Hey, it's a job for a lot of people that have no other options. There IS a lot of animosity on this site towards military personnel and there shouldn't be. People who don't like our military involvement around the world need to take that issue up with the politicians, not the people that are just performing their jobs.

Dont hate us because we chose a path you were to timid to take.

Being "timid" has nothing to do with it. Joining the military is a job-of-last-resort for most just as it sounds like it was for you. There are a few people who join out of a sense of patriotism, but for most it's a job for those who otherwise have poor employment prospects. Military pay is poor, benefits are mediocre and the working conditions are terrible. To draw people into their ranks the military pumps up the patriotic aspects of it through what is likely the world's biggest ad campaign, making it sound like joining is the "American" thing to do. But honestly you're sent off to fight wars against an ambiguous "enemy" (that often was someone we counted as our friend and supported financially right up to declaring them an "enemy") with undefined goals and no exit strategy. If anything, this is un-American. We didn't build this country into the world's only superpower by bullying everyone into submission, but that's exactly what we try to do now and it is completely unsuccessful. I feel sorry for our people in the military because unlike many veterans before, they've got nothing to be proud of. They're not defending freedom anymore, they're just fighting wars for pot-bellied politicians that think it's all a big game.

Also to suggest (as you did) that you joined the army & fought in a bunch of wars killing people while friends & collegues around you also died so that you could do a bit of extra travelling is equally nutso...

I dont recall ever putting that in my post....

It wasnt a last resort, it was a first choice, I had a 4 year scholarship to Prairieview A&M for both football and ROTC, but I wanted to be all tough and *SNIP* and stay enlisted, we kinda talked crap about officers who came into the army and didnt know their *SNIP* from a hole in the ground.... I will admit, had I known better then, I probaly would have went to college first.

I see why everyone is getting pissy about being timid.... As a 18yo full of testosterone and ready for a challenge, If you weren't military you weren't *SNIP*, At least that the mentality I had back then. So dont take being called timid personal... If it struck a chord with you, then maybe you just are too timid to take a jab.... Anyone worth their salt would just over look it and know I was not talking about them

Sorry, have to disagree again.

It's about time people tske responsibilty for their actions.

If you're part of the military you're part of the so called 'problem'. (for lack of a better word)

Don't hide behind lame excuses as 'it's just my job'.

I think that is wrong.

I think you miss my point.... I, as an ex soldier do not agree with 95% of this bull ish the government is doing... NOW, but at that time, that was my choice, and I completed my obligation... So, yes if my duty was to protect citizens agaist currupt politicle terrorist, so be it...
edit on 10/8/11 by AdamAnt because: (no reason given)

Respect for takeing a choice and pursuing it, but this is where I jump off the wagon.
If You dissagree to most of You'r obligations why would You pursue them? (unless You'r relatives and friends are under some kind of serious treat).
Even if it was only 1 or 5% I wouldent if I might be forced to kill other people or be put in a life and death situation. Now because of OP and especially because of the corrupt systems around the western world I'm "never" joining the military.

That said I find the issue dualedged.
Because the military also do alot of good deeds like peacekeeping and beeing guardians of their homecountry's. The soldiers risk their life for others.....I can only have the highest respect people with that kind of courage.

As someone else mentioned in the tread, I may not join the military, but I can assure You the second "You" invade my country I will join or create a guirilla-resistancegroup. So would alot of my friends, which makes me believe alot of my countrymen would too.

No, I’m not going to thank you for your service. I don’t ask anyone to fight my battles but me - and I don’t see anyone stepping onto the shores of the States to fight.

You want to ‘sign up to see the world and kill people’ don’t even try to put that back on me or spout the ‘it was your obligation for my safety’ BS. You didn’t keep me or my family ‘safe’ with what you were doing - you helped out an ally and made TPTB more money.

Believe me, if you were a War Vet from Vietnam and all preceding ‘conflicts’ I’d be singing a whole different tune.

So truly, get over yourself and wake up.

You ‘signed up’ (in your own words) to ‘see the world’ and the price you paid (if you did) was killing people.
That’s insane and it was YOUR CHOICE - not mine.

Did you ask me if I wanted you to keep me safe?
NO!
If you had I’d of asked you to stay in the States and FIGHT for your country at home where it would do the most good. FIGHT To keep jobs in the USA - not sent to someplace overseas. FIGHT to keep the CONSTITUTION INTACT? Where were you when the Government installed the ‘Constitutional Free Zones’ in the USA? ‘Over there’ somewhere’ when you should have been home fighting to keep the USA FREE - Constitutional Free Zones, what a freakin crock.

One more thing? DON’T YOU DARE INSULT the good women and men of the USA who STAY AT HOME and work like dogs, day in and day out, nothing ‘free’, no ‘seeing the world’, no hopping over to ally tents to drink and fool around, no ‘chasing frauleins’ (can chase them but can’t spell their names? Wow). Those men and women are so far from timid it makes me wonder if you really know the meaning of that word.

The mothers and fathers trying to survive under impossible circumstances in the States? The kids just getting out of school who‘ve got no job opportunities? The Veterans of wars who are left high and dry by their government? Those are the true heroes in the USA and people need to start giving them more credit. Not someone who goes on the GI bill to get outta town just to come back and rub it all in our faces of what a good boy you are and what a great job you did.

peace

I'm sorry, but I spent a year in Iraq and am still currently in Afghanistan and these are far from "invasions". This is not a pitched battle where our soldiers are on one side and local nationals are lined up on the other with AK-47s. Our soldiers roll around on foot and in convoys offering a security presence to the locals and searching out the members of the Taliban. Do you know how they find those? It generally happens when they are FIRED UPON by those individuals. Our ROE dictates that we do not fire unless fired upon. So to day that we are out here murdering innocent people is ridiculous. Sure, it has happened, but that is generally by IDF or by unfortunate circumstance. More often than not, the rule not the exception, someone will not be shot by our soldiers unless our soldiers have first been shot or shot at by that individual or group of individuals.

Unless you have been here, you can never understand it, so I really wish you would stop commenting on these "wars" as if you know something about them. You only know what you have been told and you have read...not what you have seen with your own two eyes.

OP...your service is respected on this end.

Are you serious, Iraq and Afghanistan weren’t invasions. What you described, what is happing now is an occupation (i will agree), the occupation developed from an invasion and that’s a fact of reality. So basically you’re saying is I can catch someone off guard, kick their door in, walk freely around their home intimidating them with my gun and it’s not an invasion. Wow thanks for rewriting the laws and governing of nations by being “over there”. And by the way, just because the people haven’t been "over there", doesn’t mean they don’t have a clue what’s going on, get off your high horse.
