London Riots: Is It Twitter that Caused Them?

www.huffingtonpost.co.uk

Twitter has come under a great deal of criticism for its role in mobilising riots across London, which started in Tottenham, but spread to Enfield, Walthamstow, Waltham Forest, and Brixton over the weekend.

The Daily Mail was particularly quick to blame Twitter for helping to orchestrate the rioting and for spreading triumphal images from the rioters themselves.

The hero of Arab Spring is the enemy of the West? How can this not be hypocritical? Are we really going to blame our society's ills on the technology for people to share their beliefs? What happened to looking just a little deeper? Spread blame, shield oneself from responsibility seems to be the order of the day. Yuck!

When Twitter helps TPTB plan with riots in Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere, Twitter is considered the greatest thing since sliced bread.
But as soon as Twitter is used for real riots against TPTB, well twitter becomes an evil source of chaos.

Twitter is just software...WE are the one who decide how it's used. You can't blame twitter for this, only the people involved. If not twitter they'd just use phones...

How can social networking sites be blamed?

One minute we're questioning the privacy of things like Facebook, Twitter, BBM and becoming paranoid that everything we type is recorded and the next we're using the same services to orchestrate mass riots and looting.

People are to blame.. from your average Joe all the way up to the Elite.

The social media blame game.
By this logic, rotary phones, answering machines, sticky notes are to blame for 1981 riots ?

Riots started after police kill unarmed minority

The violence first erupted on Saturday in the multi-ethnic neighbourhood of Tottenham in north London after a man was shot dead by police two days earlier. Read more: www.smh.com.au...

Shooting death - Tensions remained high in the area following the shooting on Thursday of 29-year-old Mark Duggan, amid fresh doubts about the original account of his death during a police operation against gun crime within the black community. Read more: www.smh.com.au...

The father-of-four was shot in a taxi in what was initially said to have been an exchange of gunfire. But reports said it was possible that police officers were not under attack when they opened fire. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), the watchdog probing Duggan's death, was expected to release the test results on Tuesday. After the shooting, rumours spread online that he had been killed in an assassination-style execution with shots to the head - something the IPCC was forced to deny in a statement. As you can see, Twitter started nothing! Twitter was used to help incite riots, but racist Bobby's were to blame! Just like here in Canada (or the USA obviously,) if you aren't Caucasian, you don't matter to the Government or Law Enforcement. Let's hope something good comes from this whole mess of a situation! Like, I don't know, maybe EQUALITY!!!

Twitter = news source beyond government censorship control (and not just Twitter but all of social media).

The cause of the riots was the police killing an unarmed civilian. But this time around the facts of the situation couldn't by covered up by the media or ignored, thanks to that pesky Web.

Ignore anything from the daily fail.

Moronic thugs caused this, nothing else. You might as well say mobile phones caused it

Infact the main cause of the riots is to do with the sudden close of all the inner-city youths clubs overnight with no warning 11 days ago ,coupled with the fact its school summer holidays in London right now.

Farewell youth clubs, hello street life – and gang warfare

This was predicted 11 days ago

youth clubs were shut after the youth services budget was slashed by 75% after a cut of £41m to the council's overall budget. Hundreds of thousands of young people throughout the UK are affected.

This situation is a conspiracy nuts wet dream.

Notice how their govt does nothing, even handties their own riot squads to show up and do nothing and always in insignificant numbers. They blame it on the media, which they control anyways.

There is a tremendous amount of fear all across their nation because of these riots. A tremendous amount more than normal because they seemingly allowed it to escalate and drag on for days.

Soon the majority of people will be begging for the authorities to have wireless kill switches, get rid of anonymity on the internet, tougher crackdowns on protests, more invasive surveilance, it's all in the bag now.

The media they control are telling the people where to vent their fear and anger, twitter, texting, blackberry, cellphones. Those were the enablers, their message is very clear.

This will be relatively easy to achieve in England because of its small size.

I hope not but this thing is going global, the revolutions...
It is my honest belief now that The United states will have a turn also

If it can happen in London that is no different than the USA .
I know we have had a few riots in our time but Im thinking it could be nation wide...please prepare your families, just so they are not caught off guard if this does go down.

You forgot the fax machine. I'm sure it was that pesky invention that caused it all.

QFT! Not unlike the drugs or guns argument, both of which are over the top illegal, unless said gun is wielded in the name of a government and said government tells you to take their drugs but not that simple and harmless plant over there, don't even look at that evil plant no no no.

It truly doesn't take a genius to see that a few hundred untrained monkeys could do as well as the politicians in the U.K., who are obviously not handling anything well. If this really gets out of hand, er, much more out of hand I should say, who knows what the targets will be? It may not be political now but it could become that, a mob with a purpose.

Interesting time we live in, to say the least.

You ask this question almost as if Twitter is some living, breathing and more importantly 'scheming' being. It is not.

It was just one of many tools used by a bunch of thugs and hooligans to help them somewhat pre-plan the destruction they have caused.
Next people will suggest it was SMS messages that set fire to London! Pffft

Blame the scum, not Twitter.

Yup. Well said.

They have to demonize the internet, otherwise folks might start gathering and spreading their own information and that information might not be in Big Brother's best interest. They've put an extraordinary amount of time and money into controlling public opinion through mass media, the internet is the only real impasse left between them and complete control of that information.
