they may not have been aware of before? Thanks....The world really needed to know we have no offensive capabilities at all right now where we don't already own the airspace. I'm sure it really helps to spread the information far and wide.

Maybe the people behind this little announcement can take a a suggestion and wait until AFTER the stand-down has passed before giving public details of every aspect of it.

we still have plenty of other planes other than stealth fighters capable. not like we are a duck in the water. yes we have sold alot to other countries but no worries.

Worst case scenario, EMP is detonated, and anti-sat projectiles disable their targets. The Sat comms to drones are lost, and your back to guess what? F-22's and F-35's (the old dog and pony show).
But what the heck, like Ben Rich of Lockheed said,"We have stuff out in the desert that can send ET back home."

I'm not worried.
